Great vid as usual. Some excellent tips. I told u I was struggling with the inferno hence why I chose to skip it but your hanging low strat makes for a much easier time. Great tip. The steelbeaks I couldn't work out a timing for they are a nightmare tho I first one is an excellent place to farm an extra life as u get 5000 points each time and he infinitely respawns, you just stay behind him. If u die u get the 1up anyway

Thanks, man! I didn't think the Inferno was too bad, but the second half of the Snakes is a nightmare. That's the more compelling reason to use the warp, IMO. Cool tip about the Steelbeaks! Those guys don't look dangerous, but will totally wreck your day.

I think I have PTSD from playing Battletoads back in the early 90's. Such a brutal game. Watching this play-through though I realize just how impressive this game is from a technical stand point. The graphics are phenomenal and the gameplay itself (as brutal as it is) has tons of variety and creative ideas. The music rocks too. Truly one of the greatest games of the 8-bit era.

Battletoads isn't just a game that you can learn about and then beat. It legitimately takes a great deal of concentration and fantastic hand-eye coordination. Great game, but I was lousy at it growing up. After beating the bikes, I remember thinking the game wouldn't get any tougher--and it definitely did.

There is a shortcut in the 4th snake pit room you missed. It skips the final hardest part! When you’re on the 4th snake (yellow and red) ride it to the top of the screen. Wait until near the end of the snake and then jump way over to the right. It takes you right to the exit!

I have just stumbled upon this channel of yours and started going through your videos and I have to say that this content is just amazing. Like, it is right up my alley. It reminds me a bit of those old "How to Beat" type of VHS tapes from the 80/90s but these are way more thorough and actually take you through the whole thing while revealing all kinds of cool trivia along the way. It's kinda surreal. Had these videos been released back when I was a kid, I can tell it's the kind of stuff I would have watched on repeat, even if I had never played the games in question. This will definitely be one of the channels I'll keep a closer look at in the future. As for Battletoads, I didn't own it myself back in the day but I did have a friend who had it and we would sometimes play it but like you said in your video, like many other kids we could never get past the Turbo Tunnel part. It's crazy to think that developers back then would purposely create so many cool levels and technically impressive gimmick, only to make the early game so cruelly hard that many players would be lucky to even see half of it. One funny piece of trivia I recently learned of was that just before you kick enemies with your big boot, the game will pause for a second. I always thought that was just solely for dramatic effect but it is in fact the game loading a sound sample to play for the kick. Fantastic video, mate. And gosh darn impressive to see deathless run with a maxed-out score to boot. Maybe one day I'll be able to at least complete it too. One can dream xD Can't wait to see what game you'll be tackling next. If I may suggest a really great, yet underappreciated game, I would pick Ufouria: The Saga from Sunsoft. It's a really cool Metroidvania kinda game. I recently worked on a hack for it, so I've had to go through it a couple of times as a result and it's definitely the kind of game where a guide could be handy on your first go. Either that or Bionic Commando :)
@UCanBeatVideoGames3 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot, Captain N! I really appreciate all of the kind words. Cool fact about the game loading the sound sample - I didn't know that! I really like Uforia, I played through for the first time last year. I'll definitely put it on my list. And I'll let you in on a secret. Bionic Commando is the next video.
@captainnintendo3 жыл бұрын
@@UCanBeatVideoGames That's awesome! Bionic Commando is another game where I recently worked on a large translation hack and uncovered a lot of cool stuff in the code. The most interesting thing about the game is probably the differences between the US and Japanese versions. And I'm not just referring the censoring of the Nazi symbols and story. There are in fact a bunch of gameplay and secret-based changes. Like a super-secret hidden room that'll grant you the ability to activate a shield at any time (if I remember correctly) However, that whole room was removed from the western version. There was also a hostage you could interrogate and in the Japanese version, if you attacked him 100 times with your bionic arm, he would give you all the items in the game early on. This was also removed. There are a whole bunch of little subtle changes like these. In one of the early neutral areas in the game, you can also swing under some barriers blocking you with a well executed swing by grabbing the ground under them and swing right under. It'll give you a special message in the Japanese version from the soldier on the other side. Not so in the western version, although, you can still perform the swing. I believe the Japanese version was also more picky about you having to use specific weapons to destroy the various barriers in the game, where the US version will let you use a bigger range in most cases. But I digress and apologize for this wall of random localization trivia. I will look forward to seeing the upcoming video :)
@UCanBeatVideoGames3 жыл бұрын
I definitely picked up the Japanese version after reading a bit about the differences. I understand why they got rid of all the Swastikas, but I was very surprised at all the changes to the game itself. I have no idea why they made some of these changes - it seems like they put a lot of effort into changing stuff. It's fascinating.

