Understanding spirituality is difficult in today’s fast paced world. Does the world of theology still offer something to a more secular modern world? Are there lessons to learn from a more spiritual path that can help us make sense of issues like morality? Or is spirituality best left to the past according to some modern day atheists and skeptics? What does it even mean to be spiritual in an enlightened world? Hear from a wide variety of guests on the benefits, struggles, and problems with religion with this playlist:

@@publius1252 my comment is none of those things you said but let me try a bit harder for you :- barron is an expert at talking about what he cannot possibly know, he spews out bs trying to make it sound all intellectual but bs it still is. And the organisation that pays for his life has produced more sex abuse victims than any other organisation in recorded history, by far. The churches policy of moving paedophiles to new areas, bullying victims and putting the church reputation before stopping rapists and protecting children is disgusting. So my friend let the catholic church die out which it will, eventually. Ffs nuns killed babies in Ireland. Today, do we need the catholic church/barron something born from mans mind and ignorance and the church has been consistently wrong in its ever changing interpretation of the bible and what god wants. I feel sorry for jesus, he was practicing jew, thats how jesus lived yet christianity ignores that and makes it own rules up, its pathetic. Maybe barron should try a proper job instead of walking around dressed like an arse leaving a verbal trail of bollocks wherever he goes.

@@amanda.collaud Hey there. I would really wait before saying the mother of God allmighty is just an ordinary woman. The Hail Mary Prayer is the fulfillment of what mary fortold herself. This prayer is straight out of scripture: Luke 1:28 "And he [the angel Gabriel] came to her [Mary] and said, 'Greetings, favored one! The Lord is with you.'" Luke 1:41-42 "When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the child leaped in her womb. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and exclaimed with a loud cry, 'Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb.'" After wards in the prayer we plead for her intercession to her son. Which is part of jewish tradition. Where the mother of the king was always highly venerated and asked for the favor of her son. Luke 1:48 “For he hath regarded the low estate of his handmaiden: for, behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.” Have you called that woman blessed yet? Don't you want to become part of her prophecy? God bless.

You read the bible but choose to ignore what Jesus says about His body and Blood : kzbin.info/www/bejne/kISwkoRpd8t_ec0 I see you did not understand that Jesus is in the confessional and you are not confessing to the priest but to "Jesus Himself". What protestant who so loves Jesus would not give all they have to tell Jesus, in person, they are sorry for their sins and get special graces and blessings for taking the time to make this special meeting. (I mean, seriously, if you did something to hurt someone, would you just say you are sorry without meeting them in person to tell them?) You kind of missed that, when you "used to be Catholic" and you also missed that the mass readings "is the bible" and "Jesus is present" in case you want to ask questions. You kind of missed that monks gave their lives to hand write and preserve the bible so that all the world, protestants included, could read the bible today. Also, the priest sacrifices his life so you can have the Words of the bible, in "Jesus' Presence", every single day of your life if you choose, not just one day or in some bible study. You can't get a more personal relationship with Jesus than in the Catholic Church.

Bigtombowski as they should, it was a really messed up situation. Certain catholic dioceses and priests messed up big time, and should be criticized. But just cause some dioceses messed up does not mean the church as a whole is evil. lol I'm gonna stop talking cause I could go on forever
@zephyr056
@zephyr056 7 жыл бұрын
+Bigtombowski Well Bishop Barron put "church sex scandal" as the headline or title of this video. The church is now trying to turn the sex abuse issue into a winner for themselves. They are telling how bad it was and how hard they are trying to stop it happening and how much they care for the abused children. And the next thing we will know the Catholics will be telling how wonderful the leaders are to repair the damage and they will forget who it was that done the abuse in the first place.
@agentjs09
@agentjs09 7 жыл бұрын
What a strange viewpoint. How can this situation ever be a winner for the Catholic Church? It sounds like you are really reaching here. There are some people outside of the Church who are legitimately concerned about the victims of the sex abuse scandal. Those people are on the same side as those within the church who are just as upset and wanting to make changes to prevent it from happening again. There are others who are not concerned for the victims, but who love that the abuse happened and revel in it, simply because they hate the Catholic Church and want yet another excuse to beat us over the head. It is pretty evident that you are one of the latter.
@zephyr056
@zephyr056 7 жыл бұрын
+agentjs09 The holy leaders had done everything they could to attack the victims and cover it up. It is now that these very leaders are preaching how they care for the victims and are trying to help them. This clearly shows it to be a damage control action. So to limit damage can be seen as a winner. And yes, I do have a hatred for the Catholic leaders. The Catholics do not only specialize in sex abuse. They do other bad things too.
@zephyr056
@zephyr056 7 жыл бұрын
caroline Karungi Yes I accept that priests are brothers, uncles, sons etc and they are real people. But there are issues that make the fact that they are priests, a relevant issue. In many cases it was being a priest that gave them access to the children and as was shown, gave them protection that outside offenders would not have had. I accept that it was a relative small percentage of priests that were to blame for the abuse. But from what I have read it was a huge percentage of the leaders who did the cover ups and allowed it to continue. And I can imagine that there were innocent priests hurt by the situation and were robbed by being restricted or made to feel guilty of having closeness or innocent affection from children.

