I discovered Jordan Peterson 5 years ago. I had been a lifelong atheist. Two years ago I began a faith journey towards Christ. I converted to Catholicism and was baptized in July 2020. Becoming a Christian has been the best single decision of my life. God bless you Dr Peterson!

Hi, big question if you don’t mind answering, I’m on the same path, why did you choose Catholicism?

@@Arzoliz That is a big question! I’ll try to answer as best I can in this context. Oddly enough, the Catholic Faith chose me. Meaning, in a way I could not have planned, and by telling the truth the whole way, I met someone who took me to a Catholic mass. At mass, I was deeply struck by how I was participating in something ancient, beautiful, and true. I kept attending masses, and met a really great priest at my current parish. He asked if I wanted to join the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults, which is the 8-month faith formation program everyone has to participate in to become Catholic. Fantastic! There was no obligation to continue, but I did, which culminated in my baptism. That’s more of the how. But every instance along this journey has only reaffirmed that the Catholic faith was right for me. RCIA itself was an amazing experience. I now volunteer running the program and welcoming new candidates, and I volunteer as lector at my parish, and the community is just phenomenal. The theological tradition is also something that other churches cannot contend with. You become the beneficiary of over two thousand years of interpreting God’s Word (even more than two thousand years of you consider Jewish theological tradition that our faith is built upon). That theological tradition is summarized in an official Church Doctrine called the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which is also an official interpretation of the Bible. So there’s also an authority that comes with the Catholic Faith that no other church has. It was the church started by Jesus and Peter, so it is also the oldest and longest lasting institution in human history. I could go on and on... but basically the deeper I dive into the Bible, Catholic Church doctrine, and theological tradition passed down to us through the Saints, the more I am affirmed that the Catholic Faith is the one true Universal Church. Contact a local parish and inquire about their RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) program if you’re interested. :) I hope that helps!

I started revisiting my old Catholic faith out of curiosity and then discovered the beauty of tradition and historical procession within it. I’m a 32 year old U.S Army Veteran. I found Jordan 4 years ago then I found Bishop Barron 2 years ago. Now I’m back practicing my faith as a Catholic and haven’t missed Mass in over a year and a half. The Confessional has taken the place of Therapists in my life. JimIny Cricket - I am also in some of those categories: back in church after 30 plus years, back in confession (I have two therapists but confession touches my heart like nothing else) and finding Bishop Barron today, am looking into getting confirmed. No place else to look. Got back into church by reading Hostage to the Devil by Malachi Martin. Understanding that evil is absolutely real (and not the way the church teaches btw) sent me back. @@ilik2spit I would advise something a little crazy. Let go of the demand for proof, relinquish that impulse for a set amount of time and commit to the leap. Commit to yourself and to God to live as though you believe all of it, and see what happens. For me, when I let go of the need to prove something I received my proof in stunning ways that I cannot explain outside of the truth of faith. Faith is a strange thing but try to go to Mass, to pray, and to experience the majesty of the faith. Good luck and I'll pray for your journey to lead you home 🙏

@@AleccJamezz Peterson's Psychology of The Bible series was what sparked the first step. You see, I always viewed scripture as just stories that were kind of ridiculous. That series showed me that they were deeper levels to them, if only in a psychological way.. I started to explore that which led me to the Catholic faith eventually. At the time, I was also going through a few things in real life that I'd rather not discuss. Hope that makes sense.

@@Jonathan_Krause being a former atheist all my adult life, I definitely understand the feeling of feeling stupid for believing in God. In my head, that doesn't really go away. I don't know how to explain it. There just comes a point where you take that leap of faith and it fills that emptiness inside perfectly in such a way no relationship, drug, or anything ever could. Once you experience that, you can't deny it anymore. Faith is a verb, it's an action, not an ideal or a concept. I suppose it's never gonna make sense to the head 100%, Im ok with that though.

