Excellent record. The whiskered fisherman featured was Derek Galpin, who sadly died in early 2018.

The network tx of this programme was 13th August 1985, in all regions except Granada & Yorkshire who had Roses Cricket. But it was filmed in the summer of 1984, coincidentally my first (half-) remembered visit to Portland (we lived in the south-east at the time) - this is confirmed by the marriage details on Find My Past, and despite the copyright date, I wonder if it was originally part of the first regional run of Country Ways on TVS in autumn 1984?

Hi this episode is from series 1 of Country Ways, not sure what date this went out.

ADC TV Collection - TVSProductions82 I’ve got a transmission list somewhere of the TVS era progs. Series 1 was shown 1984.

Newspapers don't have detailed TVS listings and I don't have any of the relevant TV Times, but do you have any idea of the regional transmissions of Country Ways? (The BFI only lists the networked 'About Britain' tx dates.) If this was shown on TVS first, then it probably wouldn't have been seen by most Portlanders, especially those in lower-lying Fortuneswell and Chiswell - the networked 'About Britain' tx was on TSW, but at 11.30 am in summer rather than 6.30 pm in autumn/winter.

Did they ever do About Britain in the Thames?LWT region?
@ADCTVCollection7 жыл бұрын
Just had a look on the internet, not much is mentioned about the series, but did find this on a forum. "About Britain was only produced by non-"big 5" ITV companies (so all but YTV/Granada/Thames/LWT/Central).

About 'Britain' - inaccurate title. The relentlessly spinning animated map sequence includes all of the Republic of Ireland. Why leave in Republic of Ireland, but cut off the UK's other neighbours, Norway, Belgium, France, Netherlands Denmark etc etc? How curious.
@paulhugo2180 Жыл бұрын
Theres nothing curious, you just dont know geograthy or history. The Republic of Ireland is in the British Isles, the other countries are not, simple.

Many, many thanks for this. I'm a Portlander (by adoption rather than birth or upbringing), and while I'm only 32, I still think that if you showed this to the teenagers I go riding with it would seem as far off as the works of the GPO Film Unit seemed to me as a child. The details of life, as opposed to the physical landscape, don't apply now.

No sound.
@ADCTVCollection Жыл бұрын
Most of the sound is there only some music edits. The reason for the missing sound track in places was due to copyright issues with some of the music, so some had to be muted.

Great to see this. I had a copy a long time ago on Betamax. Lent it to a friend, and it got taped over. That's me on accordion at 17:53, on the right. Shame there are big holes in the soundtrack elsewhere. Or is it just me hearing that?

The trouble with lending stuff to friends, I've lost a few tapes like that. Nice to find old programmes especially if you are in them. The reason for the missing sound track in places was due to copyright issues with some of the music, so some had to be removed. The series has been released on DVD now, they sell the episodes on there own or the whole series. link below to the website www.countrywaysfilms.com/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?WD=june%20portland&PN=Country_Ways_Series_1%2ehtml#a10

That's good, out of interest does the DVD have any TVS logos at the start or end of the programme on the DVD?

@@ADCTVCollection Just watched it. No TVS logos, only Which Way Media.

That's a shame they have taken them off, but still good that they have come out on DVD. Thanks for letting me know.

Hi, great video, thank you. I'm looking for the isle of Man episode for a friend. . . any tips where to look...?
@ADCTVCollection4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, the only place i guess would be KZbin, but the chances of someone recording it would be quite rare, It would of been made by Border TV, so would be owned by ITV now, if they still have it.
