I watch your videos religiously and have learned a lot. anyway, it was funny to watch this video and see that you are using the SAME fertilizer I found semi-locally and have found it to work beautifully even using regular tap water. thank you so much for all your teachings and expertise. nice to see and hear you daily.

My understanding from my research is that Liquid fertilisers are always labelled as looking much weaker because they are already watered down. When you add water to a solid fertilisers the same thing happens. It's the ratio that is important.

Hi Dani! I started making my own fertilizer almost a year ago and I've had amazing results. I found a recipe on the internet and I just keep adding to the same formula. It smells completely awful but I put a small amount in my water every second to third watering that I do and as a result I get flower spikes about 5 to 6 months after dormancy the period. Most of the time. I also get healthy and wonderful roots! I have, however, unfortunately, killed a couple of my orchids due to over fertilizing but they were harsh and good lesson at the same time. I currently have 14 phalaenopsis orchids that I am absolutely obsessed with! Your videos are very inspiring to me. It all started with one that I received as a gift in July of 2015 and since then my collection has grown to 14. Only two of which were gifts. Please keep doing what you're doing! You are definitely one of my favorite channels that I subscribe to.

I have been growing orchids for many years and have always fertilized. I have been through a lot of phases with my fertilizing and tried a variety of products. I have a friend who doesn't believe in fertilizing. She sees it as "cheating." I think she told me that she believes that fertilizing can increase the color of your blooms, but is not necessary for the health of your orchid. She also thinks it can hurt roots which I agree is sometimes true. I have to admit, her orchids do great without fertilizer, and I don't notice a difference in bloom color. In fact she tells me that quite a few people in her orchid society don't fertilize. I am not positive how long she has been growing orchids, but I know she told me she has had quite a few of her orchids for more than 10 years. So I don't know what to make of that. It has me wondering how necessary fertilizing is. She has some amazing orchids that haven't seen fertilizer in at least 10 years. I may try an experiment with two orchids of same genus & species - one with fertilizer and one without. Of course this experiment will take years, and would not allow me to draw any definitive conclusions. Still may try it to see if it makes any difference. I try not to be so absolutely sure I am right and know more than everyone else on topics like this. I think there are more than one legitimate opinions.

Well you know how it is, everyone is entitled to have an opinion and believe in whatever they wish to believe, however contradictory that may be and you will just have to research and see if something is possible, how and why ;) a good place to start is the biology class (not kidding, I am actually recapping my biology studies, such great things to know in life :D)
@johnbenedictorchids52078 жыл бұрын
Does your friend maintain her orchids outdoors..? My only reason for asking is because the majority of growers I know here in South Florida; and who grow outdoors, have never used fertilizer. I purchased six Cattleyas from a grower in 2010 who told me they were never fertilized, and I decided to continue that practice with those six plants while maintaining them in the same shadehouse with everything else I fertilize and they do just as well. I attend many orchid sales and I'm out in the field quite often observing as much as I can and I know for a fact that most of what I see is not fertilized... and what I see and have been told at shows by both collectors and growers is exactly what you have mentioned... Though I will not take a chance and discontinue fertilizing at this stage of the game, nor do I suggest anyone do... I will mention that I use a Better-Gro prodict; 20-14-13, which is not a quality fertilizer, in my opinion, though my orchids have been doing exceptionally well with it since day-1 (2005).
@maryannlewis74518 жыл бұрын
John Benedict - No, she doesn't live in South Florida, she lives in Washington DC so she grows her orchids indoors. I sent her an email and told her about the discussion. She found it all very amusing, but doesn't seem to want to join in the conversation. I am certainly not suggesting anyone change their fertilizing habits. I am a long time fertilizer myself. I just wanted to point out to MOG that there are different views on this topic.
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
As I was saying in the video, there are a ton of views on the subject, making it quite sensitive... some are more pertinent than others, thus I think one should take all knowledge into account and form their own opinion.. I was pointing to biology as it explains how plants work in nature and WHY they work ;) thus we can determine if orchids work in the same way or not (pointing at how plants feed in nature, if they need any food to grow or they just grow through some sort of miracles.. sorry that might sound a bit harsh but.. it's true :P and like John says.. if grown outside things are very different, plants get 'fertilized' by nature, not you). With this information you will at least have an informed decision, not one based on : x person says this than it must be true and I include myself in this category as well, just because I say it doesn't make it true, you need to investigate if what I say, or anyone says is true, or I am just not seeing some things right.

