Hi Aaron, I’m a Toastmaster from The Philippines (District 75). I just wanted to say that your 2016 world championship speech is probably my favorite TM speech of all time. I showed your speech to a non-TM friend the other day and she felt really touched because she could totally relate to the message of your speech. I think that speaks volumes of how good this piece was. I also really appreciated the analysis you provided in this video. I will competing at our District evaluation competition and your breakdown of the speech has given me a lot of possible inputs I could give to speakers I will be evaluating. It has also inspired me to further improve my prepared speeches. Very informative!

Thank you Jan-Ace. Out of both of my world championship speeches, I do believe this one is my favorite. In 2019, I told "a" story but in 2016, I told "My" story. It was much more personal and I believe that is why it remains so relatable to many people today. I am glad to hear that I've given you some inspiration for your future evaluation contests. It is a good idea to look at evaluation and breakdowns. That is actually something that I didn't think about when I competed in my evaluation contest.

Hello Aaron! This video is amazing. I have seen all four of your 2016 and 2019 contest speeches and without a doubt this video is your most impressive performance I have seen. Your analytical autopsy, self awareness and comprehensive breakdown fascinated me this morning. I love how you engineer every detail. The thought you put into everything down to eye ball movement is inspiring. In this breakdown you deliver value by showing me that every second of your contest speech is on purpose. I have faulted my own contest performances for feeling too well planned and executed and I see yours being even more extreme in this regard. It does not feel like there is any randomness, improvisation or authenticity to the moment. I'm going to have to see you perform in table topics one day. I'm super curious to see you speak off the cuff. I hope I see you soon. Keep up the great work and congratulations on your win! Jay Green, District 18

Dear Aaron, I love your speeches especially the 57 word long title speech and your attire and humor in the 2019 world championship speech. I am a young speaker of age 13, it is going to be my second contest in the coming month and I want to ask you how humor and misdirection can be added to include flavor in the speech and make it more entertaining to the audience?
@publicspeakingmentor5 жыл бұрын
SHINING STARS first I think it’s awesome that your 13 and passionate about public speaking. I can’t add much more about misdirection than what I said in the video, but it can be done many ways for example puns are a form of misdirection. You say a word that means one thing but you use it out of context which creates the humor. The key however should that your humor needs to fit with what you’re talking about. You can’t just tell a few jokes then give your speech.

I thoroughly enjoyed this analysis. I didn't even notice the grammar part until you pointed it out. Wow. But I have a question, though. At the start of the story, you told it in the past tense. But at some point later, you switched to the present tense in telling the story. Is that Okay to use? If so, was that intentional also, from you?
@publicspeakingmentor2 жыл бұрын
Good question! When I did it, it was unintentional. I didn't pay attention to tense switching when I was competing back then. Once I was made aware of it, I made sure that my speeches were either in present tense or past tense and stuck with only one throughout. While many people don't usually notice the switching, a keen judge could possibly mark you negatively for grammar (at least in my opinion)

@publicspeakingmentor5 жыл бұрын
Brad McNamara the best way that I deal with nervousness is mastering the beginning of my speech. Right before I go on stage I think to myself “nail the opening.” Something else I do is listen to music before I go on. Not just any music, but music that inspires me and motivates me to go out and do what I need to do. When I competed for the world championship that is exactly what I did.

@@publicspeakingmentor Thank you for this advice, I really appreciate that you took the time to answer. This seems like it could definitely work for me in the future. Chetan Lakhera I don’t have much experience competing in the humorous contest. But one thing I have observed is that a message isn’t always needed. Sometimes all you need is a quality ending to a story and closure of any open points you had in your stories. Try to review district winning humorous speeches and see what you can find.

Any tips to contest toastmasters? Please aaron
@publicspeakingmentor4 жыл бұрын
Hi Aadarsh, sorry for the delayed reply. I will give you 3 tips right here and now. 1) Focus on growing not winning. Use the contest as an opportunity to display the skills that you have learned in Toastmasters like vocal variety and getting to the point, etc... don't worry about the trophy, if you improve your skills, the trophies will follow. 2) Just compete and don't wait: Some people wait for the perfect topic or don't compete because someone more experienced is competing as well, so they don't think they can win. Again don't worry about winning and just compete. Competing raises your experience 3) Find a mentor ASAP who has been where you want to go and who is close to your location. I was not trained or coached by any previous world champions; however I had a person near me who was experienced in the contest. He trained me and taught me. I used his lessons to learn how to succeed in the contest.
