Episode 56
A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobolonia is one of the most unique games for the NES - Instead of relying on your running and jumping skills like in Super Mario Bros, instead you'll use the titular Blob which can transform into 14 different tools! Ladders, trampolines, keys, and car jacks - the Blob can do it all!
So how did this crazy game get made? In today's episode we'll find out, then we'll dive deep into the gameplay where we'll learn:
* Where to find EVERY HIDDEN TREASURE!
* How to use ALL 14 of the BLOB'S TRANSFORMATIONS!
* Where to find ALL of the hidden PEPPERMINT TREATS - They'll get you EXTRA LIVES!
* SECRET USES for the Blob's powers!
* Multiple strategies for passing the deadly CHERRY BOMBS!
* How to destroy the CHOCLATE CAULDRON and MARSHMALLOW MACHINES!
* Turn the Blob into a WALL - the SECRET TRANSFORMATION cut from the game!
* A TRICK that will quickly CLEAR THE FINAL AREA OF ENEMIES!
* Multiple strategies for getting through BLOBOLONIA and defeating the EVIL EMPEROR!
* A SECRET ROUTE to finish the game in LESS THAN FIVE MINUTES... AND MORE!
Thanks for watching!

HAHA God I love being dragged back to the 80's by your videos. My mom put this game in my Easter basket one year. She said she bought it because "the box looked so cute!". 9 year old me internally groaned because even then I knew that the box art was a TERRIBLE way to judge games. But I gave it a chance and it was great! I spent the whole day eating nothing but two dozen colored eggs and a chocolate rabbit while playing this game on the family room TV.

Yep but we sure didn't have KZbin or the internet to get an idea of whether a game was good or not. All we had was word of mouth, game magazines, or just roll the dice and buy a game based on the cover art or the description and pictures on the back of the box.
@kraylthunderhorn7891

@@crimsontide1980 For sure. I always went by the actual game play pictures on the back of the box. I remember thinking how awful the Megaman box art was compared to the game. But my mom had an oddly good instinct for finding great games somehow. She bought me "Magic of Scheherazade" and I was like *GROAN* And it turned out to be one of the greatest games EVER!

This was one of my family's first NES games, and we spent weeks taking notes and practicing avoiding all the death traps. It was wild, looking back, at just how much trial and error is involved if you go in without a map. You put the hole in the wrong place in the subway and you just die until you figure out where the right place is. We mostly used to have fun playing around and experimenting with tricks like how the boy can temporarily run in mid-air if you skid to a stop over a ledge.

The thing is, that level of open ended ness felt like wxillerating freedom. Not bad design. There is a balance, but games have gone too far in the opposite direction. Games don’t feel exciting anymore because they don’t feel “alive”.

When I was a kid I thought the cave and treasure collecting was the entire game. Needless to say I couldn't even do that. I did stumble upon Blob land area but could never get past the cherry bombs. I thought the peppermint treats were just decorative accents in a bland background. Haha.

Too obtuse now and too obtuse back then lol. Only difference is we were just happy to have things called videogames and the NES was where it was at. Trial and error artificially extended what would be VERY short game experiences as well. I remember renting this game and Simon's Quest all the time, and I don't recall making much progress in either, nor do I recall getting terribly frustrated. Not sure I had any goal other than to just play and enjoy. A few games I owned as a kid I, of course, wanted to beat them so I had a goal of completion. Own one or two games a year and you eventually became an expert at them.

I'm glad I subscribed, cause every Saturday I get to relive some of my best memories growing up. You clearly live the NES for it's nostalgia when you were a kid, and if bet you're approximately 40 or so years old, like me. This was a significant part of how we spent our time as kids, and the memories it helped make, will last with us forever. The different worlds we were immersed in, and the satisfaction of conquering something, will always be memories at the forefront of our minds. Thanks for being a part of our collective history. Kindred spirit.

The historic overview at the top of each of these episodes is great. I think I've learned a little something new in each episode, but the bit about Imagineering going on to make Bart vs. the Space Mutants kinda blew my mind, lol. The drifty controls, the weird hitboxes, the trial and error puzzles, it all makes sense now! The young me raged at both games so hard - this OST seriously still triggers me! - and the current (old) me is somehow satisfied to know about this connection. XD Thanks for another video, and for all the memories - so many in the comments section each vid!

From the strange room, the whole limerick is: A boy hero heard a kid sob. (her tree cat got stuck on the job.) A ladder he tried. 'Oh thank you!' she cried. "Replied he, 'Just doing my blob'". Which can be accessed in the game code directly, the glitch only shows part of it. I think the developers were going to have a tutorial section with accompanying poems to teach the players about the moves, but it was scrapped before production. The whole game feels unfinished and weird because of how rushed it was.

One of my favorite things about this game is that if you are running and turn around when you're about to go off of a ledge, you'll float in midair for a second. I had a lot of fun breaking this game and exposing the hidden Easter Eggs back in the 90s. Initially I exploited the Punch jellybean in the underground earth areas to wrap around from the rightmost screens to the leftmost to beat the game easily in under 20 minutes. Others would later evolve these tactics into the even shorter route we know today.
