In my opinion girl that pushed white player should have received a flagrant technical for her actions you can see after she pushed her she walks towards her and Stairs her down she should also be disqualified

Play number 2 was a just a good Screen and when the coach bumps a ref that should’ve been an automatic ejection. Bonus clip: I would’ve rule that unsportsmanlike foul on that player on. Then a tech on that offensive team for slight push. Another tech on the defensive player who did not commit that foul. And then an ejection on that defensive player who did foul for the punch.
@laynemangum349Ай бұрын
Bonus Play (36:00): The push by Blue 4 and steps toward White 5 are retaliation for White 5's elbow to her teammate. It should be penalized as such. If Blue 4 simply pushed White 5, I could been lenient with a flagrant. The steps toward White 5 show aggression and escalation.

35:12 Bonus Play: even if the action by B4 (the shove) is not penalized (but there is no reason to let it go), it is too much of a stretch to consider the elbow by W5 (whether judged to be an FTF, or an FTF-Fighting) and the punch by B20 to be considered having occurred at "approximately the same time." Therefore, those two fouls can't be ruled a double technical foul, so free throws will have to be shot by both teams in the order of occurrence. If in the bonus, W5's substitute will shoot, followed by 2 FTs by Blue, followed by 4 FTs for White, who will then get the ball for a throw-in at the division line opposite the table.

19:12 The team-control foul call was absolutely correct. The problem, as I see it, is that we now have to use the same one-size-fits-all signal for player and team control fouls. This creates confusion, as people understandably believe the official claims the shooter caused the foul. We really need to return to two separate signals for player/team control fouls.
@MaydayAggro Жыл бұрын
It would be better if we bird dog the player who committed the foul and then indicate "team control."
@bobbrown2039 Жыл бұрын
Play #5 (00:21:30) was a ruled a illegal screen and the shot was not released prior to the foul. It also appears that the official is signaling two shots at the other end. It's my understanding there are no shots on team control fouls or player control fouls, even when the other team is in bonus. I'm a new official so I very well may be incorrect. Your thoughts?
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
You are correct. No free throws EVER for team control or Player Control fouls. No free throws were awarded on this play

@betterofficial With game over (play one - you make the call) is a technical on white coach warranted?
@MaydayAggro Жыл бұрын
In bonus play 2, I believe there should be more free throws by white. The fighting technical foul penalty instructs that only two shots should be taken, but the leaving the bench area technical does not. It also instructs that technical fouls are assessed to each offender.

Two questions: 1. On play 2, as soon as the coach steps on the court during a live ball to argue a call/non-call, we have a tech. He then makes intentional physical contact with the official. Would calling both techs and ejection be appropriate or just the one tech and ejection be better? 2. Play 3 10:05 Can you comment on the actions of the red player at the bottom of screen makes toward the crowd just before and after the horn sounds? Thank you.
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
Re: 1, if a Technical Foul is not ruled for the initial actions, as in this case, then a single Tech. If we assess a Tech and the coach persists and bumps, then two Techs.
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
Re: 2, the unobserved action. We talked about it on the livestream. If it was a finger and WAS observed we can and should assess a Player Technical Foul recognizing we would not attempt the Free throws since they would not effect the outcome of the game. I can't tell from the video whether it was an unsporting gesture but it certainly could have been.

19:02 Re: play five - if crew determines the try went up prior to the illegal screen, we’ve determined the basket counts. Is the screener still charged with a foul? Thanks for your great content! Really been helpful in my first few years in the business.
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
If the try was released it is still a foul, but no loner a team control foul. The goal would be scored and then the foul penalized.
@realtruthseeker521 Жыл бұрын
On play five I have a question. If the shooter did release before contact. That would then be a dead ball foul correct. Which really the only penalty would be the team foul and one player foul toward disqualification??
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
If the shooter releases a try before the foul, the ball would still be live and the result of the try would count.

