Great. That's what is needed. One of my most favorite tunings. Sure we all know great masterpieces like "Black hole sun", "Walking in my shoes", "Right in two" showing what Drop D is capable for, but you are right, very often people really perceive it as an instrument for power cords only. Thank you for showing how melodic it can be. It would be great to watch similar story about Open C. "Burden in my hand" sounds incredibly, I got to improvise a bit in this tuning, but felt somehow limited... rather by my skills and knowledge.

The way I think of drop d is like an open tuning coz it almost is, I mean you have a (kind of) Dmaj/min open tuning, which sounds neutral (maj/min means it has a major and minor in it, so it’s neutral bc of them canceling each other out) but still is an open tuning if you think about it. I say thinking of it like this can make some very interesting riffs and unique songwriting capabilities that you could explore, so have fun with this if you want. You’re even using this idea in your video as you create really large chords that are reminiscent of an open tuning. So I see that great minds think alike, whether realized or not

Great video and playing man, especially on those solo sections. Good ideas to work on and yeah, I was also using drop D just for the riffs mostly and not so much as a base. But I think, in my noob opinion, that you should use more of that D string in those arrangements that you do as it sounds great already but with your style of playing it could sound much more awesome, because you would use that D string more in the main stuff and not just in the loop.

Beautiful playing man! I use drop D a lot for those heavy style riffs, but incorporate a lot of melody and I guess, kind of unconventional sounding drop D riffs. But I occasionally play around on acoustic and utilise the droning aspect of it. Dropping the high E string to D also, gives an even darker sounding drone and opens up new chord options.

If I actually knew chords this would be more informative. But my natural curiosity already uses the D tuning as a drone sound note… you also have a lot of chord structures that are different from standard. That’s why you also try tunings like DADGAD and what not. Coldplay also has some weird tunings that can play really hard or melodic.
