ABO Incompatibility in Newborns | ABO Incompatibility in Pregnancy - Causes, Symptoms & Treatments
ABO incompatibility in newborns occurs when a mother and her baby have incompatible blood types, leading to an immune reaction. This usually happens when the mother has type O blood and the baby has type A, B, or AB blood. The mother's immune system may produce antibodies against the baby's red blood cells, causing them to break down (hemolysis). This can lead to symptoms in the newborn, such as jaundice, anemia, and hepatosplenomegaly. Diagnosis involves blood tests and Coombs tests, while treatment may include phototherapy, exchange transfusion, or intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). Regular monitoring and early intervention during pregnancy can help prevent severe complications.
