Totally. Exclusive being OFF used to mess me up because I’d record over things on accident. But I have a new rig for gigging, and I definitely have it turned off now on purpose. Because I have to sometimes arm an instrument to play it and I don’t want to UNarm everything! If you are using Session View, also check out “record on clip launch” if you want to have tracks armed but not always record into them every single time. Hope that helps! 😊

Hey. Really helpful. One more thing. Was your monitor headphones plugged into your interface or your computer/laptop. Beginner here 😅
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots4 жыл бұрын
Monitor headphones are plugged into the Interface. Some studio monitors (speakers) have a headphone jack, too. Plugging headphones directly into the audio interface has another advantage. Many audio interfaces have a dial that allows you to switch between hearing the sound from your DAW (like Ableton) OR hearing the sound directly from the microphones / instruments BEFORE they get to the computer. This can be very helpful, for example, for recording raw vocals with no lag.

Hahahaha it’s like that sometimes. If you’ve got everything working, and you’re brand new, I’d seriously recommend staying away from videos about plugins, gear, etc. as they will all lead you to believe you “need” those things to make music. I know that might sound weird coming from a guy with a room full of gear - but this is the gear I USE - not the piles of gear in storage that I DON’T use. :) Instead, experiment and go into it without a specific outcome in mind - in other words just have fun and see what happens.

@JonValtandtheEvilRobots2 жыл бұрын
One thing I’d recommend looking at on the Launchkey is the velocity sensitivity. There are a few settings, depending on whether you’re a gentle, hard, consistent, random type of key player you are. :) Also remember that MIDI has channels. It’s possible to use future launchkeys, or other inexpensive controllers to control multiple computer instruments, each being set to different channels. Launchkey is a great starter keyboard. Starter because it’s cheap, it has controls on it, and you’ll get 20 keyboards and still find a use for it.

I appreciate you Jon, I just got an Arturia MiniLab MKII midi keyboard - it's amazing - I followed your steps and finally was able to record new tracks, dragging and dropping from the VST menu onto midi tracks THANKS!. I'm using Arturia's Analogue Lab 4 playing neat sounds to find what I like. Here's the thing, for some reason Ableton Live Lite will weirdly only play one track & silence the other tracks. I have to quit Ableton (after googling forever) restart and it plays fine. The track doesn't have "S" clicked to single it out either. Admittedly this is the 1st time I've ever used this DAW so I may be missing something. 2. When I create a new Midi track on Ableton, and on a separate window, on Analogue Lab 4 load a new instrument, pad or synth, Ableton plays the last tracks sound @ the same time. I have to quit Ableton, can't find any mute button or anything to be able to play new sounds on the MiniLab on Analogue Lab 4 without Ableton doubling the new sound (before even selecting it from the menu your vid describes so well) with the last track's sound. Sorry for the TLDR! Any thoughts?
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots4 жыл бұрын
Xander Cage it’s not tldr. Haha. Some questions I get on here have no information (“it doesn’t work!”) ;) For number one, I’m not exactly sure what you mean. The tracks that are only playing one at a time, what kind of tracks are they? Midi? Audio? For #2, I’m guessing what you mean is that you recorded a MIDI track, and now when you change sounds on your keyboard and want to record a midi track with that sound, that the previously recorded midi is playing (but with your new sound) as you’re trying to record the new stuff. If thats the situation, it’s because the previous midi track is still activated and is sending midi information to your keyboard. You can disable the midi out to your keyboard by choosing “no output” for that track. See this other video of mine that doesn’t specifically address your problem, but provides fundamentals of playing a previously recorded midi track while recording something new.... I think you’ll find the concept you’re missing. :) Ableton Live Quick Tip - Recording MIDI and Audio At the Same time. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jpCZmZZ-i8x9gZo

