A Schmorgle once said he would try every DAW ever made and when he definitely said that he definitely meant it. Today, we cross Reason off that list. I take a dive into the unknowns of this program completely blind, and I do my best to make anything listenable. Did it mainly make me think of The Reason by Hoobastank? Yes. Did I still have blast trying it out? Also yes.

Reason is My DAW for 17 years, started on Reason 2.0 in 2006 that Subtractor synthesizer you used is the first Reason Sythersizor. Reason is capable of allowing you to create anything Hiphop, Trap, Drill, Techno, Future Bass, Drum n Bass, Classical, Ambient and on and on. The Reason device's are often very well designed, but 3rd party devices are available such as Synapse audio Obsession a Obrahim OBXA emulation and sounds excellent. I like Ableton but I'd dont run on My laptop at all but Reason runs perfect, which is My last point, Reliability it works on the widest range of computer, even if your computer is garbage, Reason will run.

Yea i forgot to make that point in my rant above lol EXTREMELY stable and reliable, vst’s were little shaky at first, but even that is pretty ironclad now, but if your only using RE’s, you can run on any cpu basically, and if you have an even semi decent one, you can prob still run like 50 synths at once lol

One of the oddest things about Reason is that the feature that seems at first glance to be the most gimmicky, the cables on the back of the rack, is where the Pandora’s Box of mega complexity hides.

Its exactly the same as hardware sythersizors of the past and today, My Novation Peak has CV, Gate, send via jack sockets which I can hook up to other synthesizers. Euro Rack both physical and software version like VCV rack is all about Cables. Reasons back of Rack is classed as Semi Modular where VCV Rack is fully modular.

Messing with the wires is the best part of Reason. What's funny is that I started using Reason in 2000 and got the whole wire thing right away. When I was introduced to node-based visual editing in programs like Houdini and Davinci Fusion later, I couldn't wrap my head around it until I realized that it's pretty much the same thing as wires and modules in Reason. Then it clicked for me.

Back when Reason 3 came out their demo allowed you to work on a song for 20 minutes without a save function with the full program.. And that's how I started down the rabbit hole of music production at 13 There was also a free midi program I used that was for writing sheet music that had all the OG midi sounds that I used before that but Reason was my first experience with the big boy toys I wish I could go back and listen to some of those 20 minute songs I made.. some of them were straight fire

i have been using Reason since version 4 (now using version 12). its a real studio packed in a computer program. i think it's a very underrated and overlooked software. you are right when you say "it's ready to make some sound". that's very true but if you will dig into features you could discover features that really mindblowing. tha backpanels allow very complex and sophisticated rerouting and n top of all this Reaon is RELIABLE. i have used it for some live sets and, trust me, Reason is not just a DAW but even a perfect companion on stage. pity that Reason is so underrated because it's worth of every single penny it costs.

Reason is made for analog people, everything from mixer to every individual device, is its own analog entity, even the sequencer and mixer are independent of each other, so you can do as many parallel mixing channels as you want and busses ect without cluttering sequencer, and same with adding midi lanes without effecting mixer, like mixing and sequencer are treated like 2 seperate units, i frigin love it as someone who came from analog, SSL makes mixing so easy once u get it too, KONG alone, is basically an mpc within the daw, it has synth, sample, drum modules and fx modules “in” it, that when you open bottom, you can build completely different patch on each pad with different fx on each, you can do parallel processing right in it and link the 2 pads, then send to mixer n sequencer as 1 finished signal, it really is powerhouse of a machine, way beyond a “drum designer” lol, you can make whole profuctions with just KONG, if you just think of sequencer as your mpc screen, you can really just use it like an mpc “within” the daw, and thats just 1 device in rack lol, all of its designed like real analog machines, and most all the synths further open up, and all have there own built in fx modules, so you can perfect the sound “within” the synth, before going out to sequencer/mixer, it just really feels like your using individual pieces of gear rather than “a program” n thats why im reason 4 life 💪🏼
@illyph9963
@illyph9963 Жыл бұрын
However i will say my 1 gripe with the “analog” signal flow and cables, is when your mixing vocals, or drums, and you start using insert fx, it will turn the mono signal stereo, and you manually have to flip rack and unhook right wire to keep signal mono, or hold shift when you drag effect in so it dosent route, and just route left wire yourself, but this is def an annoying thing I sometimes forget and overlook till 8 steps later🤦‍♂️😡🤣, def a tiny fix they need to make, i havnt updated to 12 yet so they may have fixed it, but if not they need to in 13 lol, like if you start with a mono channel, whatever you drag on to channel shud auto route “mono” also.....and also as someone who does foley n score work too, we need a dam vid player device for timing to vid, im sick of using vidplayvst lol, give us a native player🙏....but other than those 2 gripes i love it lol