@@Jonathan_Krause Now, as for not believing in the existence of God, there's nothing I can say to that, you either believe it or you don't, or at least I don't know how to prove it. But I can explain how we (speaking as a Catholic) don't believe in God the tyrant, at all. God doesn't 'sent' people to hell. It's exactly like Bp Barron said, quoting Paul, when he said that nothing can separate us from God's love, no creature, nothing, because even when you kill Him, He comes back and forgives and loves you. He doesn't 'sent' you to hell, totally opposite! He wants to reconcile with you and wants to have you with Him in heaven, even to a point He'll die for you. So, the only way one would end up in hell, is when one decides to and chooses that. That's also what Bp Barron said about the flames of hell are the God's love - because God doesn't stop loving, and His love is constant even when one rejects Him, so it's more about the attitude of the person, not God's. It's one and the same love that's the greatest solace to those who say 'yes' to God. That's the beauty of the faith and the 'Good News', that it's about love. Not about fear, tyranny, coercion.

Luther is the one who changed the Christian Bible to start his own personal version of Sacred Tradition (e.g. Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, etc.) He was very successful at sowing seeds of theological chaos. (Obviously a lot of people started their own Bible projects, like Thomas Jefferson, but Luther's bible seems to be the most popular among non-traditional Christians. )

Through Jordan Peterson I came to understand the importance of sovereignty of the individual, which led to a newfound discovery of religion. Later, found Bishop Barron who later guided me through the Faith, finally leading to my conversion from atheism to Catholicism at the Easter Vigil in 2018. God bless you both.

I have been following Mr. Peterson for a while. I am a Southern Baptist and struggle with some aspects of our doctrine and dogma. The words out of his mouth were exactly my answer to my Wife this morning regarding why I, a diehard Christian, listen to Peterson so much… because so many within the institution of the church itself have dropped the ball of our calling by God to the world & it is to our shame that God has to raise up people outside the church to call us to repentance & into a deep, rich, meaningful relationship with the divine Logos, not to mention with the Spirit of God Himself, known also as the Spirit of Christ. Now I’m not saying there are no good teachers within the church. I’m saying they are becoming exceptionally more rare & the church is in many ways apostate once again, like so many times in history. Absolutely. Depending on what we mean by intellectual , they tend to be anti intellectual, confusing intelligence on universal matters, worldliness. A lot think seminary s are bad in themselves. I understand,.but a lot of people leave education up to whose profession it is. But one thing I noticed, people do become more mentally attuned. They begin to read a lot more, and listen more. And are not easily fooled. For different reasons. First they don't listen to Intellectuals anyway. Which makes the liberal left mad. In the old world, the label intellectual, were raised who were educated In socialist, communistic, ideals I opposed, to the old worlds monarchial rule in Europe and Russia. They tend to be considered revolutionaries , anarchists, and nihilistis.. In america, it tends to broadly educated people, or to progressives, and any intelligent classed person's, conservative or liberal. A person might quip, its,all beyond me. They are intellectuals. Seek wisdom, and understanding, it will greatly aid our humble cond tion. Educating ones self is,a very good thing. To a person who may not be able to read, they may think of some one who can, intellectual..

Catholics and Protestants agree on so much (including many/most of the principal doctrines of Christ), it’s a shame that we focus on the 10-15% of disagreement when we probably agree on a good 85-90%. I’m Catholic and my wife is Protestant and she and I see eye-to-eye on faith-there is much confusion/ignorance about what the ‘other’ side believes but when you begin charitable dialogue and start breaking things down, you’ll find that there’s a lot more in common than you might have imagined. Sometimes we use the same term differently or use different terms to mean the same thing-semantics.

Those first sentences are a damn Scientific Statement. ie Caused an Action...As we live in a Word\Mathematical based Universe. And that is an Axiom...As we use those very tools to discover our Universe and how it works. In Scientific Inquiry everyday..Not to mention communicate with each other.. So these two need to open their minds up. As the Universe we live in. Has at least 10 Dimensions. I'm not even going to touch how Biologist today are freaked out..As the Cell Nucleus is beyond anything humans can comprehend..Analog\Digital Information thought out the cell. In three dimensional form.. it's amazing to behold...It makes humans look like we just discovered fire.. And I want to Know this God. Creator, Outside Agency. In John 14:15, immediately after the verse you cite, Jesus says “If you love me, keep my commandments.” No, he’s not calling Jesus a liar. If you read the Scripture you presume to cite, it’s written that men are tested by God with trials - occasions which challenge a man, and cause him to grow in faith and virtue.

