The smallest dash is a hyphen that is used for compound words and hyphenation in paragraphs. The second dash is called an en-dash and basically replaces the word "to" or "from" when using dates or times such as 7:30-8:00, Dec-Jan, 1960-1990. The longest dash is called the em-dash and is a pause in the reading of text to create emphasis or drama in a similar way that one might use an ellipsis (…), a set of commas, or parentheses. It is also used to create an aside in text, such as "He was living-as it turns out-a serious life of crime."

These en’s and em’s are from the Printing / Compositing world, an en is half the size of an em. Being a retired Compisitor I really miss the old Print days at work 😊
@Rocadamis2 ай бұрын
@@michaelspinetto7569 Relative to the particular font being used, an en-dash is the width of the letter "n" and an em-dash is the width of the letter "m". The en-dash s not half the size of the em dash, but more like 2/3rds the size of it.

If you can't remember all those letters triggered with alt: put the input menu in the menu bar (activate it in System settings > Keyboard > Input sources). Then select the Keyboard Viewer in that menu. Now if you hold alt or alt+shift with the Viewer open it wll show you all the special characters. Accent keys are highlighted and when you type one of those all characters that you may use that accent on will be highlighted as well. So no problem if you forgot how to type e.g. the Spanish ñ.
@holeo1962 ай бұрын
Normally opt- would type out special characters like ç. I don't really need those, so I created a custom Mac input option that clears out all default opt- shortcuts so I can remap them in Raycast. For example, opt-N opens up my notes. It's really convenient to not think about which combination of finger gymnastics is still unoccupied and instead just use opt for all my shortcuts.

One of the most interesting videos I’ve seen pertaining to Apple. I’ve used my Mac the same way I’ve always used it and never looked at more efficient ways to do things, just the Option / Expand is worth knowing. Makes a refreshing change from the barrage of 10, 20, 50 things you should do with your X device that show up in my feed daily!

Option and red dot for closing makes all windows closing un the finder or any app with multiple window opened . Option restart or shut down allows immediate shut down or restart (it turns off the closing message) It's better to show the keyboard to enjoy all hidden characters with option key.

When Apple came out with the Mac with a one button mouse people thought it was crazy. Windows used a two button mouse and Unix computer with GUI interface used a three button mouse. People struggled with Apple one button mouse until they realize it was a two button mouse in disguise. The Option button was the second mouse button. People still were frustrated and later Apple made mouse with scroll wheel that could be pressed like a button and mouse you tilt slightly to the right and a menu popped up. Apple mouse looked like a one button mouse but it was two thanks to the Option key. Now large application use the option key as a modified. The command key is the main key for shortcut, but the option key brings up variation of the command key. Then add the shift key with the option key and now it applies the option command key to selected items. The control key has special uses and with the shift key gives another layer of possible shortcuts. command key for shortcuts. with option key for options of the command key, add shift key to option with command and apply to selected items.

Word on the street has it that the reason behind many of Boeing's problems is their engineers are spending most of their time memorizing thousands o Apple "tricks" rather than paying attention to important things like door retaining bolts! Seriously when a tool gets so complicated that "learning" how to use the tool takes up most of your time then you have become, as Thoreau once quipped, "The tool of your tools!"

When the M1 came out, I got my first ever Macbook. As a lifetime Windows user, I hated the four keys in the bottom left instead of the 3 on windows. Years later, I still hate it. I've spent so much time figuring out how to remap my keyboard to act like windows. Surely I cannot be the only person that hates the layout/hotkey difference.

I guess I got used to the shortcuts in macOS much more easily because I never used most Ctrl shortcuts in Windows, due to the physical awkwardness. Now I maintain a project (Toshy) that allows the use of Mac-style shortcuts in Linux, because I can’t stand the Windows/Linux style shortcuts and find the Mac-style shortcuts far more intuitive and easy to get to. 😂 I don’t know of any easy way to do the reverse in macOS. That must be tough.

To make such a helpful (yet easily forgettable) video and NOT include a downloadable list of the shortcut keys is just tragic. You can't fault the man (since he still put the time and effort into creating this), but if I was to make a video like this. It'd be a no brainer for me to AT LEAST type out some of the shortcuts in the description. Bare minimum. I'll definitely be making a downloadable list of my own for other people to benefit from.
