What kind of mix, like a DJ mix or a song? If you want to leve out individual tracks I talk about that in my DJ mix video with Ableton. You could use gain to automate elements in your mix yes, but I would not use it to gain up your whole mix past unity and clip so be careful. I guess I honestly do not understand your question. Its a bit too broad.