A couple notes not mentioned. 10:12 When collecting 1UPS, look for the 1up shadow before jumping. Jump and place your shadow over the 1UP shadow to make sure you get it. Same for anything using a sudo 3D world such as the enemies, floating walls or ramps. At 36:25 those fans can be destroyed with the stick if you still have it. The yellow gassers can be busted too. It gives you a nice breather where you don't need to worry about anything. 46:03 When racing the giblet, you can hit him to turn him around. When the hole is at the side, I like to headbutt the giblet over the hole where he will hit the wall, turn around and land on the platform again forcing him to run all the way back and forth again as you fall down the hole. Run to the next hole and repeat. As long as you keep doing it, it will keep the giblet with you instead of it getting ahead.
@ViceCommando3 жыл бұрын
This was exactly what I was looking for. One extra thing I might add, is that you can make small skip in level 4. When you go under the walls the shell is pounding up, the game spawns the next set ahead of you, despawning the ones you just passed. Backtracking and with a careful jump down in the pit where the exit is, you can get to exit the level sooner. Prevents you getting squashed in the end by another set of walls and a spiky shell in a tricky spot.

This is by FAR the hardest game I have ever played. I am 45 years old and when I rented this as a kid I only got past the turbo tunnel level only 2 or 3 times. This game takes patience, practice, memorization, and determination. Even with your video it is going to be difficult for people to implement. You really have to analyze what's going on and take notes on how the levels are structured and the "mechanics" and "limitations" of the game design.The plane level still give me nightmares. I beat this game multiple times as a kid both with and without warping. This is what happens when you are poor and have more time than money. It took me forever to get past chapter 11 cause I couldn’t figure out how to gain separation on the curves. I never did figure it out. I played it so much I eventually did it by just instinct with timing when to turn. For chapter 8 you can safely destroy all those stupid gassers with stick or ram attack. Makes it way easier climbing up the shaft. Great video on truly one of the hardest NES games ever made. I bought it for the colorful cover and thought I was going to get a TMNT arcade beat em up clone except with hilarious toads. Just keep pausing for every turn and you'll be able to reach the end with ease. Just be sure to pause at the exact moment your toad is making the turn

Excellent and Nostalgic video for me. Long ago in the 90's, I discovered how to take advantage in Clinger-Winger if you pause exactly when your toad is in the middle of the turn. With the game paused, you can arrange D-Pad to the correct direction in the way your device has to go. Do this and so you can acumulate space between the Buzz Ball and your toad. On stage 8 and 10 you can smash those gas blowers with your stick or even with the horn attack. On the snakes, in the last room, you can performate a jump directly from the yellow and pink snake in way to get the outdoor. You probably will die falling upon the spikes but if you jump enough to the right your body will be pushed directly into the exit hole and you will start on the next level. I think beating Battletoads was the most significant achievment of my life after being dad. Greetings from Brazil.

On Clinger-Winger, don't be afraid to use a controller with a slow motion feature (rapid pause/unpause), or if you're using a regular controller, pause RIGHT as you hit a corner, hit the button for the direction you're about to turn into, unpause, and you'll go that much faster.

