The fictional industrial town of Milton was based on Manchester, where Gaskell lived with her family. It was published in weekly installments in Household Words, the magazine edited by Charles Dickens. The novel was originally to be titled Margaret Hale, but was changed at the suggestion of Dickens to a title that emphasizes the difference between the north and the south which was a subject commonly discussed at the time.

You give a good and detailed ac of the book.. I am not happy with the ending.. Abrupt somewhat.. I have the book.. I feel that Margaret and Elisabeth in pride and prejudice are blessed in the sense that their men do love them dearly.. Well, the men could have dumped them and I was amazed at the way John reacted with the declaration that he will continue to love Margaret despite the rejection. RA is an excellent actor and he has said role of a lifetime..Not an easy role and he bothered to read the book... Charming and honest guy as he believes in doing a good job. . All the best to his career..
