Blue is my favorite color, and I love the clean scales, so I fell in love with asagi when I first started getting interested in koi. I intend to have a few when I get a pond someday.

Thank you for devoting a video to one of my favourite varieties, the Asagi! Those reticulated net patterns on Asagi are really stunning. My favourite varieties are Shiro Utsuri (and to a lesser degree Hi and especially Ki Utsuri), Asagi, Sanke and Dragon koi...As always, thank you for sharing your in depth knowledge of these swimming jewels...

Also, could you address why there is a saying amongst koi fanciers that "it always comes back to Kohaku". I'm guessing its because of the Kohaku being the first ornamental variety and also because of its Zen-like simplicity and classically minimalist elegance...

Hi there, thank you for your reply! Great to hear you are so enthusiastic about Asagi. I can image why of course. I think I have created video's of all of your favorite Koi by now 😀. Thank you for your compliment. See you in the next video and take care!

I think the more serious the hobbyist becomes, the more likely it is he will go with Gosanke (Kohaku, Sanke, Showa (and even Shiro Utsuri some suggest)). Most probably indeed because of the classic, simplicity and elegance these varieties have to offer.

Another very informative and interesting video, and particularly pleasing as I brought 2 small Asagis last year and they fit your criteria perfectly. They have almost double there size in the 10 months I’ve had them. One of my favourite varieties. Stay safe and well.

@@Aboutkoi My pleasure Sir. I agree with you. I have a plan. I will get them in March as that is when Spring begins here in the U.K., and put them in the Pond my Father has in his Backyard, so that I can grow them and hopefully breed them, so when I finally buy a House I will build a Pond and move them into it. 😊

Thank you so much for all your videos. I am learning so much and watch them over and over. Asagi is one of my favourites, we have 1 tosai asagi bought earlier this year and it is one of my favourites. It is very blue on top still so we are waiting to see how it develops. But it has a very clean head. Is kuchibeni acceptable on asagi? Thank you again! You guys are awesome!

One suggestion, from someone who studied this variety for over fifty years, raising fingerlings.......I learned to stay away from color food , because as the fish developed , red would over run over the top of the lateral line into the top blue scales at the tail section of the koi. Just fyi
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
Hi there. That's a great suggestion also for fellow hobbyists. Thank you for sharing. Color food can be a good tool, but it indeed is not working out very properly for all varieties. Do you know which specific ingrediënt caused this?

Hi, wanna ask why some young (30cm) asagi head is yellow color? Will it turn to white color when it grow bigger?. When we select, we should select white color instead of yellow color? Thanks
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 3 жыл бұрын
Many young fish indeed have that yellowish looking head. For many of them it will disappear when they grow a bit larger. Also when they are caught out of the mudpond usually they are more yellowish looking. It usually starts to get whiter already just a few days after the harvest. For Koi that are one year old, it is acceptable to have a light yellow head. That will usually become better. For older asagi, you should always go for a head as white as possible

Hey i love your videos and i have a one question to you, why is my 2 inch gin-rin asagi and 3 inch why are they don't have a red color in under? Is that narutal? Hope u will notice me
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there, thank you for your comment. Some asagi do not have red or orange colour on their belly and below the lateral line. It might be that it will never appear as well. That is natural indeed, but unfortunately as well!
@Dwinswimhim
@Dwinswimhim 3 жыл бұрын
@@Aboutkoi will there be a red pattern someday?
@clarencemagtoto2778
@clarencemagtoto2778 2 жыл бұрын
@@Dwinswimhim it depends on the genetics of the lineage. In my experience, having little orange coloration is generally for the best (those specimens tend to remain perfect for longer). For tosai asagi as small as yours, only the motokuro (the color pattern located at the pectoral fin joint) should be orange (fully orange pectoral fins would be ideal). Also, avoid feeding color enhancers when they are smaller than 35cm if you don't want the orange color to emerge on the blue netting pattern and turn it into grey.
@clarencemagtoto2778
@clarencemagtoto2778 4 жыл бұрын
In my experience, for plain-scaled asagi, the best producers are Hosokai, Oya, Nagoshi, Wada, and Masaki koi farms. For ginrin asagi, the best breeders are Iwashita and Yamaju koi farms. For vibrant, light to medium blue coloration reminiscent of cobalt blue, keep them in soft water (which I am fortunate to have at home although beware that soft water also tends to make the orange closer to yellow)....
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
That are some great additions! Hosokai, Oya, Wada are indeed great breeders for Asagi. I have the same experience with indeed lower TDS levels which will help to keep the back of asagi lighter. It will also be less likely that shimi's will appear the softer the water is. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Everyone can learn from that. 😀
@clarencemagtoto2778
@clarencemagtoto2778 4 жыл бұрын
@@Aboutkoi I also forgot, for ginrin asagi, you can actually start with dark blue tosai as the prism scales would counterbalance the color as they grow. Again, just keep them in soft water if the desired final color is light to medium blue. Some of the plain-scale asagi breeders I mentioned above also occasionally produce ginrin asagi but so far the best I have had came from Iwashita (considering that he's the first one to develop the breed). I don't know if you already had experience with ginrin asagi but they seem to be more prone to being overrun by orange than plain-scale asagi do.....
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
That is some valueable information. I personally do not have a lot of experience with ginrin asagi, i've seen several tosai/nisai, but no experience in growing these up. Myself I would most probably stick to using the same criteria as for plain asagi. As you are saying, overrun by orange: do you mean single scales on or just above the lateral line that have orange in them? Which makes the transition of orange on the sides look less like a straight solid line?
@clarencemagtoto2778
@clarencemagtoto2778 4 жыл бұрын
@@Aboutkoi I mean the orange going above the lateral line and intruding into the blue netting pattern (regardless of whether single scales or patches). For ginrin asagi, all the criteria required for plain-scaled asagi are the same; what I mean in my earlier response is that you can afford to have a darker blue tosai because all that light refracted by the prism scales will lighten the blue color a lot. About Oya's narumi asagis, regularly feeding them with silkworm-rich diets seem to make them exhibit bright cobalt blue coloration, but the same feeding regimen did not produce the same results for asagi from other producers.
@Aboutkoi
@Aboutkoi 4 жыл бұрын
In that case I did understand you correctly, thank you for your clarification. I fully agree with you to take into consideration that ginrin asagi often seem to be lighter coloured on their back due to the sheen on the scales. Personally I would most probably still go with the lighter coloured blue on them as well, what would you do? It seems like you truly tried to grow out Asagi of different breeders in good test setups. How did you organize this in order to see the real difference in development when feeding different types of food for example? Did you make use of separated growout tanks?

It depends on what type of Asagi you are search for. I'm now working on a video that contains a 'Narumi' Asagi. For narumi Asagi, they have a deep dark indigo in the center of the scale, which is around that area surrounded by paler blue. Personally I do prefer the 'blueish' Asagi more
