One of the secrets that Capitol Reef holds is their fruit orchards where all of the fruit is picked and eaten by both the park visitors and wildlife. This was something we were not aware of before visiting. We'll stop off at the sign for a photo, then the visitors center to gather some info about the park and get Abby her t-shirt. Afterwards we head over to the U-Pick orchards to pick some apples amongst the deer vegging out.

33 dozen?! That's nearly 400 pies. To regularly sell that many in less than a day in such a remote area is amazing.

I used to go through Capitol Reef often on the way from Colo. to Loa Ut. with loads of corn to a dairy and a hog farm on the west side of Loa. And a little feed mill north of Loa on hiway 72.

That is a beautiful park. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw you two walking amongst the several 6 and 8 point bucks, just standing there and looking at you.....mind boggling!!!!! That must have been a wonderful experience.

Hope you guys come to Hutchinson Kansas. The underground salt mines, they have tours, the midnight mystery game. The Kansas Cosmosphere, exhibits of space capsules that have been to the moon, Hendrix’s zoo, if you need a spot to park, I will offer you a enjoyable spot. Love your podcast and your tours. Hutchinson has much more to offer.

Abby, I noticed your Turquoise ring. I had a simple one years ago that was silver with Turquoise and Abalone in the repeating triangle pattern. Navaho IIRC. It was a #6 size. No chips, solid pieces. I was heartbroken when I lost it. If you ever run across one in your "scavenger hunts" I'll pay twice what it costs you...

Hope you went to the end of the "Scenic Drive" inside the park to the "Capital Gorge Road". That road takes you through a very narrow canyon that's truly spectacular. Then there is a trail head at the end of the road that is an easy walking trail through some narrow slot canyons with petroglyphs on the walls. Amazing place, Capital Reef NP.

I imagine this advice comes a couple of weeks late but when taking still photos of strongly shadowed features such as the arches in the national park of the same name, use a tripod if possible and the HDR feature on your camera if you have one. Even many phone cameras include a high dynamic range feature that allows your camera to expose for the brightly lit surfaces as well as the shadowed areas. Hopefully, Abby, being at least semi-pro skilled already knew this.

Deer are browsers so they prefer leaves, buds and soft bark to grasses. They undoubtedly keep the trees trimmed up so it's easy to walk under them.

Maybe something simpler such as a fruit and yogurt salad would be an easier choice. Pies are readily available nearby, at least if you beat the crowd. One of the first rules of leisure travel is 'don't make unnecessary work'.

Different varieties of apples ripen at slightly different times. It's surprising that the orchard owners haven't marked the varieties on the trees given that it's a tourist attraction.

What's the origin of the name Capital Reef National Park? I've heard of the term reef being used to describe geologic formations or deposits on the surface but I'm unaware of what it's referring to there.

Deer do not have any front teeth on the upper jaw. Their mouth is made to where they can just strip leaves off of a stem.

A little P.O.A these decades.... yes i said decades... If the deer like the apples, eat the apples. If the worms like the apples, eat the apples. Bottom line. If Natures creatures like the fruit, EAT the fruit.