Great bonus play to learn from….. I would have a common foul on blue 20. Disqualifying flagrant techs on blue 20 & white 5. And a dead ball tech on blue 4. Substitute for white 5 will shoot free throws if white is in the bonus otherwise the DQ techs will offset and white will shoot 2 with the lane cleared and then have throw in at the division line.
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
My ruling as well. The essential question is whether we offset the two flagrant acts or whether the time between them prevents it.
@beastmode-jd1em Жыл бұрын
@@BetterOfficials I think some officials have trouble with the way it’s worded as ‘simultaneous’ and at or about the same time. In this case one action invoked the reaction. I would even classify this as all 3 fouls occurred in the time frame but the 2 DQ’s will offset and shots for offended on the third.
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
It's hard. Case Plays don't completely clarify either. And on the court in moments of 'chaos', we want to have some clarity and simplicity. I find that I want to group the actions as well.
@OpaTheOpenminded Жыл бұрын
I didn’t have White 5 throwing an elbow with intent to strike as a flagrant technical foul during this bonus play dead ball action. I’m watching on a small phone, so a bit harder to see, but it appears to me that Blue 20 has her arm tangled under White 5’s arm/armpit area and around her torso, causing them to be momentarily stuck together. As a result, White 5 yanks her body & arm/elbow away from Blue 20 (not towards), breaking free from this entanglement. I could potentially see myself ruling White 5’s action either excessive in nature, making it a flagrant technical foul due to that excessive action; or a no-call, as she is exhibiting frustration, yet separates herself from the opponent and immediately turns to walk away. It’s a tough call and I wouldn’t disagree with anyone ruling White 5’s actions a flagrant technical foul. As for Blue team, I agree with the B20 common foul, B4 Intentional Technical Foul, and B20’s Flagrant Technical Foul (fighting). Finally, I’d like to know if these constitute as False Multiple Fouls. The common foul occurs during live ball, the additional technicals during dead ball together seem close enough to be considered Multiple Fouls in and of themselves. Can you have both a False multiple & a Multiple foul like this? I’d think so for the sake of determining if any free-throws will be counted or negated. This is a very valuable case play to study and I’m glad your tech team decided to go with it.
@laynemangum349Ай бұрын
When a foul like an elbow or taunt draws retaliation, it's common sense to treat the first offense the same as the retaliation. Otherwise, the first offense gets a lesser penalty when the first offense was the cause of the 2nd.

Question: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4XSq4Geh6ypl6M --- The trail official had one job ... to make sure there was no travel on the shot from the backcourt. The shooter obviously travelled but the ref no called the obvious. Was he not watching? Was he afraid of late calling the travel? This cost Cinncinati the game!
@princebarlow5316 Жыл бұрын
On Play Number ONE I thought the player TRAVELED. The Ball tipped was tipped by the jumpers, then touched by another player. Team White Jumper fell to the floor after tip , the player was getting off of the floor and was no longer on the ground, she saw the ball coming towards her caught it and then her back side and knee hit the ground before she passed it to her teammate. I did not see a travel signal but that is what I had. I did not see a jump ball violation.
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
That is the twist on this play for sure.
@tomlehman6701 Жыл бұрын
Play #1 - the only thing I can think is that he called is a traveling violation. The jumper caught the ball prior to her butt hitting the floor, so maybe it IS a good call. Bottom line (no pun intended) is that a proper signal would have helped everyone know wth was going on.
@laynemangum349Ай бұрын
I have the same call. The calling official has his back to the camera and his hands both move in front of him, but we can't see if he made a signal or not. Based on how all the players began moving in the correct direction immediately after his hands moved, I'd bet he made a signal.
@NicholasThompson-gn6bk Жыл бұрын
Second play, it looked as if the screener gave one stride for the girl to move around. IMO, it's unfortunate she didn't see it coming. However, the coach should have been whacked after his first comment. After the bump, the coach should have been sent to the locker room regardless of how many technicals he received earlier.

@laynemangum349Ай бұрын
I believe a lot officials wouldn't grant the TO in this situation, then justify their disregard of the rule saying it wouldn't have made a difference. We shouldn't be making that judgment. The rules book is clear. When a coach requests a TO during a dead ball, the officials SHALL grant it, even when they've exhausted all their TOs. They pay for it with a T.

I assume you are referring to the play where the game clock expired during the throw-in? I think in this situation, a one possession game, you’ll want to perform the 5 second inbound mechanics. If you do not, it will appear to the coach, players, and fans that you unjustly allowed the time to be wasted as it expired. The optics of performing the count signal shows everyone “I’m not allowing them to illegally waste time” and helps the game to appear to be better managed.

The bigger question on this second play is the elephant in the room. Why are officials refusing to call travels when it is obvious? Why are the evaluators not correcting this? It is just tragic in my opinion. The game is going in the toilet and we officials are to blame for it. I just don't understand the mentality behind these obvious travels not being called. Are officials being told to ignore it like they do with the 3 second count, or are they afraid it will hurt their ratings if they call these ticky-tacky travels, or worse, ruin the flow of the game with these game interrupters? It gradually gets worse every year and one of the reasons why I stopped watching the college game, never mind the pro game. I had Dr. Steitz in my official training class and he is probably rolling over in his grave at this lack of respect on the rules of the game by officials today. So sad.
@BetterOfficials Жыл бұрын
Russell, if you are referring to the actions of the player who end up passing to a teammate for the layup, in my judgement this is not an obvious travel and is a legal play! But we agree that spin move travels often go uncalled.
