@Dominus Vobiscum I no longer remember my comment about these but I spent my time studying the Civil War. He had no intention of freeing slaves but he did despise slavery and what he said was any politician will do. During his term views will certainly change but I'm sure the consistent thing with Lincoln is that he hated slavery. I would say he did stretched the powers given to the President but morally? He did great! I'mm not American so you can correct me or add something but this comment is kinda similar to those channels which focuses on the Civil War.

If you read more about the days of civil war you would have been less enthusiastic with Abe . Too many details of real hisrory are silenced although they exist in modern sources

@@ioannisimansola7115 to a certain extent, at the beginning yes, you are correct in that lincoln saw the fight to preserve the union. However, as time passed n seeing the severity of the war, he came to realize that the underlining reason of the war was essentially the reason for the disunion was indeed slavery

Lincoln had a change of heart? -- that's the standard excuse for Lincoln's barbarous war. The severity of the war was because Lincoln and his generals were waging TOTAL war against defenseless women, children and slaves contrary to the Geneva Conventions of that day. The Emancipation Proclamation was a desperation move to prevent Britain from coming in on the side of the South because the North was losing -- and it worked. Virtually everybody up to 1861 recognized that secession was a fundamental right of the states as a bulwark against tyranny, for the same reasons the 13 original states had a right to secede from Great Britain. But clever lawyer that he was, Lincoln redefined it as "saving the Union." At least 20 other countries had eliminated slavery without firing a shot. But Lincoln needed a war to create a strong, central government that would further the interests of his railroad and bank buddies -- crony capitalism.

I am from India now settled here in US. Every time I hear Gettysburg address tears flow out. It is so inspiring and yet so short.It seems it took just 3 minutes for President Lincoln. He is the greatest leader ever to grace this earth. He was practical and knew exactly what is required to save the union. No other leader not even Churchill , Gandhi or Nehru come close .

@@ShounakSarkar-ng9wg we can only speculate as he never got a chance to lead the nation and his decision to seek help with Nazis and Japanese imperial government is questionable. Did he know the atrocities Nazi regime was committing and still reached out as a means to an end philosophy? What would have happened had he survived and returned back to India after India got independence? Surely he would have been hanged had he returned when Brits were still ruling.

So if a man can support an enemy although knowing the past actions then why can't Netaji and it was the quote of Netaji himself " Freedom is not given its taken" and secondly I least bother what the Brits and the world think but for us (Indians) he is an angel who came in the worst of the conditions. And yes Churchill was more inhumane than Hitler.

As an immigrant, who had the opportunity to serve in the military for this great country, when I first read the biography of Lincoln I cried. What a great man! He suffered so much. But what annoys me the most is that he only had 5 days to enjoy the end of the civil war for which suffered and stressed much.

@mr_hands YouCONVENIENTLY didn't check the timelines. South Carolina legally seceded on December 20, 1860. The US Army, stationed at Ft Moultrie, on Sullivan Island, burned the fort and ILLEGALLY INVADED the soil of the free, independent, and sovereign nation of South Carolina, and took position of Ft Sumter on December 26, 1860, without permission or a treaty with SC or orders from Washington DC. And, neither President Buchanan nor Lincoln would remove the invading force when asked, but *DEMANDED* REVENUE TAX MONEY from a State no longer in the Union.

@@mr_hands Choosing to opt out of a "confederation" of sovereigns for political survival, is called SECESSION, not a declaration of civil war. Civil war is when two or more fractions of a nation fight for total control. That is what Lincoln did, NOT the sovereign states who wanted to be left alone.

This speech alone is why I am so proud to be an American. Why I love my country so much. I can’t help but sob quietly whenever I hear these words. Because it reminds us what we must always strive to be. Not just for our nation, or for the world. But also for ourselves and to our fellow man.

I’m Australian. This speech moves me and in a more recent sense evokes memories of American vets liberating my grandfather from Buchenwald concentration camp in 45. He’s still alive at 94 today. I wouldn’t even be alive if not for those guys. This nation, conceived on liberty and the proposition that all men are created equal showed my grandfather and countless others that ideal in their most hopeless times. I hope you Americans remember that. I’m not a victim of the media but it’s clear to see the division that is being sown in your country nowadays. Forget who your president is, remember someone like Lincoln and the ordinary American GI’s who liberated my grandfather. They were Americans. There are so many of you who hold these values to be “self evident”..it’s not about one guy at the top dictating how you should feel and then deal with one another. We are all human.

Jake Seymour - As an American Jake, I am grateful for your words. I am especially grateful that we could have been instrumental in rescuing your grandfather from a Nazi concentration camp. However I think you are most certainly a victim of the media. You don’t know what our current President is really fighting against or why it is imperative, even for you, that he succeed. When I learned this in school that was one of the biggest things that stuck with me. He mentions that the world will little note nor long remember what they said there, and yet this became one of the most well known and well received speeches of all time. It's a cool dichotomy.

This speech is more then just words.....they represent a belief in what is right and wrong. Over 32,000 men died in this battle in just a few days. Many battles and wars have taken place since then but, the message is still the same. Abraham Lincoln sumed up why there are wars. I am a Veteran of the USMC and servesd in Desert Storm and Desert Shield proudly. His words spoken in 1863 are still true today........

