MIDI map - - Hit midi button on top right corner - Mouse-click a button you want to control with a MIDI Controller (in her example, they’re little triangles that appear in the middle of each column while midi mapping is active. You can see them when she says “map this button here” - Tap the button or turn the knob on your midi controller. Small text should appear on the computer screen next to the button you’re mapping (Repeat the previous two steps for each Ableton button you want to map. Click Ableton button, tap midi controller or turn knob, look for text to appear) - click MIDI (top right corner) to exit MIDI mapping mode.

I've been looking for a sensible looping workflow since Ableton 8. I use Ableton Live as a conventional DAW, around 80% of what I record are live instruments. Guitar, bass, drums, vocal. This is the best workflow I have seen so far! Thanks so much for posting this video, it has changed my templates for the better! My only request from Ableton has been for preset loop length. I record with a standard drum kit, and it's very difficult for me to click a MIDI mapped pedal separate from the kit, it's distracting. I wish there was a way to pre-select the loop length, but I haven't found a good way.
@Justine-Griffin
@Justine-Griffin Жыл бұрын
Awesome! Glad it helped 😁 I totally agree about preset loop length. The only way I know of is with the Push 2 controller “fixed length”, but my issue with that is, I don’t always do the same length loops for different instruments in the same song. Some are 2 bars, some are 4, etc

Hey Justine Thanks a lot for this easy tutorial. There is just one thing I totally don't get. 4:32 you click on Midi and then "Midi-map?" the loop channels? But I do not have that button you're talking about. There is just a triangle sign on all of these channels. Is it because you already have some data (106/107/108 and so on) on the master channel? How do I get these 96, 97, 98 stuff on that channels, that they record one after another?

Ok this is the smartest way I’ve seen this done - So at 4:20 ish 1. The ‘Guitar’ channel is set to IN but isn’t armed - it’s essentially just a monitoring track 2. the Guitar Loop channels are then armed one at a time, set to Ext In and input is OFF, ‘Guitar’ this means that monitoring signal isn’t doubled. 3. Global quantize (at top of screen) is set to 1 BAR which means loops will cut cleanly at the bar line One question, do the audio clips loop back round automatically? Or is there a PREF or global setting that needs to be selected to make that happen? Thanks!

Thanks, Justine! I seem to have made some bad decisions on my looping setup. First is the Boss RC-600 loop station, which is unreliable and seems to get worse with each firmware update. Then I made the mistake of using (brain dead) Mainstage, which is built to sell new computers with more cores and memory. I''m at a crossroads, now. Do I hang to the RC-600 or dump it while they still have some value and move to Ableton? It seems most of the best Twitch streamers, like you, use Ableton with lots of control surfaces. Big decision. Cheers, RustyBoltMusic

Sell 👏 it 👏 I think Ableton is more worth your time of practicing. You kinda have to pick one and stick with it (type of looper I mean) because each one takes a considerable amount of effort to get good at haha
@Justine-Griffin
@Justine-Griffin 8 ай бұрын
Although I think it depends on your goals as a musician. Do you want to gig with just a mic and guitar? Probably stick with the simple looper pedal option. If you want to use synths and stuff then Ableton is better but has more pieces to set up and more moving parts, which = more problems haha

@@Justine-Griffin, I'm all too familiar with looper problems. Ableton looks even less friendly than Mainstage, so I'm going to stick to my RC-600, for now (even though it has randomly crashed since I bought it - a sad tale). I love your talent. I'm headed for Twitch, too. Someday.

This is the best video explaining the process I have seen so far. I would be interested to know how you tackle songs with multiple parts looped (verse/chorus for example). Oh yes. Ok this is the main flaw I’ve noticed with session looping. You have to wait like one loop before you can start recording the next track… usually it’s not that big of a deal because it gives you time to figure out what you’re going to record next, but when you already know what you’re going to loop, it’s kind of a pain and slows down the loop buildup. You could experiment with the Looper in Ableton for specific loops that you want to overdub quickly, but I found it hard to keep track of Looper and session clips together. It’s like you need to choose one or the other form of looping… if you figure it out, make a tutorial for me please! Haha

