I spent some time trying to find the answer to this. Thank you for the information!

The final result of return channel E swallowing all the heavily effected sound is a very pleasing moment where the sound seems to be sucked down and nothing remains. Lovely!

This might a new thing in 11 but if you're going to send Return FX back to a regular audio channel or bus in the main mix... disable all the sends on that bus and you wont get the comb filtering/doubling issue. makes zero sense but it works. It's how I solved for this when I was setting up my old template. I had multiple mix busses all grouped together into my 2 bus. The return FX thing drove me insane and almost killed the entire set up but lo and behold, disabled all sends on my mix busses and 2bus group and boom. No more doubling. I don't know what it is about the sends in ableton but they can cause all sorts of weird interactions even at -inf.

thx man! an even better solution. :) I had same issues and it got to a point where i even wanted to switch to another DAW, because the returns just worked there! Glad that i have this info now, cause i love ableton. cheers

V good and clearly explained! Thanks! Don´t understand why sending return tracks into a audio bus have to generate delay though. Cannot a track delay setting deal with this? Or is it too difficult to get accurate?

Absolutely spot on, we’ve been releasing tracks for years and never even thought of this… Tried the first option but the ability of solo disappears.. Good trick.. Shame Live needs a hack, but love it.. MMFF

hey was just checking this video out. i also had issues with this. I think if you disable sends on the grouped track, then the delay compensation works. have you tried that?

I absolutely LOVE Liam as a teacher! That being said, I'm confused as to why you wouldn't release an Ableton 11 New Features video.

Doh, I missed that! A good reminder to look into my notification and subscription settings! Possibly a newb question, but can you subscribe to a channel and filter that channel's feed? For example, you guys put out a great deal of content that is not particularly useful to me (Logic, Fl, etc) so it's possible I unsubscribed on accident? Can't stress how much I admire Liam's approach, so I have that playlist saved. There's maybe an option there.

04:29 You can offcourse disable all the sends on the FX Group you talk about here. You wont have any delay issues.
@YiggaP3 жыл бұрын
Yes!! I've ran into this issue a few weeks back and found the solution is to disable the sends so there is no infinite loop. Ableton can't calculate delay compensation because it's a infinite loop! But I didn't think to use another return track, that's smart too 😇
@YiggaP3 жыл бұрын
And if you already used all your returns then well.. you're screwed 😊
@BurnedwOw3 жыл бұрын
yes, this is the best way... ofc the workaround in the vid works as well, but if u want to have a premaster track without touching the masterbus you ran into the same delay compensating issue

Hey, Liam. This got me thinking now: does just standard grouping/bussing in Ableton cause any time delays? I've noticed a difference in how send/return effects are processed on a group versus if I do it on the individual tracks (ie; drums, synths, even if I highlight all and turn up the knobs). Now I'm sitting here wondering if I group too often, because I tend to group ALL my instruments, even during the creation process.
@fjprobeats3 жыл бұрын
Thanx Man, very good explanation. i left with one question, when i route all my mix to a group to be able to compare to reference track, can i route the return´s group to the group with all my mix? thanx
@benfillion2329 Жыл бұрын
For my mixes I usually use Auxs 1-4 for delays, and Auxs 5-8 for Reverbs. I will usually use the sends on delay Auxs 1-4 to my Reverb Auxs 5-8. Would having all of the FX Auxs set to send only still work? Or would this be too CPU intensive to recommend doing?

Great video thank you. Quick question ,do we ever need to lower the fader on a return track? I have seen some protocols users lower the return fader but never seen an Ableton user do this.

great explanation!!!! but I have a question.. lets say in my mix I have the drum group routed to a audio track which Im calling the Total music bus. I have both my drum and instruments group routed to this track so I can control their overall volume with the fader in relation to the voz ( which I have route to another seperate audio track) my question is.. .can I apply this fx process to gain more control over the fx of each channel before they reach the master bus? so instead of controlling the fx from the sends in the total music bus I control them from a separate fx track ?
