Understanding spirituality is difficult in today’s fast paced world. Does the world of theology still offer something to a more secular modern world? Are there lessons to learn from a more spiritual path that can help us make sense of issues like morality? Or is spirituality best left to the past according to some modern day atheists and skeptics? What does it even mean to be spiritual in an enlightened world? Hear from a wide variety of guests on the benefits, struggles, and problems with religion with this playlist:

You seem to misunderstand the point of Catholicism. We are NOT seeking power. We propose a way of living life which would bring about eternal happiness, and we hope people take the time to understand the reasons for those ways. It is then their choice to accept this call to a new way of life. We do not and can not and don't want to enforce any thing on anyone. We all have free will to accept or walk away.

There isn't just one point to catholicism. You seem to have a very gentle approach which is in contrast to the catholic view of salvation only though jesus and the trinity. And there is HELL to pay for deviating. So I would say that yes, most catholics were forced to become catholics because of who they were born to.

Yes, It is true that we believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that he gave us guidance on how to live our lives. As Bishop Barron says, He, through the Church, sets the bar high on its demands, but also offers unlimited mercy for those who are contrite about their sins. And yes, there are real consequences for intentionally turning away from God. And thank you for correcting me, that is not the point of Catholicism, but rather it's not the aim of Catholicism.

+ChaosTherum Who told you that dribble? Philosophers and academics for centuries have distinguished the different ways we approach the question of the divine. If I asked you whether there are zebras out for the public to see at the LA Zoo right now, you don't have to answer "yes" or "no." That's idiotic. It's only VERY recently that the notion that atheism includes those who simply don't believe in God, and even then it's mostly among "lay folks" (uneducated) that they don't make the distinction. The so called "new atheism," in which Dawkins is considered sophisticated. Nontheism is the simple lack of belief. Atheism is an active assertion that there is no God (a- as a prefix implies opposition, an explicit rejection). Agnosticism is the belief that we cannot know for sure. Theism, generically, is the belief there is one or more divinities. Are there zebras for the public to see at the LA zoo right now? "Not as far as I know." "Absolutely not." "I can't know for sure." "Yes!" That's four answers right there, and there's a dozen more possibilities. This isn't even Philosophy 101. This a primer of critical thought... What you said implies incredible ignorance of the subject matter.

I guess I will be the crank just because I can. I like Fr.Barron kinda and after a fashion. He is now part of the American Bishops Council and they put out a steady stream of crap so their is that. Also each of the topics he touches on can be done better by a non churchman and I say this as a Catholic. It is as though he is hamstrung by his position. I on the other hand will happily point out that gay marriage as a legally encouraged thing is generating less gays and is very stupid for everyone. Did u see the crowd at Pence's house? It would have been ten times that size twenty years ago. Gay males are more common further down the birth order so families of less than two (now the avg. less immigrants) generate virtually no gays. The organizer and lead ass clown dancer of the Pence shindig is Iranian (ya can't make this up). No offense about the ass clown thing the guy in question looked literaly like a clown. The situation is worse for lesbians but it takes longer so another day. You should try Mark Stein for climate change and getting his ass rhemed by "human rights" courts. very good in the main, thx to the Padre as well.

That's not true at all, it's perfectly reasonable to consider how the new life's dependency upon the mother came about in the first place. It's potentially vital in determining whether or not she has an obligation to them.
@kingxerocole4616

Right, because the fundamental problem with a victim of rape who gets pregnant is _not_ the baby. It's a society that doesn't know how to take care of both without ending a life, so everybody kills the baby and tries to forget it. It's a pathetic, primitive excuse for justice.

How about I give them a free society where they can be educated to make their own choices and accept responsibility for them? That's why I taught health curriculums on Chicago's South Side throughout college. How about you stop treating grown adults like they're helpless idiots? If an 18 year-old hits someone with their car, they have to accept responsibility. It's not my job to make sure they don't become bankrupt from one mistake. Law should be consistent. I simply believe abortion is murder and should be illegal, except when the mother's life is at risk. Of course, less than 1% of abortions are conducted for that reason, but it's brought up by every pro-choice advocate when they have no more rational arguments.
@kingxerocole4616
@kingxerocole4616 7 жыл бұрын
+Rick Harris No, I taught students sexual health and decision-making so they would _become_ responsible. If someone is not responsible or mature enough to know the consequences of having sex, then they shouldn't have sex. A child is not a punishment, it's a child. Just because the parents don't want to have the baby doesn't mean they should have the right to kill it. Do you think parents should be allowed to murder their kids whenever they don't want them anymore? No? Well that's how I feel about unborn babies. They shouldn't be murdered just because they're inconveniencing the parents. That's not justice.
@kingxerocole4616
@kingxerocole4616 7 жыл бұрын
+Rick Harris That's the entire argument, kid: I believe a fetus is an unborn baby, you don't. Even though it has a heartbeat, fingerprints, its own blood type, and its own DNA. Do you think it should be legal to kill up to 9 months? At what specific week in the pregnancy does your moral outrage at killing the fetus begin? Playing these semantic games makes you and other pro-abortion advocates sound deranged and in denial. You can't admit it's a viable human life, so you resort to dehumanizing language. It's pathetic.