Hi Dani and thank you for the great videos! We have a new orchid fertilizer product here in Finland made by a company called Biolan, which was developed based on the research behind MSU. Our local orchid association has recommended it. I just started my path with orchids, so unable yet to say how it works. Atleast dosages of nutrients looks good. They have, I believe, an online shop too.

Can I ask a fertilizer question here? I have a TDS meter. I typically use rain water to water my orchids. My tap water reads over 300 ppm of total dissolved solids. My rain water typically reads between 35 and 50 ppm. So my question is, the fertilizer I got from repot me website states 125 ppm during the winter. Do I take into account the 35-50 ppm that already exists in the water so, therefore, reduce the fertilizer? 125 ppm needed so 125- 35 = 90 ppm. Is that how you are supposed to fertilize? Or do you just add the 125 ppm to the 35 and it would end up being 160 ppm?

Another excellent video on plant physiology, plant ecology and basic general chemistry Miss Orchid Professor Dani. The Public is often swayed by advertising and the lose or deceptive use in the meaning of certain words. Organic and natural are perfect examples. The scientific meaning for the term organic is any compound in which carbon atoms and hydrogen atoms are chemically bonded. The term natural has NO SCIENTIFIC meaning when it comes to nutrition. The term "natural" is often used by advertisers as a synonym for "organic" when they should mean it is not artificially made or not altered or not processed. Water and ammonia are inorganic but it can be both artificially made or it can be made within an organism( aka "natural"). Many synthetic materials are organic but are all artificially made. Distilled water is both inorganic and artificially made. Also, once you cook a food, it is altered and therefore by definition not natural. Frying an egg will show very clearly how cooking can alter a food. A cooked egg is not found in nature. Therefore a cooked egg is not a natural food. It is unnatural. But people do eat unnatural foods. From what I have said, I hope people become more aware of the meaning of these terms and others that manufacturers and advertisers use to sell their products. Remember "New and improved" does not necessarily beat "Tried and true".

:)) you know sometimes I understand why the fears or extremes.. what I don't understand is why we make so many debates when we have the proof and the knowledge, at least for the basics. I mean, sure we live in a world where freedom of thought is luckily allowed, unlike some years ago. But I just think sometimes we take it into useless extremes. Yes you should think things for yourself, but doubting everything we worked so many hundreds of years to discover is just.. ow well :P it doesn't matter, let's just say I am very glad some people who completely oppose science as a whole are not public airline pilots :)))))

About that calculator, I'm not sure. For Schwerter fertilizer and 150 ppm N it said I had to dose 0.88 mL per liter of water. I did that prediluting a bit the fertilizer so I would need more and thus having less errors (I'm glad I studied biochemistry xD), and with distilled water the readings were like 50 ppm or so. I don't have the best TDS but I think it should give me a very good idea. So what I did was dosage bit by bit until I reached about 170 ppm and then lowered the pH a bit with drops of lemon juice to make it around 6. I used that alone, no other water, and I want to see how it goes. Since the tap water here seems to be kinda burning my roots and some mineral water brands are cheaper than distilled, I wanna look for a very weak one, test it with the TDS and check the label for mineral content and % and see how it goes. My fear with fertilizer is always salt build up, like I feel I'm doing something wrong if I don't use regular water. Is seramis prone to salt build up as far as you know? And final quesiton, I have a mounted (and very root bounded) B. Little Stars and a Renanthera. I let the renanthera sit on the solution I made so it could suck as much as it wanted, but for the brassavola I don't really know how to go about it as I can't soak the mount. PS: My renanthera monachica is spiking and I'm hella excited about it. I just recently got it and I know it's not that easy to make it bloom, in fact I don't see any signs of previous bloomings on the plant. To be honest I pampered it a lot, looking for the sunniest spots on the room and changing it from one place to another so it could have the maximum light possible .

Good video Dani, thanks. Lots of great info as usual. Just one comment - as you know, tap water is not the same everywhere - where I am it has very low TDS and I need to add calcium and magnesium when I water to keep my orchids happy. I suspect this is an anomaly, but so may people are thinking they need RO water or the like, but that is not always the case. The only orchid I don't water with tap water is my Disa, for that I collect rain water. So I think your fertilizer would be perfect for me!