Four facts that will prove you're wrong about the South committing treason. 1: At that time in history, when the Southern states seceded. Not nowhere in the U. S constitution did it state that secession by a state, or states will be unconstitutunal. 2; Chief justice of the U.S. supreme court Salmon P. Chase said: Do not put the Confederate leaders on trial, it will condemn the North. For as the Constitution, secession is not rebellion. President Eisenhower kept a portrait of Gen. Lee hung on a wall in the oval office. He would not have hung up a portrait of a traitor. 4: The United States Navy named two of their submarines. USS Robert E. Lee USS Stonewall Jackson The United States Navy has never had a ship named Benedict Arnold. The reason for that, the United States Navy will not name their ships after traitors.

We who do not live in the United States cannot claim a national link or a political history that goes back directly to Mister Lincoln. But we are proud to be part of a human experience in which he stands as tall as any other person, that links all the peoples in the world, and which says that all people are created equal. His words still have not reached all corners of the world, and have not sunk in all hearts, but they will eventually, and they will forever.

Fun fact, Lincoln didn't care about slavery, his only concern was preserving the union, and to do that, he had to abolish slavery. He wrote "if I save the union without freeing a single slave, I would do that, if I could save the union by freeing all slaves I would do that..." Either way, he care about liberty for all, that's why he supported the union, and its because of that that he freed the slaves. But he didn't free slaves, the emancipation didn't apply to the southern slave loyal states under confederacy. Still his vision for the future where liberty is held as an imperative is the reason he supported the union and it was because of that that he went to war with the confederation, which eventually abolished slavery. So happy ending.

Actually, Thomas Jefferson envisioned the entire nation as an agrarian society WITH slaves ala the Deep South (Jefferson Davis was named after him), and he sold them frequently to stay out of debt. That fuzzy bunny history has been disproved for a long time now.

he envisioned it as an agrarian society of small hold farmers not one of plantations with slave owners. He actually mortgaged his slaves and when he couldn't make repayment they repossessed and sold. Jefferson was a product of his time though and he didn't believe that blacks were equal to whites. Furthermore genetic testing has shown that he did father children although he never married after his first wife died as he promised her he never would.

I am from India but then too Abraham Lincoln inspires me a lot.I always wandered that why America is top in almost everything.I realised that it is on top cuz of its leaders that made the people beleive in theirselves that even God cant perish you if you have true willpower.Great leader,I always cry that why he had to die at end.When everything was over and he could even enjoy the victory.Then I realised that people are sent in this world for a reason and that his was over.I can now proudly say that;"HE NOW BELONGS TO THE AGES"

Edward Everett was the main speaker, and spoke for over two hours. He instantly recognized Lincoln's speech as the greater speech - indeed, as the best speech he had ever heard.

I thought I'd inspire myself by listening to this historic address, imagining myself a farmer on lands, in the heart of war-torn territory. Confiding in my presidents speech for comfort and morale. I was deeply moved by the first 10 seconds of his speech, until ADD kicked in and I found myself searching for game of thrones commentary on the latest episode.

What he did was wage war on his own people ! Allowed his army to brutally destroy the South. He invaded a nation that had declared ourselves to be free and independent of the U.S . That is South Carolina and the CSA. He didn't even attempt a peaceful solution. Some may say that no State has a right to secede. But each State gave it's consent to join. Why should they not be freely able to leave. Just stating some facts, not intended to be offensive.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. In history class we had to memorize part of this speech in order to get a passing grade. If we wanted a perfect score, we had to memorize the whole thing. Everyone showed up to class only knowing the first couple sentences or so. On the morning of the day when we would be reciting the speech, I decided that I should memorize the whole thing. My ancestors came here on the Mayflower, helped build this country all throughout the 17th, 18th, and 19th century-so it was my obligation to honor them, in whatever small way I could. I ended up memorizing the whole speech just in time for class that day. Needless to say, my teacher and the others students were surprised that someone had showed up knowing the whole. It was such a great moment in my life reciting such a brilliant, well-written speech from America’s history.

@@autumnfrost-art , let me explain, in 2017 a Mexican (15 year old girl) driving an uninsured vehicle all by herself, ran over me, had I not been in the shadow of the hospital I would still be dead. My lawyer explained I would not be able get a nickel, because legally it was the same as me being injured by a wild animal, she never even tried to apologise for what she did, I was in the hospital for 6 months. These people are hardened criminals already before they cross that border seeking monetary gain. The USA is broke, Mexico is not, Mexico is a wealthy country that should be doing something about the problem. Like Trump said, they are not sending their best, we get the rejects of their society, the worst. Would you break the law and tresspass into Mexico? Then expect to be treated humanely when you get caught? I have no sympathy or compassion whatsoever for these criminals. These people do NOT deserve a second chance, and actions should be taken against them to insure that they are unable to repeat their crime when caught. Im even a advocate for using lethal force against them. Then maybe Mexico would quit allowing this to happen, and at least help pay for the wall, we need another wall or imigration checkpoints in middle Florida for the illegals comming in through the carribean nations! Soon.