@josiahjohnson1833 7 жыл бұрын
King Xerocole It's like you believe in science or something! Lol, I don't see how people can view a fetus as subhuman when all the science and common sense is right there. The condom argument is so dumb too. Apparently these people don't know that there is a major biological difference between sperm and fertilized egg. Regardless of religious beliefs, it's just common sense. Question if you don't mind: in your opinion, why is murder wrong? I think it's interesting when someone believes in moral relativist (I assume you are) and opposes abortion. If you don't believe in morality as a construct of the divine, then murder is wrong simply because it is bad for society. If that is the case, there is a strong argument that singlemotherhood is bad for society where abortion really doesn't have adverse effects. I'd be really interested to see your perspective on the matter and how you would refute that claim. I'm not trying to argue or anything, I just want to get an idea of how an anti-abortion atheist thinks since I mostly hear from Christians

Can I just say this? As a Catholic on KZbin, I typically come across videos on religion and look at the comment section to find flame wars and unintelligent comments on both sides. This video is different however, both in the content of the dialogue and in the comment section. This is so refreshing and enriching. I wish we would stop having silly debates about God's existence and instead we could merely engage in these kind of dialogues. I think they are much more productive for both sides.

What if what you are doing is actually worthy of judgement? What if you are doing something that God has commanded against, which by defenition will lead you to death? What if the truth us more important than your feelings and you should start getting serious about your soul. I have had homosexual impulses as well, but the loving union with God (only achieveed through Jesus Christ) is stronger than any lustful temptation. But first you'd have to admit to yourself that any other sexual union other than that of man and woman, is sin. It leads you away from God. It stains the persuit of rightousness. Do you understand?

On abortion: "We press it now more BECAUSE of science, in a more radical way." God bless you, Bishop. More people need to know that the Church's modern position on abortion and contraception was crystallized after an exhaustive study on population growth and human economic welfare. So...yeah, we thought about.

We did think about it, but we must always emphasize that we don't value the life of the unborn above the life of born children and their mothers. We value ALL of life and want to see it cherished, nourished and nurtured from conception to natural death. Only then will our stand carry water in the secular world.

Exactly, Catholicism is neither left nor right. In some cases it is conservative. In some cases, it's liberal. It always comes down on the side of the sanctity of human life, sexuality and the dignity of the person. Sometimes that means opposing abortion. Sometimes it means opposing the death penalty. Sometimes that means opposing gay marriage. Sometimes it means fighting for immigrants. But, it always means defending human dignity and worth.

@ No Sherlock - This... isn't even clearly a conversation between the "left" and "right." Sure, both of the interview participants espouse views commonly held by either side, but that doesn't automatically make this a political conversation, nor does it make either of these individuals a spokesperson for either side. Furthermore, in terms of social benefit, I would recommend that all of us consider the idea of refraining from the bipolar categorization of people as being "left" or "right" in the first place. What good does it truly do except create a perceptual divide between people when, in fact, we are all fellow citizens?

Loved the way the bishop explained what being an actual Catholic is. Don't impose, propose and yes the Church has high moral demands but its also extremely merciful. Basically keep trying to do the right thing, and in the end youll be a better person and society (if every individual is trying) will be a better place.

P.G. Burgess no one perfect so theyre always going to be just as fallible as anyone else. you get to choose to belong or not. If your not part of it and the church is only proposing not imposing (like it should be) then what problem would you have with other people belonging to it.

To me, the 'perversion' is in the mercifull part. The forgiveness of wrongdoings, not by those wronged (with or without legal judgement).. but by an institution. And one with a very 'outspoken' view. A view that is not representative of a general consensus (let alone in accordance to the view held by the person wronged). I always like to ask christians how they would feel, if someone has harmed them (or a loved one).. and see that person walk around with a feeling of redemption, granted to him by some guru.
@joachimpetersen2301
@joachimpetersen2301 7 жыл бұрын
P.G. Burgess its not the institution forgiving the wrong doer, it's God. The institution is just the intermediary. But if you don't believe in God or aren't a Christian then how does it harm you if other people do that. Also, as the bishop said, the wrong doer is supposed to turn himself in to face legal judgement or try to make amends for there wrong if it's what they did wasnt a crime. Also part of being a Christian is trying to forgive those who do harm against us. The church might be outspoken but it's kind of like advertising. Mcdonalds blasts ads all over TV and every else, but in the end you chose to buy that cheeseburger. Likewise the church does the same but in the end you choose to join or not. Propose not impose.