Praised be Jesus and Mary! So pleased to see many non-Catholics happily listening to Bishop Barron and not defensively. Rarely does anyone convert over a single conversation, so whether or not they agree, I am just happy that they listened. Debates are good, but I could hardly expect anyone to believe without sincerely attempting to pray, with at least an attitude of "Well, IF this is true, then I should know it." Experience proves what reason alone will never prove. Anyone can get frustrated that its a bad argument, a non-argument, poor logic, a cop-out or whatever. But no, it is not an argument; it's a recommendation, if you want to know! Take it or leave it! God bless these two and their listeners!

To say that people with no faith can't live as fulfilling lives is insane and it implies that he has a quantitative measure of life fulfilment.

Interstice Well, keep in mind, he didn't have time to articulate beyond his argument form contingency to further arguments great philosophers and theologians have put forward for, say, the Incarnation. Such arguments do exist and I'd encourage you to look deeper into these. The argument from contingency isn't the only argument for God's existence either. There's the argument from change, from being and essence, from efficient causality, among many, many others. This was just a foretaste and not meant to be an impenetrable defense, but like an Abstract you'd read on the front of a paper
@interstice8638
@interstice8638 7 жыл бұрын
If you can find holes in the abstract of a paper, it speaks volumes about what you would find within its body. Most of what I see are just the "god of the gaps" arguments. The unknown should remain unknown until it can be proven, and to fill it with a best guess based on an ancient manuscript that has been translated poorly is anti-scientific, and impedes discovery. Objective moralities can be found in secular philosophy, there is no need for religion in modern times.

All people should go not for other people, or things, or to change anything externally. But to humble oneself before the Lord God and ask for His mercy. Changing oneself spiritually that will manifest itself in normal everyday life is the key. The bar for this is high as the Bishop explains, but is set high for a reason and should always be striven for

It isn't the original pre-denominational Church, the Orthodox church is. The catholic church split from the church in 1054 when the Catholic church wanted the bishop of Rome to have universal jurisdiction (ie. the pope) along with disagreements over the source of the Holy Spirit. So you could actually argue that the Catholic church is the FIRST denominational church.

Paul D. Then where is the rock that Christ built the church? Is it the Patriarch of Alexandria? Constantinople? Moscow? Nope. Christ gave that authority to one man, Peter, not one of the other apostles. Therefore his is the one office that is the rock upon which the church rests, and no amount of Patriarchs can hold that same authority. Hence why the councils of the Eastern Churches have constantly failed and the Eastern Communion is full of confusion on who's part of it and who's not.

I'm gonna edit in everything else I noticed; "Religion is a mental illness." "This guy [the bishop] is a piece of shit." "Bored of his babbling." "Imaginary friend." "Imaginary deity." "I tried listening but couldn't help thinking BULLSHIT." "What is this tool?" "The mental gymnastics he does is amusing." "Religion is so fucking stupid. Any half witted atheist could destroy this clown in a debate." "This guy is overflowing with bullshit." "No kicking Bishop Barron up the arse? Shame." Keep in mind, these are all from different commenters.

To be honest I'm a little sad about this guest because I've heard all of his arguments before. So most of the conversation is pretty boring and sometimes a little frustrating, because Dave doesn't push back against his arguments, which is just his usual style. I don't think pointing out fallacies in his arguments counts as being triggered, but I understand that it's *in* now to deflect criticism of SJW onto regular people, even if it doesn't quite fit them. So I guess have fun with the accusations.

But I can say I was raised very religious by devout Catholic parents. I got into many debates with my father, but he respected my own views. Like I said, I was so invested in my pursuit that I was either going to become a priest or an atheist.

This is a very civil and great discussion. I appreciate Dave Rubin for asking very honest questions with an intention to let the ideas out rather than to corner the other person. Bp. Barron is a passionate witness to the gospel. There's always the question of why I need God, if I can be a good person and if I am satisfied with my life. You can understand the position of Bp. Barron and other Christians, if you understand their basic strong faith that our life on earth is just the preparation and the beginning of life eternal; that humans are not created for a very insignificant span of 80 or 90 years; that what doesn't last doesn't matter much. Our death is compared to our birth, when the child would have felt like dying and being thrown out of existence from the mother's womb, only to find that being in the womb was just the preparation for life outside the womb. You may not believe in eternal life and judgment. But if you do, then definitely you would want to know who God is and what was His intention in creating you, what account are we to give to the one who made us and to whom we are answerable.

bishop makes an enormous mistake: atheists dont stop wondering, they just dont make assumptions without evidence. he jumps to a conclusion that has no basis in fact and is solely derived from a bronze age book. all his arguments kinda went the window at that point. you cant say "well, i dont know so must be god" and be content with that non-answer.

He makes a heavy distinction between wonder in the spiritual and the physical world. No one has evidence for jackshit on what happens after death, so saying that you have evidence of what does and does not exist in death is a backwards thing to say.