Hi! I noticed that in the final demo at the end of the video you have your audio for the three loop tracks coming in from external input 2, rather than the “guitar” track like you’d instructed earlier in the video. Was this intentional? If so, why? Also, what are you using to trigger the loops, a foot controller?
@Justine-Griffin
@Justine-Griffin Жыл бұрын
I see what you're talking about. Good catch! I didn't realize in the video but it does say Ext. In 2, so that means the audio was coming directly from the input on my audio interface rather than the guitar track as I instructed earlier. Either way would work, and I'm not sure why it switched to Ext. In 2 to be honest but the difference is that if it's coming from the "guitar" track, it will retain the audio effects on the that track (EQ, Comp, etc) without having to add those FX to each individual "looping" track. Using the "guitar" track as the "Audio From" should save CPU usage because you only add the FX to one track, rather than repeating on a bunch of loop tracks. Hope that helps!

I do use the Nektar Pacer for switching tracks (I mapped it to each track). But you can do that with any midi controller, or even your keyboard if you want. The track arming is actually something I set up in the preferences. See this tutorial for that: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qYuboZhtfph2Y68 You just midi map the track launch button to whatever you want (in my case, I mapped it to the Nektar Pacer) to start/stop recording each individual track. I show it at about 4:30 in the video. If you have auto arm set up, when you switch tracks and hit the track launch button, it will start recording in the clip of whatever scene you're on. Hope that helps!

Dear Ableton, please add Audio-Overdub for Clips, Thank you. (why on earth isn't it a feature yet? gods ways are truly mysterious) Thank you for the video! I have a question: Do you know a quick way (which can be achieved while live-playing, without much mouse-clicking) to adjust e.g. Guitar recordings to fit perfectly on the count 1? I mean, you might never have this issue if you have zero latency and play perfectly. But in my recordings i often times see that the first transient of the recorded audio signal doesnt perfectly match the beginning of the bar. Is there some sort of audio-quantisation possible to automatically drag the first transient to the absolute zero-starting-point of the loop ?

I second this with clip overdubbing! Ugh. To answer your question, that does happen to me sometimes! You can do it on the Push 2, but I usually just quickly use my mouse to manually correct it. It's inefficient and looks kinda bad so I usually just hit "undo" with the push or Ctrl Z and re-record it. I don't know of an automatic way to do it unfortunately.

Yeah I have a pedal. The only way I’m aware of to do “fixed length” loops is with the Push controller, and it only works for Midi loops, not audio.

Yes! Just set the cue out in Ableton to a different output than your master out. For example, my cue out is 3/4 and my master out is 7/8. Then I just make sure the click (3/4 in my case) is muted in the master output in Focusrite Control (my interface software) but still coming through the headphone monitor and set my Audio Input in OBS Studio to 7/8. Hope that helps!

Hey. How do you overcome latency when recording with your audio track in and plugins on it ?
@Justine-Griffin
@Justine-Griffin 3 ай бұрын
Put your effects like reverb, delay (or other effects/plugins that you use across multiple tracks) onto return tracks. That limits the amount of places that the plugins are at. Hope that makes sense!

No, I start and stop just like a traditional looper. But I have the global quantization set to 1 bar, so I can start/stop anytime within that bar. Helps when you're switching instruments or stopping multiple loops at the same time.

Hey, how do you set the tempo? I always have problems with the first loop. If I don't have a klick in my ears it's not satisfying. If I choose the looper of Ableton I can set the tempo by the first loop. But it's complicated to work afterwards. How do you solve this?

The tempo is in the upper left of the screen. You can set it manually or tap tempo. Then just make sure the metronome is turned on (it turns orange) and hit play for it to start the click

@@Justine-Griffin Hello, thank you for replying. What I did, ( I have ableton live 11) is that I recored the clips individually. I dont know if settings changed with ableton but basically I don't think I can do it as you do in the video. I notice that in the video you record the guitars right after another. Whereas I have to change the record button of each individual track, click on the record button of the clip set and then record it and I need to press space bar to stop recording and I have to time it of course. Do you have a video where you teach how to map keys on my keyboard? Anyway, I still learned from you how to create the loops which was awesome and I made a really cool one with I riff I had for months now and I did not know how to fit it. I will make a video and post it soon I think. Too bad though, that I can only have 8 tracks on ableton live 11 lite. I need to upgrade soon because now I have all these ideas and I need more tracks.

Go into Preferences and adjust the buffer size. If your computer can handle it, lower the buffer size for lower latency. If you start hearing crackling/popping, raise the buffer size! I shoot for about 15ms of latency