In reply, respectfully, I would ask whether God cares more about the short term pain, or the long term, eternal effects for both those children and the world around them? I have no idea why He allows it, it is certainly a hard pill to swallow as a believer. But, perhaps as mere speculation, those children die and get to be with Him while news of their pain and suffering gets brought to the attention of individuals like yourself. This then forces you to make a choice as to whether you will be like Job and carry on hoping in the fundamental goodness of the world, even though you may not always understand it, and maybe even act in charity to alleviate that suffering, or whether you will curse God and say life is ultimately meaningless.

I understand the point but this type of vocabulary only serves to push them away from the church. I would instead try to get them curious in the history and origins of cristian scripture. If we always just use "come home" it mostly just rolls of there back and they even sometimes disregard you more because you come off sounding arrogant and holier than thou. In my personal life I've seen more of my friends and family convert simple by saying nothing and living like Christ in everything and making the catholic faith the centre of my reality. Had to stop the interview when the started speaking about faith..not because it was anything bad but the opposite. And so I go to the comment section to see who’s also interested in this particular spot of the conversation..faith. I think you are right there. Love is all of those things you mentioned one way or the other. Faith is a choice..you have the capacity to move in it as it’s just an extension of prior experience and evidence..but you don’t have to. JP said it was gratitude and a decision, absolutely it is. The back and forth of this very thing, with yourself and another, even God..especially God is the expression we know as love. Faith reciprocated. It must be tested and proven for it to be expressed. It doesn’t matter how crazy the choices are, that just makes it more sweet..like a mother’s love. The option for failure doesn’t even register. And that’s perfected love..casts out all fear. The book is a marriage proposal. We give our heart to Whom we choose and it makes all the difference. God’s no different. He’s the original hopeful Romantic. Peace to you. Quite hard to convince other people, best thing I think is be happy in yourself and your faith, my friends were very surprised by my conversion, but maybe it strengthened their own faith. I think that JPs description of life being a series of moral choices is correct, though you won't get all of them right, so gotta believe in forgiveness, the golden rule and all that.

I'm not a very religious person myself, but I recognize the Bible as something valuable. Something that has its purpose. Just 50 or 60 or 70 years ago and prior to that almost all scientists were deeply religious. They didn't try to disprove god, but rather to find him in describing nature better with the help of science. But at some point this changed. Was it just the Darwinian discussion of evolution that broke science and faith apart or what was it? When you mention the Bible alone many people are always immediately blocking a conversation, because the Bible is not scientific or historical, thus it must be wrong. Well... no it isn't because it's not a scientific or historical book, it's a spiritual book that tries to express deeper truths in a philosophical sense.

Yes!!! As a Catholic, this conversation brings so much hope to my heart. Everyone in their right mind knows that the Catholic Church is in a very dark crisis. Any God loving Catholic knows it and it is a great source of pain for us. Our Mother Church went astray and watching someone like Jordan point out to someone like Bishop Barron how unbelievable it is that the Church has failed to teach its own teaching, and the tragic consequences of that is really something. Thanks for the replies! I also want to say that I do believe in god. Except it’s hard for me to make the leap and ascribe specific terms to “the nature of god”. Ex) god is love It’s more of an instinct rather than something that I’ve intellectually deduced and characterized. I don’t have a specific image of what god is, but instead have the instinct that “there’s way more than meets the eye”, and that “this universe isn’t dead” is present within me. For me, god is a very important concept that I think is linked with consciousness and humanities evolution. I think god is the limit of abstraction and what consciousness is able to conceptualize. I think god is the final product of abstraction. To me, it’s the instinct to reach for what transcends us and what is incomprehensible(whatever that might be). And I don’t think we’d have that instinct if there wasn’t any utility to it. And if there wasn’t some force driving that instinct. Vague belief I know, but way better than being a nihilist :)

But also reading the bible directly is the best approach to reaching a true, in depth understanding of Christianity. I grew up very similar, and once I read the Gospels and then books like Romans I was shocked at how in depth and different of a religion it was presenting compared to what is commonly, unfortunately discussed at church and throughout much the Christian Community.

