I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!! I really dislike articles that refer to pesticides or herbicides when the topic is about FERTILIZERS. Now, when I started growing phalaenopsis orchids, I didn't relize how much fertiliser they needed, resulting in small or pale structures:( THANKS FOR THE VIDEO! I REALLY NEEDED IT!😄😄😋

Thank you for the info. Can you recommend a type of fertilizer - liquid? granular? 7-7-7 or ? Also how to fertilize; Should it be given after watering? Should it be done in the spring when new growth emerges? In the fall or after blooms die back?

Hi Danny, I have a question (and possibly a subject for a video). How do you have your huge collection of orchids organized for the tasks of watering and fertilizing? It seems to me that you have your orchids situated mostly for their light requirements, and as you have pointed out many times, each variety has their own requisites for watering and fertilizing. In addition to their light needs, do you group like ones together that have the same watering schedule? And grouped together for their fertilizing schedule? I can't believe that you look at each plant every day to see if they need watering, and similarly going through your collection to fertilize them. Does it just work out, for example, that the ones that need the most light also have the same watering schedule? You must have your collection very well organized to easily maintain them since they seem to be very healthy plants.

hey Dani! what's your take on follier feeding, specifically regarding phals? this past fall I bought two species phals that seemed to be deficient in calcium/magnesium. I tried supplementing them with a Ca/Mg fertilizer but sadly they didn't make it. the packaging suggested the fertilizer could be fed through the leaves, but I didn't try it due to the fact my orchids were already very weak.

hey Dani... in relation to the heavy feeder orchids how many times do we fertilize them in a week? or month? does that mean a change of number of times we feed them? or the concentration of the fertilizer? I am a beginner trying to rescue my moms orchids... I am using Siam fertilizers. the grower booster variety since it is summer here in our country. hope to hear from you soon.

Great information, it reminds me I need to feed my dendrobium nobiles more. I have little buds on one and the other one seems like there is some swelling at the canes but no buds visible. It has a little new growth starting - about 1cm. Would you feed them now or wait a little longer? I have resumed watering again for a few weeks now. They are a bit late - I bought them in bloom during the summer so they kept growing quite late into the year.

PS: I LOOOOVE THE AQUARIUM!!!! It's so COLOURFUL, PRETTY AND FULL OF LIFE! I actually grow a few aquarium plants( mainly seedlings) which makes it easier to relate to certain problems when you refer to planted tanks.

LOVE your planted tank... too bad you no longer do those! I started mine, so I could garden in Winter. The water from the changes is great for orchids... low in minerals and high in nitrates... a form of nitrogen that orchids (and all plants) can use.🌱

Those articles about fertilizers were about the fertilizers that farmers use for the food we eat. Those fertilizers are mixed with chemicals that can cause disease in the people that eat the food. Very important article just doesn't have anything to do with houseplants., unless we eat the flowers.

Hi Dani! Could you help me out on fertilizers? :) I have bloom-booster only (3,5 - 5,5 - 6,5, and an other: 1,9 - 2,4 - 2,7) , but my orchids are not in bloom yet. (In my region, I can't buy growboosters specially for orchids.) But I have a fertilizer for indoor plants (7-3-5), can I use it as a grow-booster? Thanks!! I love your channel

I had to repot my catasetinae without slow release fertilizer, because all I could find here was compo (we know our opinion about the brand) and others, all containing inhibitors of nitrification and urease. Besides, they contained urea and ammonia. The only one that didn't had the inhibitors was one with bird guano and too much organic nitrogen for my taste. Since I use inorganic media as you do I didn't like that, so I guess I'll try to increase gradually fertilizer. I've seen people give them as much as 500 ppm. It is my first time going through catasetinae growing stages so I hope I can do well. PS: that aquarius looked very lush, I'm the fish loved the vegetation as well :)

really nice video and while i can totally see your logic and agree... how does the bigger structure = more heavy feeder work with Cymbidiums? I thought (might be wrong) they are sensitive to heavy feeding since it withers their leaf tips?
@NesuChambers
@NesuChambers 7 жыл бұрын
Whenever I asked advice in forums and whatnot I was told they like be heavy fed. I've seen people add peat and/or slow release fertilizer when they repot them. Maybe they want less concentration but a continuous supply. I think Rachel from Gardening at Douentza had great care videos for them if you are curious :)

Hi Dani (I hope I got that right) I am just getting into orchids starting a couple of months ago. I was exploring the great world of eBay when I stumbled upon a Dendrobium. So I bought a Dendrobium Kingianum and from what I can tell it is almost like all other Dendrobiums. Sadly though this is my first Dendrobium. Is there anything different about this orchid I should know? My main learning place is KZbin and sadly there is not many videos on this specific species so I'm almost clueless. I have done my research but most of it is not clear. Is there any way that you think you may be able to explain this orchid?!? 😊😅

I don't know of anyone who thinks "fertilizer is bad". Overuse of synthetic fertilizers though is a big problem, and consumers (rather than industry) are a big cause of the pollution caused by overuse of fertilizers. People think that more is always better, when it isn't. Algae blooms and fish death are some of the effects of fertilizer pollution.

+Gloriana Yeagley Hi, well there is a politicly correct version and a popular version :p food is the result of photosynthesis, the fertilizer provides the raw materials for the food to be cooked, among others :) but nothing wrong to with saying orchid food instead of fertilizer

Haha aww glad to help ☺️ but I think videos are better, I can show what I mean, I have 'evidence' in time and if anything gets dated, I can update it in an instant ;) all you need to do is type in search my name and the orchid topic you're interested in, I might have some videos on it 😉

+Julius Toledo Hi, well back in the day we called it El Natural.. Honestly 10 years ago the common vibe was that it was an excuse to not invest into quality.. Aaaand looked pretty awful to the aquascaping passionates.. Not sure where people stand these days, but personally I find it mediocre.. It's not something to wow, it's a name given to a low tech planted tank, given with probably tolerant plants. Mind you it's just an opinion, back in the day I was aspiring at full ADA setups, heavy CO2, minimal fish and heavy plant growth :p so.. Pretty costly things :p low tech setups are perfectly fine for a betta mini tank, get yourself bacopas, cryptocorynes (some) and some elodeas and presto a working planted tank ;)

They are nice, as I was saying suited for betta nanos with low maintenance plants.. betas also don't need oxygen in the water as they are labyrinth fish.. buuuuuuut.. I like these better :P showcase.aquatic-gardeners.org/

I maybe going off topic but would aquarium ceramic-rings work the same as hydroton balls as orchid media; vice versa hydroton in the aquarium? I noticed many filter material have similar properties as substrate used for plants such as activated-carbon.
@MissOrchidGirl
@MissOrchidGirl 7 жыл бұрын
Julius Toledo Hi, I never tested how fast they are to absorb but I think at least an experiment is worth it :) leca won't be as efficient as the ceramic rings in the aquarium, as it has considerable less surface for bacteria to settle. The rings have both inside and outside surfaces and I remember they were more porous than leca.
@--Paws--
@--Paws-- 7 жыл бұрын
I may take on the challenge, the ceramic-rings are more accessible to obtain than the leca. Thanks for your input.