A few tricks I learned from my playthrough, or other let's plays. - Karnath's Lair room 4. Ride the yellow/pink snake up, then jump across the 3 spike balls to the exit (or hit the spikes, lose a life but clear the stage if you touch the exit while dead). Or, stay at the top, jump across at the last moment (the head of the snake will be up on the other side, and you can walk to the exit). - Keep spamming Pause to give yourself more reaction time. It's the only way I could beat Volkmire and Clinger Winger..... :( - Intruder Excluder. The stick can destroy the gassers and the fans. - Terra Tubes. Normally for the underwater wheels, you're supposed to hover over spikes while a wheel passes over you. Keep spamming attack to stay in place. - Rat Race, 3rd race. When the rat tries to overtake you on the straight section, push attack to headbutt him forward. Hopefully he'll bounce off the wall and turn around. Positioning is key (knocking him down the hole instead would be catastrophic). With this strat, you don't have to be nearly perfect.

Yeah the Rat falls directly onto the bomb after the first one in the PAL one so you cant exploit the trick. Personally I quite like the level now I have it memorized tho one extra tip I think is slightly quicker is to jump forward when your on the white moving girders ie the ones with the Holes in that move left to right. Since your slower when on those because of their movement, you gain a few milliseconds by jumping. I think they may have fixed Sergeant Slaughter too cos that ram stun lock thing doesnt work. At least didnt for me. He always jumps up and squashes you if you ram him the first time. Also great work with the Clinger boss, you completely make him a bitch. I tried to utilise that pick strat but I always screwed it up and found a ram and run approach the safest for me.

Great tips...it's been 30 years since I played this for the last time. Never got past the rat race. This video definitively inspired me to try again

Remember epic battles with my dudes in 2p mode, it was a lot of fun. Not to brag, I practiced so many times the Turbo Tunnel that I could pass it with eyes closed due to the music actually timed with each jump or move. But clinger-despair... even on an emulator with save state is so damn IMPOSSIBLE. Did manage to beat the game back in my NES. Big fan of your channel!

I love these walkthroughs man. You're one of my favorite channels now - up there with Summoning Salt. Looks like I've got hours of content to enjoy!

I never saw the snakes AFTER the one at 29:00 mins because you can jump to the exit pretty easily from there via the red/yellow snake when it's high near those spikes. I guess that part may be a lot easier than you showed us. I beat the game several times in my childhood and still learned new things by watching your video. Cheers & thanks!

Beautiful vid, I've gotten to turbo tunnel, then skipped to the end and beat her, this game is the brutalest!
@fordguy87923 жыл бұрын
Another one I could never beat, usually because my friends and I would end up beating on each other for shits and giggles instead of legit trying to beat it! God, that descent level had us "accidentally" killing each other for hours on end! I have really fond memories of this, even if I only ever saw past the speeder bike level once!

Watching this video takes me back. Despite the fact I only ever got past level 3 once I still loved the game and thought it was the coolest game on the NES, cant count how many times I rented it from the video store.

love this game. bought it off my friend in middle school for $10. just some additional tips: Wookie Hole: the grey electrodes at the end can be easily avoided by moving to the center of the bottom of the screen and not moving, rather than swinging back and forth and risking damage Surf City: if you run too far forward after taking out the Tall Walkers, Big Blag will "scare" your toad and you'll miss out on the flies Volkmire's Inferno: eff this stage!! use the warp in the Karnath's Lair Intruder Excluder: you can kill Gassers with a charge attack ONLY IF you're holding a stick (not sure about the ones higher than ground level though e.g. 36:43) the trick to getting under the cog in Terra Tubes (41:31) and the trick to take out the Giblet in Rat Race (44:35) is brilliant.

Thanks, Jinxx! I've never really been brave enough to try to kill a gasser, but I can see how that could be useful in a couple spots! Glad you enjoyed the video!