It seems as if the velamen on the roots is capable of absorbing nitrogen from both the air (which is 78% nitrogen, afterall) and rainwater, when orchids are growing in their natural habitat. Which may explain the habit of air roots, despite an abundance of roots in the pot. Good video, much to be learned.
@MissOrchidGirl8 жыл бұрын
Hi Laurie, plants do not take nitrogen from the air, there needs to be a chemical process to transform it into something plants can take. Some plants use other organisms to do this job for them, more about it here www.quora.com/How-do-plants-get-their-Nitrogen Rain water doesn't really contain anything, it is very low in minerals, but it sure is a nice 'vehicle' to transport nutrients and make them available for plants :)
@laurieparis22038 жыл бұрын
MissOrchidGirl, actually rainwater does contain a small amount of nitrogen, which is one reason why rain water is better for your plants than distilled. As it falls, it also picks up a bit of carbon dioxide, changing the neutral ph to slightly acidic, and can contain a bit of sodium. Unfortunately sometimes pollution also comes with Rain water, as does dust. I do know about the nitrogen fixing relationship symbiotic relationship between bacteria and legumes. Will do some more reading about velamen and it I find anything interesting will get back with you.

@tanyastelly62436 жыл бұрын
Basically, it's because you have no control on how much fertilizer the medium has absorbed. Fertilizers/salts, when too concentrated, can burn the roots. Even with "weakly weekly" you need to flush out the medium regularly to allow the salts, etc. to escape. You can do that by soaking for an hour or so then drain, or simply let non-fertilized water run over the medium for several minutes. Most instructions that have you fertilizing more often during growing seasons will not have you fertilizing every watering. Usually I see instructions that say "water weekly, fertilize twice per month in summer and water every other week and fertilize once per month in winter." Now, that's just an example and not instructions for every orchid under the sun. But you get the idea.

Im currently using a rather weak fertilizer, NPK=2:1:1, but I've bought a new fertilizer with an NPK of 4+2+6,6, hope it'll work better than my current feed. I wonder, do the colour of the fertilizer say anything about the content (e.g maybe more iron or manganese)? My current fertilizer is dark yellow, whereas the new fertilizer is green. Another rainmix experiment would be neat, if you have the patience and funds for it. :)
@laurieparis22038 жыл бұрын
Calle Nilsson, the color can be from the form the nutrients are in. For example, copper sulfate is blue. Some brands use Dyes, like one I used years ago for my african violets that was lavender. These Dyes are a marketing tool and don't color your plant or your flower. Hard to say which it is in your fertlizers.
@09csr8 жыл бұрын
Laurie Paris Figures, I can sadly not see the trace mineral content in the new fertilizer (which I find a bit concerning), so I we cant see if its higher content of some nutrients. Im leaning towards it being a dye, green fertilizers are quite common. That lavender one sounds really pretty though, dye or not.

What about osmocote or slow releasing fertilizer
@edj27458 жыл бұрын
Slow release fertilizer is used by many professional gardeners and orchid hobbyist. Osmocote is not a slow or timed release fertilizer, it is a controlled release fertilizer. The release rate is controlled by soil temperature. What happens with controlled release ferts is that water passes into the prill and pressure builds inside the prill (governed by temperature). This pressure forces the semi soluble nutrients out of the prill. That's why they release faster in warm soil and slower in cooler soil. The warmer the salt semi solution inside the prill the more soluble it becomes and the easier it passes through the prill. Dynamite 13-13-13 is an excellent slow release fertilizer low in phosphate & no urea. It used to be sold just to professional growers under the name Nutricote. The fertilizer release is controlled by moisture in the medium and keeps working for up to 9 months and provides both macro & micro nutrients. They make one for orchids, but the 13-13-13 was a favorite. I use the Dynamite 13-13-13 for my orchids with seaweed fertilizer every 3 weeks. With the combination of both, the orchids put out more and thicker roots, more leaves, and blooms.

Hey Dani, i'm glad you're having success with the MSU fertilizer. Did you find any difference between the First Rays and the repotmenow? Thanks for sharing 😉

Hi J :D I did not open the second tub of MSU yet, so I cannot say if there is any difference yet, but visually they look identical at least :) I think the provider is the same though, just different packaging perhaps?

Teaser! I was honestly surprised when you said in older videos that you didn't like phalaeonopsis. I was thinking what's wrong with you?!

well.. I don't like them for the main part :)) the complex hybrids I mean, but since I have space I can tolerate a few of the more fancy ones :P