I'm Canadian but I'm at this discussion for Bishop Barron. He's not a psychologist but he speaks to me, despite his degrees and profound intelligence. He answers every question directly to my heart. I am body and soul Catholic and I am so grateful for the Bishop. When the Bishop speaks of faith I understand him. Why does it have to be so complicated? Why grope around in the darkness when it's not necessary? For example, if you believe in nothing you've already let go of the branch. I prefer with faith to hang onto the branch, takes less courage, I believe in the promise of God, of a future with Jesus. It's so simple, God made this so simple. If you are looking for fulfillment, become Catholic and spend the rest of your life preparing for eternal life, enjoying the fulfillment of your searching soul enhanced by Scripture, Community, Helping others, Right Praise, Prayer, the Sacraments, the history, beauty and the knowledge shared with other Catholics - of where you are going.

@linlinö önilnil if you want to know the historical details and some of the theological differences you can look up the Protestant Reformation or the Great Schism in Wikipedia. But basically the Church is a family of human beings. Sometimes parents abuse their children who then leave and stop speaking to each other, especially to the parents. Jesus mentions the possibility when he says it would be better for those in authority if they had a millstone put around their neck and thrown into the sea than to cause the little ones to sin. And in another place about how badly it will go for the masters who get drunk and abuse the servants, etc. But on the other hand, it is sin to disobey legitimate authority, particularly because their teaching (not behavior) is reliable. When Protestants do this to each other, one group protests and starts a new denomination. Catholics by definition stay in union with each other, although lately the lack of respect and humility is so severe, one wonders...

@@narre6939 Jesus is the son of the one true and living God. He is a part of the trinity (God the father, God the son and God the Holy Spirit). He is fully God and fully man. He had to be fully Man to show us that he could sympathize with our weaknesses in a fleshly body, he was tempted as we are, but never succumbed because he was also fully God, so that he could obey the law perfectly never faltering once. He also had to be fully God incarnate so that on the cross he could bear the wrath of God (no human could bear this penalty). He rose again to show us that death could not hold him, and that he overcomes death; this is also a reflection of what he does in our salvation ...our dead hearts we were dead in our transgressions and yet God breathes life into our heart reviving it from death to life but we need to believe this not trust in our own selves to save us. Once we trust Jesus life, death and resurrection and that he pardons our sin, we trust God to sanctify our souls, the Christian becomes a willing vessel to be transformed into the image of Christ. We no longer love our sin, we are convicted (not condemned, as there is no condemnation in Christ) by scripture, ask God to gift us repentance daily (as we cannot turn by ourselves, because our flesh is weak) and as he helps us repent we start to look more and more like Jesus. We still stumble and fall, as we still live in our earthly bodies that want to be selfish and put ourselves above God... but there is nothing that God cannot forgive and if we humble ourselves I genuine contrition he will remember our sins no more! Immerse yourself in scripture daily! There more you read the more you hear, if you struggle ask God to reform your hardened heart and transform it to a heart of flesh and he will! Remember salvation is not “feeling as if you have been saved” it’s a knowledge that you are saved by Christ’s finished work on the cross, it is his goodness God sees it is not our works but Christ’s, and that’s the good news. See your sin. Genuinely ask for a humble heart so that you may lay your burdens at the cross, trust that God pardons your sin through Jesus, and live your life in freedom from the wages of sin. This is such good news This free gift of Grace- you cannot earn it you can only receive it and trust it.

Let’s just say it like it is instead of sugar coating it or using metaphors and analogies. “Gods love burns for eternity and that may mean He sends His beloved creation, humans, to hell to be tormented for ever and ever out of love.” Doesn’t sound so good now, right? How about, “Gods love is so vast and infinite that even those with the blackest of hearts cannot resist Him forever.” Doesn’t that have more of a ring of truth to it?