Thank you! You've helped me out with quite a few NES games with Battletoads being one of them. I would have struggled for a long time without you video. I really appreciate your work. ___ If I can, I want to pay it forward and share my own knowledge. So a good strategy for Clinger Wringer is to use both thumbs (or a thumb and forefinger combo). I had trouble with that section not because of memorising the turns or timing, but because I wasn't pressing down firmly enough on the D-Pad when making quick transitions. This meant I lost time. However, when I switched to using two hands on the controller, I never missed a turn and can now beat that stage on my first attempt every time. Yes, every time. I hope that helps someone. I spent so long on that stage.

I’m really not much of a gamer, so I could be way off, but if you’re playing this on the original NES with the original controller and hardware, this has to be one of the top five hardest games ever. This thing was legendary when I was a kid. Nobody could hang with this thing but we all loved it. Imagine trying to play this on an old, rounded television screen that weighed 150 lbs with two controllers that were sticky with dried grape juice, while your parents and your friends parents (who were partying in the living room of the split level whose basement you were playing in) would come in every once in awhile to demand to play, only to get their ass kicked. You had until maybe 10:30 and nobody took any of this video game bullshit seriously. Also, you didn’t have those ergonomic gaming chairs; if it wasn’t a beanbag chair, it was criss cross apple sauce. We didn’t stand a chance but we played it relentlessly.

I absolutely love this game; honestly, it might be my favorite on the NES right behind the Mega Man games. I spent an entire summer a few years back working on familiarizing myself with the game and eventually was able to beat it. I can mostly do it at will these days, so that's kind of a cool trick to have up your sleeve to impress your friends.

I remember beating this game when I was around 15. I had to try so many levels so many times! I remember trying it as two player and outright giving up. It just seemed even more impossible. The most memorable section for me was the pipe system. I remember playing that one for about 3hrs because I kept dying and respawning before a 1UP. Most rewarding game to beat that I’ve ever played because of how challenging it is.

I didn’t realize that you could kill the guy in rat race right at the start. That level has wiped me so many times, I can’t stand it. I still doubt that I will ever beat the last level, but now I will actually be able to attempt it much more consistently. Thank you
@UCanBeatVideoGames3 жыл бұрын
That was big for me, because that last course in Rat Race is super rough, and then once you finally finish it, its hard not to choke on the boss. Taking out the rat on the first or second bomb makes it sooo much easier.
@conejopestilente3 жыл бұрын
*tip*: in Clinger Winger if you can't do it try to pause the game just after you hit a corner everytime it will make the level be a breeze. When you hit a corner if you are not inhumanly fast to change the direction quickly (or memorize it losing most of your hearts) the game will register that you are pushing the pad the wrong way, so with the pause button you take away that.

Oh, so THAT's how you beat Rat Race; I did it the hard way and never wanted to look at it again. When you were saying about Karnath's Lair being the hardest stage, I kept thinking, "Umm... RAT RACE!?" Thanks for the trick! I also think it's really interesting that the first boss is maybe the only instance I've seen of second-person perspective in a video game, unless you count the title screen of a Bond game, I guess.

I'm surprised that in the Karnath lair in the final room that you didn't show the shortcut to the door. On the yellow and magenta snake, when it comes over its first rise, if instead of jumping down at the last second, you wait for the tail to arrive, if you dash across and jump over the three vertical spikes, you can grab the snake as it comes up behind them over its second hump. Climb to the top of it, and you can just jump to the exit.

You conjured a memory of mine where my bro came to visit with a bag of magic. We got high as fuck and took on this game. We did manage to make it pretty far but, failed in the end. Had fun nonetheless. Had a bad day at work the next day, though, lol. Thanks for the tips. I played it once by myself a couple years ago and actually beat the speed bike (level 3) section without dying for the first time. Wish I recorded that moment. Anyway, keep kicking ass.