Christianity, especially Catholic and smilar others, is the lazy version of Judaism. Instead of having all stages of redemption which is regret, confession, promise not the reapet the act again and making this promise truth, you satisfied with the two and to make it worser you doing it by talking to human being, flesh and blood, and not directly to God. There's no redemption for evey act, your like your leftie grandchildren children who thinks intentions are more important then acts.

I used to be pro choice until a friend of mine showed me an actual recorded abortion. Her class was shown this so she showed me, and I have to say it changed me. When I saw that tiny little baby dead, I broke down on the inside. I don't feel like many pro choice people correctly visualize what an abortion is, maybe they don't want to. I heard all the typical extreme scenarios, "what if she's raped" or "what if it was an accident"; and honestly I used to agree with them. Why bring a baby into this world if it can't be loved or property taken care of? But since that video I look at it differently; we don't choose where our souls will end up, for I'm certain given the opportunity that baby would've never of chosen that woman to be its mother. It's all random. I would think Liberals and Republicans could agree on this one issue; for Democrats preach equality and equal rights, but when it comes to the unborn it's a different story. Now I know many will still say that a zygote isn't life but ask any biology professor that question and they'd beg to differ. It's growing, eating, reacting to its environment, and maintaining homeostasis... pretty much fits the criteria of life. All I'm saying is it deserves a chance, a chance to be born at least. Proclaiming that life doesn't deserve a chance just because it's inconvenient. It doesn't sit well with me.

@Wuffskers
@Wuffskers 7 жыл бұрын
I see all these moral arguments about when life begins and oh it's a precious human life and we can make arguments like that all we want but none of these actually come with a practical solution in my opinion. Like okay you have an underage girl violently raped and she gets pregnant. Now let's just assume you've won the argument about the "personhood" of the zygote, great, fine whatever...what now? So in addition to the rape, this girl, not woman, girl has to carry the child of the monster that violated her and put her own life in danger for something she didn't want and was violently and horrifically forced upon her. As if that is not enough again I ask...what now? Are you going to expect her to raise this child? what is your solution about what to actually do with the child once it's born? There's lots of idealism that isn't realistic, in many ways I actually don't believe people have a right to children, but I know restricting people's right to reproduce is unreasonable in the real world and would be prone to all kinds of abuse and would probably cause more problems than it solves, and I'm not convinced that making abortion illegal is actually going to save that many unborn lives. If your goal is to make abortion something that basically never happens, I'm not convinced that making it illegal actually achieves that. Also I think there's more than just one specific and explicit threshold during development, for instance the first heartbeat, or the moment brain waves are detectable, etc. I get the impression that the "life begins at conception" people, also don't realize it can take awhile before an egg actually gets fertilized, it's not like after a dude cums then there's a fertilized egg inside the woman, granted it's a pretty wide range between about 30 minutes to 5 days.

Cast Away54444 - I dont know you're position exactly but it sounds like you're still pro choice, but not pro abortion. I dont think anyone would want the mother and child to go through what you described and I certainly dont, but I still think abortions should be made legal, safe and regulated, but as a society we should also try to prevent unwanted pregnancies with things like sex education, birth control, etc. Making abortions illegal will not help anyone, not that you said it should be illegal.

I am a Catholic, and a traditionalist one at that. I used to watch (and still quite frequently watch) Bishop Barron's videos. Over the course of the past year and a half since the election started, I have also been watching a lot of anti-SJW stuff - Stefan Molyneux, Sargon of Akkad, Paul Johseph Watson, and so on. I thought they bring up good points. I disagree with them on a lot of things - especially religion and certain social issues - but this is one area where my views overlap with them. I am not a hard-core Republican, but I am far from a liberal, and I hate people on the far-left. Over time, I started watching a bunch of Dave Rubin's videos. I heard a while ago that he had once been on the Young Turks but left, because he sort of called them out on their progressive B.S. This, combined with his openness to taking part in discussions even with people of the opposite viewpoint, impressed me. I find it cool that the two internet personalities who I respect the most are talking with one another.

@ Dio - Actually I haven't seen any negative comments as I've been scrolling through (though I'm sure that they are there). What I would like to remind you of is this: EVERY group, no matter how you categorize them, is going to have kind people and unkind people. As such, please reconsider painting all atheists with one brush. You know as well as I do that there are religious fuckwits just as much as there are atheist fuckwits. Oh, and also: Dio!!! \m/

So rare to see such a respectful and thoughtful conversation between two people who understand that you don't have to agree on everything to agree on some things and to be completely ok that the other does not agree. Well done, both of you.