@@JonValtandtheEvilRobots Thanks man, what I mean is I"ll create a blank new midi track (not duplicating the settings from the last recorded track) and get ready to record, but before I even select the new plug in from the VST menu, if I play my Midi keyboard it plays both the new sound in Analogue Lab and the last sound from the last track. I record multiple tracks in the project because I make electronica music, so I am layering pads, synths, orchestral sounds, beats on top of each other. So for instance, last night staying up til 3am just to find out how to record with my new keyboard, frustrated, til I found your video, I recorded 4 different tracks each with a different synth or pad. Then when pressing play, it would work for a while, then only play one track, despite the other Midi tracks clearly showing there was sound previously recorded. I'll try the no out put option tonight when I record a new sesh. All my tracks are midi no audio, I'm just trying to layer sounds together to create an awesome electronica song.
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots4 жыл бұрын
@@xandercage4279 Do you have a VST on each track? Make sure your midi routing isn't sending midi back out to your keyboard. If you create a new track, and another MIDI track is still armed (red dot) then you'll hear sounds from that when you press the keyboard. Are you sure this isn't a problem with Analogue Lab? I know I've had problems with some drum vsts for example, if I have multiple instances. And also be sure to check whether Analogue Lab somehow has its OWN midi settings where it might be receiving midi data even though your track isn't armed! :-)

Still no reaction from Ableton. Himmmmm, as you said at the beginning of the video, it seems that I have a whole different problem. But still, thank you very much! At least now I know the solution to another problem I may have in the future. Best wishes!

Lua Veli Let’s try all the steps... Do you have your input dials on your zoom H4 turned up? Inputs on the H4 activated? Is your H4 showing that it’s receiving audio? (Meters on its lcd screen) On the computer (Ableton) H4 set as your audio interface? In Ableton track, correct inputs selected? On Ableton track, the In / Auto / Off set to “Auto?”

@@JonValtandtheEvilRobots Hello Jon! How kind of you. Thank you so much. Well, I really have checked everything multiple times.Turns out that the problem was the Hardware configuration. Now it works! Unfortunately now I can't hear what I recorded. Despite turning on "auto" on the audio track. Himmmm, at least one problem is solved today. Once again, thank you so much!

Lua Veli sweet! Does Ableton make ANY sounds? Let’s go down the output route now. :) - does it make sounds while you’re recording? - do waveforms show up on the tracks? - if you turn on the metronome and hit play, can you hear it? - did you select the right hardware for OUTput as well?
@bolivar17894 жыл бұрын
@@JonValtandtheEvilRobots Thanks a lot for your reply! Yes yes I see the waves. But I can hear what I recorded, only after I change the whole preferences: when I changed the driver type from MMX Direct X to ASIO. When I am recording, when the driver type is on ASIO I hear nothing. I don't hear the metronome either. I don't know if there are extra hardware options for output... YK-usb2.0 it says OUT 2x44 1-48kHz This is all I know. HImmm, very sorry to bother you! Have a nice evening!

Lua Veli I don’t use Windows (ASIO) but from what I remember, there are a separate set of settings for ASIO. For example, you need to select ASIO as your device, and then there is something akin to “ASIO settings” that will allow you to select your interface etc. You’re on the right track! Let’s get you making music! :)

Hey thank you for pausing to say a kind word. What kind of music are you working on?

This was really helpful! Could you also please tell us howto assign sounds or tracks to the pads on a midi?
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots3 жыл бұрын
You bet! You need to put a Drum Rack onto your MIDI track and be sure it gets input from your pad device. From there, there will be a series of squares. Press a pad on your controller, and you'll see the appropriate one light up in Ableton. Simply drag a sound file over to the square, and Ableton will do the rest.

Can you help maybe. I don’t see the metering lights on any channel. The computer sees the interface and I can adjust it in the software. But Ableton doesn’t see it. What can I check to make sure the setup is right? Thank you for your help!

Can you go into your Preferences / Settings, to Audio, and make sure you have your audio interface selected as the Input and Output devices?

That was great. Life saver.

Hey Jon, I'm using my computer keyboard as a midi keyboard. I armed it and also selected computer keys as my midi keypad and draged a pre-installed drum samples. However, there is no sound coming from my headphones plugged in my audio interface (Scarlett 2i2). I can see the signal in midi channel though. What do you think the problem maybe?
@JonValtandtheEvilRobots4 жыл бұрын
Off the top of my head, make sure: Your audio configuration is set to send audio out to your Scarlett You are playing computer keyboard notes in the same octave where the drum samples are set to trigger on. Use Z and X to change octaves.

Jon Valt and the Evil Robots thanks mate , I thought there was a problem with the input and not with the octaves. Now it works perfectly after changing the octaves🙌🏻