So I’ve been using Ableton for the past year or so. It was just the most common name I had heard for making electronic music so that’s what I chose. And since Ableton is so widely used, there are tons and tons of resources and tutorials supporting it. I’ve been looking into other DAWs mostly just out of curiosity, and the first thing that stands out to me about Reason is how many great sounding instrument racks, synths, and audio effects are available to immediately jump into. While Ableton’s stock instruments didn’t jump out to me as much. Not sure I’m looking to switch over since I’m so used to Ableton at this point, but Reason does look super fun to play around in.

Man there's nothing else like reason out there...tried a lot of stuff,im an Ableton + reason guy since quite long, but now im doing live stuff, and man reason standalone just kills it....try using it with a nice big touch monitor.... you'll probably never use anything else again 😂 Of course for making a track, Ableton sequencer+rrp is my go to. But I've found that using reason standalone is much quicker for live sets which are not clip based, but device based, the last time i used Ableton for a live gig, i got feedback that, oh ure just triggering midi clips, whats the big deal in that...so i moved away from clip based stuff...now i try using reason devices rather than midi clips. Although rack navigation is where reason is lacking a little, because reason rack tends to really get very big very quickly, so there is a need to navigate to certain devices quickly, which could be done using rack markers i think(if they implement it)... would be very useful for live sets, rather than fumbling around with the scroll bars etc...

Ok. I've worked in Reason since the early 2000s. So I'm gonna go along and clarify some shit, since you've already gotten to play with it blind. Firstly, its immense. Just out of the box, no subscription, no humongous 20 year library of "refills" (all our add-ins, pretty much), its still massive and would take you a good while to master the way you're going about it. Secondly, yes the UI emulates the physical recording studio. That was the draw for me, coming from the analog world. I recognized what stuff was and knew how to patch it up, etc. You can also do stuff on the back of the rack more easily, sometimes, depending on what you're trying to accomplish. Its like modular synths, you can configure every parameter manually. Things are way better now, we didn't use to be able to use live instrumentation, you had to "rewire" into another daw like Cubase to play a live instrument or record a vocal track. The second big development for us was getting external plugin support. The original idea was to make a rock stable daw, because long long ago, they all used to crash like crazy unless you were running a 10k system in a pro studio. Computers just hadn't come far enough to support them yet. Reason got around all that by keeping everything self-contained, your system didn't have to try to handle running multiple programs when you were composing. However, that hobbled us, so if you had that great Abbey Road plugin or a drum program you loved, you either had to do some advanced level hacking to backdoor things or you were just s.o.l. In reason 9 they finally solved the problem and now we can incorporate whatever. I LOVE Reason, it has a gargantuan library of add-ons you can purchase, made both by them and other developers, the newest stuff they're incorporating is really cutting edge, there's not much you can't do. The biggest drawback I can think of is that I believe we're still waiting for VST3 support, so if you've got a big library of VST3 plugins be forewarned. Your channel has a great concept and your delivery is really enjoyable, am subbing now. Thanks!
