Never thought about using two contrasting Abelias together . Sounds like a good idea

I discovered abelias thanks to your videos so when I came across Radience at Home depot I was so excited. It looks much more stunning in person. It is GORGEOUS and by far my favorite. When all my plants in my west facing flower bed looked beaten down by 3 digit temperatures (9b), Radience Abelia looked UNTOUCHED. It made me laugh, because it had far less time planted and it just adapted so well. TOUGH little plant! I fell in love and now have three and want to collect more!

I think you couldn't go wrong with any. BUT I bought Kaleidoscope. I have to be honest I didn't think I would care much for it and only got it to be evergreen for front yard when all else dies. But OH MY WORD, it really has been one of my favorites! The beautiful green variegated leaves with all the white flowers on top creates a soft and whimsical feel that the bumble bee's love! The orange/red leaves start late fall bringing another flush of color to a bare landscape. Mine get's part sun in afternoon and clay soil, it's doing great! I will now be on the hunt for the other varieties to tuck them in to more spots in my landscape. I recommend these dwarf shrubs! They really don't disappoint. Simple yet stunning all in one! great comparison video!

A couple of years ago was my first time to see Abelia 'Radiance' and it was far more beautiful than any pictures I had seen of it. The luminosity of the foliage still feels so cheerful. Mine are growing strongly and seem to require very little help from me. BUT... the Abelia 'Rose Creek' enchants me just as much, and is staying very full and growing well in the edge of my shady woodland gardens, giving the strong green look that keeps the shade gardens from looking skimpy, and offering some contrast to ferns and hostas.

I had an abelia at my old house planted in a terrible spot. I cut it down to the ground several times but it kept coming back. Just bought for the new place one called Sunshine Daydream. It looks similar to Kaleidoscope but grows a little taller. Really nice plants with no negatives.

I have kaleidoscope abeila in full sun most of the day and they are bright gold right now at the end of April in zone 7b. They typically stay like this throughout most of summer and get some red in the fall. They look great against dark mulch and with deep greens like you find in baby gem boxwood.

I bought the Kaleidoscope last spring and planted it. It's my joy!! I love it. So pretty. I would like to collect the other varieties once we clear out brush to make room.

Radiance for the win! At least in the narrow bed against my red brick house. I like the more white and green look than the yellow.

I inherited 2 Kaleideoscope when we moved last year and I love 'em ... and so do the pollinators !! I keep mine pruned down pretty small - easy peasy and lovely too. I would like to try a couple (or more) of the Ms. Lemon somewhere in the garden ... will have to find just the right spot for 'em !!

I purchased a deciduous Abelia a couple years back and it took me a while to figure out what exactly it was. She's a larger variety, not sure of the type, but glad I know now because she's one of my favorite. She blooms late spring / early summer and is completely COVERED in flowers, it slowly tapers off until she loses her leaves early winter... I love that these are all evergreen varieties (hopefully so in 6b)! I'll be heading to the garden center for sure : ) Thanks for the awesome video, keep it up!

My favorite is 'Radiance.' I just bought one to plant near 'Baby Gem' boxwoods and I love the contrast in color and form. Now I think I may need two to four more to make a drift (isn't that typical...🤣).

We have many Abelia Kaleidoscope in front of our house. Some in mostly shade, some in partial shade and some in full sun. All are doing well. Some seem to grow more upright while others grow more sideways and spread out. Planning on putting a bunch together in a back shaded area. Since the grass doesn't grow back in that area, we thought about Abelia Kaleidoscopes. Does any of the three varieties grow better in mostly shaded areas under a few big trees? I would love to see some of the red colors in late fall and winter.

We are all in on abelias. We have many of the big old fashioned abelias which we love. The new varieties fit so nicely into the garden and I have to say Miss Lemon is my fav, but Kaleidoscope is close second. I picked up the last Radiance Lowe’s had today, and I have Rose Creek splattered about. They are so hardy and easy. Love the fact they’re evergreen and that they are pollinators 🦋🐝

All are evergreen. But Jim has said if you live in the coldest zone it will tolerate, 6 I think, it may lose some leaves in winter but in spring it bounces right back. 0:15

Hi, Jim, I am thinking about Kaleidoscope Abelia at the sloped edges of my swale in front of our house. The high side of this swale would tend to be dry while those near the bottom might get wet feet until the water drains off through our piping system. Would both locations work? We have many of these around the house and based on our sun or part shade locations, they change colors differently. Love them all. Even considering dwarf purple daydream Loropetalumas in this area as well. What do you think, Bill

I planted 3 radiance abelia along a small area of my foundation this past spring. You're correct, they are very pretty and attract many pollinators. I did not get much growth out of them but didn't expect much this first year. Can I fertilize with Holly Tone?

That first year is always like that, but as long as they aren't going backwards it's all good. Thanks for watching.

Any chance you can do a video about Mardi Gras Abelia? I've never seen one in person, but some of the pictures online show a beautifully graceful form. I take it though from the lack of information and pictures online that, in reality, maybe it isn't as delightful as the picture I've seen? Any thoughts/resources would be amazing!!!

Zone 7b, NE Alabama. Jim, do these amelia have the wonderful scent of the old time tall abelias? Thanks for all the wonderful videos. I moved into an 70 year old house in the country with NO shrubbery. I am a little intimidated, lol.
@JimPutnam6 жыл бұрын
They are fragrant, but I they don't stop traffic like the large cultivars. The pollinators don't seem to care.
@CarrieNita6 жыл бұрын
We have a 3 acre wildflower field. Right now we are seeing all kinds of pollinators. The reason I ask is because it is wonderful to raise the windows in summer with the wonderful scent and the drone of the bumbles. The ones you are showing will be so much more user friendly.

Jim, I really like the Radiance Abelia but I can’t find any for sale. If it is at all possible for you to point me in the right direction, I would really love to purchase one. Just planted the Kaleidoscope Abelia today.

I fell in love with abelias when I purchased canyon creek. I next purchased radiance and put it in a pot last year. I am smitten with it. I think this spring, I will move it to a permanent spot in my mixed bed. I came across this site looking for propagation info for abelias. Any suggestions?

I have a propagation series the last to years on my channel and they include abelias.

I had the Miss Lemon Angelia planted in my front flower bed about 6 weeks ago. The plants look healthy but not as compact as I think they should be. I am in Zone 8b. When is the best time to trim to encourage fuller growth? Thanks.
@laurawiller90416 жыл бұрын
They are all great but I think Radiance is the most versatile because the colors won't clash with other plants. I've had problems with other variegated abelias reverting to all green. Have you seen that with these varieties?
@kmextreme14 жыл бұрын
I love my Kaleidescope. Starting to get wider than I need. I started to prune now (mid-May) but am seeing a lot of new growth underneath. Should I wait?
@jeffreydmclendon6 жыл бұрын
I didn’t know about Radiance so thanks for showing that one. It and Miss Lemon are outstanding. Have a 3 Rose Creeks that have formed a triangle mass that are a show stopper. But, they lose almost all leaves in the winter. I thought they were more semi-evergreen in my area (Atlanta). Any idea why that happens more than when I see them planted in other yards?
@JimPutnam6 жыл бұрын
Some of it depends on exposure. Are you 7a or b?
@jeffreydmclendon6 жыл бұрын
HortTube with Jim Putnam on the lower edge of 7b and beginning of 8a near downtown Atlanta. They are in full sun with no break. In a somewhat sloped bed so it may be that the ground gets colder??
