The lyricist of this song Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847) was a pastor of a poor church in a fishing village in Devonshire, England. The conditions there at that time were not very supportive of his ministry mission, but he did not lose heart and remained steadfast in continuing his duties. When he wrote the lyrics to this song, he knew he had not long to live. His tuberculosis and asthma had left him feeling lonely. Henry Lyte was inspired by a Bible reading in Luke 24 verse 29 which reads: But they urged Him very much, saying: "Stay with us, for it is nearly evening and the sun is almost setting." Then he went in to live with them; that they met Jesus on the day of His resurrection and they invited Jesus to stay because it was evening.
Then this elderly pastor knew that his life too had "twilight" but he was determined to make the best use of his life even in his pain and loneliness. Shortly after he wrote this hymn, he preached one last time. At that time Henry Lyte was in such a weak condition that he had to struggle to reach the pulpit.
The lyrics of this song are so beautiful: "In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me" (in life and death, O God, stay with me), and blends with the melody created by William Henry Monk (1861) known as "Eventide" made the song Stay with me even more popular during World War I. Even a nurse with Edit Cavell sang this song the night before she was executed for helping British soldiers escape Belgian territory that had been occupied by German troops.
Not to forget also the British Royal family really liked it. The song "Abide With Me" is one of those sung at Queen Elizabeth II's wedding mass with Prince Philip.
