I'm a new amputee BK LL, go for my first Amputee physio today, so I subbed in support of you, Spider bite in Thailand, set up Neratitis in my foot and ended up losing my leg,

I love your prosthetist, he really is pushing for you to get the best fit and prosthetic control, if you can try to maintain as much muscle strength within your residual so he’s able to go subischal with vacuum so you will use your muscles more which will help save your hip and back from the extra strain you can get with ischal seat sockets. You will find you don’t hit your bone of the inside of the socket anymore and you need less rotation adapters at the knee. You will find sitting more comfortable(especially when driving) and you will have much better range of motion as the socket won’t be digging into your hip. One of the best exercises I do when I’m sat on the sofa is to push my residual into the seat as hard as I can and hold it for ten (3 sets of 15) it really helps power that heal strike. I’m an Ak and wear sub ischial suction infinite socket I can feel and control my prosthetic better and it has helped me stop doing the amputee dip when I’m walking. It’s not easy rebuilding the muscles but it’s definitely worth it long term. Sending the very best wishes he can get you set up and your recovery from surgery keeps going so brilliantly 🤗🦿🤗

Thanks for sharing, I'm a BKA-L, and just had a full knee replacement to the right side. Whole new set of pain, but at least the BKA side finally fits after getting a huge cutout for my tibia. Sounds like your density changes about as fast as mine does, to where if I'm not in my socket for a brief period, I needed to sock up a couple of layers even after 5 minutes. I'm lucky in that I'm a BKA, but I've been out and did not bring enough socks with me, and watched my prosthetic fly off, causing me to almost fall, and that frustrates the crap out of me. I was lucky my second prosthetic fits better, and my stump can fully support my weight. Still it was touch a go with a lot of delays before getting my knee, and I kept banging my right leg up, which created wounds and the risk became too high to perform the surgery, thereby I wouldn't have enough strength to support myself, and have to live out the rest of my life in a wheelchair. The knee replacement hurt way more than the amputation, so I wasn't prepared, nor did I handle the pain of the knee replacement very well. Still have my goal of reaching the top of Mt. Whitney in a couple of years. Thanks again

How do you like a vacuum for an above knee? I have one for a bka (willow wood one) and am like you going into an aka revision in May (so nervous).

Vacuum really is the best system for limb health but it isn't without it's issues! When your limb starts to shrink and lose volume, your socket tends to lose vacuum and then it will not stay on without some additional suspension method like a belt. When it works, it works great and gives you a lot of control over your limb. When it doesn't work it is frustrating. But that is the same for any suspension system. It's good to have a belt as a backup method of suspension. All methods have their downsides. Pin lock for example has issues where when you lose volume and needs to add socks you also lose control over the prosthesis and it feels heavier because the suspension is all from the pin.