What an interview. Dave Rubin maintains absolute grace and refuses to take anything personally and has a truly adult conversation about issues on which him and his guest could not be more opposed. There is hope for humanity. Bishop Barron is equally commendable from the standpoint that he is unafraid to share his views, but in no way vilifies Rubin for not fitting within them.

Toleration comes from Christianity? Good lord, need we look at history? Read Voltaire's "Treatise on Tolerance", a response to Christian intolerance (specifically that of this man's church) in Europe. We're not talking a long time ago here. The church is the way it's been the last few decades out of necessity, not some great moral foundation. Let's not forget how intolerant you acted for so many centuries before your power was lost and you HAD to act tolerant..

You have to compare apples to apples. Compare Christian Europe in the 14th Century, Voltai're time, or whatever, to the rest of the world at that time, not the US in 2017.

Rick Harris Religious yes, Christian no. From the time of Abraham on following the areas of judeo-christian influence they have largely been more tolerant than anywhere else on Earth during the same time period. From the very beginning of the nation of Israel they largely did away with things like child sacrifice (except for when they turned from God and started acting like their barbaric neighbors).

That's because everywhere was a religious place, so it's natural that everywhere that was a fucked-up place would be religious. Atheist regimes have not exactly been sunshine and daisies either

+Peter Brook There's no sense arguing with this Rick fellow. He's probably just trolling based on how insanely stupid most of his posts have been in this comments section have been. Obviously anecdotal evidence like Salem witch trials can't undo thousands of years of philosophical, ethical, and religious traditions. Anyone with a few firing neurons would get that, to turn a phrase.
@langov3
@langov3 7 жыл бұрын
+None1755, +Aaron Reichert You guys are missing the point. It's not that the Salem witch trials make other doctrinal pronouncements wrong or that Christianity should be compared to other religions to see which is more barbaric, the problem is with the collection of 'moral' pronouncements themselves. For instance; 'Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live'. Never mind that this command has been used to justify the irrational killing of undoubtedly innocent women, but witches don't exist! For arguments sake, lets say witches did exist during biblical times. Then the almighty and infinitely wise creator of the universe stood by and watched as his devotees in the 15th century used his outdated text to justify the burning, drowning and hanging of innocent people. I actually blame God more than I blame the perpetrators; he's the one that put this silly notion of witches in their heads in the first place, and they're just scientifically illiterate people trying to make sense of the pestilence, plagues and disasters that befall them. If you're a good Christian in the 15th century then you KNOW there are witches. As for human sacrifice, you'll find him happily accepting the human sacrifice of Jephthah's daughter in judges 11:30-39.

Wonderful video. Just an FYI a therapist does not have to go to authorities when a person has stated they have killed people in the past, in fact they are not allowed to go to police with that information. However, action is required if they are going to take action (Tarasoff decision). With that in mind a priest would not offer absoultion if the confessor states they intend to continue which is in holding with the Tarasoff decision. The real question would be what would happen if a person came into confession, said they were sorry for what they are going to do in the future, and tells the priest who they are going to harm.

Good thing there is a separation of church and state. These rules are fine those who are Christian, but the legality of abortion, gay marriage, and porn are civil issues and not subject to Christian rules.

Ashton Francis Abortion is not publicly funded! How much longer do we have to keep yelling this before people like you start to listen?
@jos_meid
@jos_meid 7 жыл бұрын
+Sean Hurley In theory it is not directly publicly funded, but in practice, organizations that preform abortions receive public funding so long as the funding is not 'for abortion'. the problem with that is that with a big organization, giving money will fund the organization as a whole, even parts of it that one is not trying to fund.

Because embryos are not citizens and at that stage is an organism acting as a parasite, unable to survive independently. So if it is unwanted in a woman's body, she has the right to have it out of her body. Separation of Church and state keeps up from becoming a theocracy.
@jos_meid
@jos_meid 7 жыл бұрын
underdawg47 While it is true that embryos are not citizens, it is not true that they are not human. Is it ok to murder a foreign national because they are not a citizen? Of course not. That is because the measure of whether it is murder or not even under the most secular laws is not dependent on whether the victim is a citizen or not. The parasite argument is really not a strong one. that is because they do not suck blood or nutrients from the mother, but rather the mother's body actively pumps nutrients into the fetus. The government can neither establish a religion nor prohibit the free exercise thereof, but that does not mean that politicians can not use their religious beliefs to help shape their political beliefs.

I don't know of any foreign nationals living inside the body of a woman. If there is something living inside my body and I don't want it there, I will have it taken out.

The conversation about confession and murderer reminds me of Cavalry, one of my favorite movies of all time, it's an Irish film that starts out with a confession where the confessor, after explaining how he was molested as a child, says he's going to kill the priest, because what's the point in killing a bad priest, but killing a good priest 'that'll get'em'. its a powerful, emotional, and if i may say, existential film
