If we were to ask you to list a few things about former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, it’s likely that many of you would mention things like his role in the abolition of slavery in the U.S., his assassination, his hat and beard (which incidentally the latter was grown because a little girl suggesting he’d get more votes that way), or the Gettysburg Address. But on top of all that, as with George Washington before him and the legendary Teddy Roosevelt after, it turns out Lincoln was also an exceptional, near unbeatable fighter who in his younger years would throw down with anyone who felt like they were man enough.

@@joshglover2370 You people who blame Lincoln are clueless. The North was behind Lincoln after Jeff Davis was stupid enough to fire on the US flag. The war would have happened anyway, because the North and South hated each other. A constitution which allows bits of a country to separate willy nilly is just a joke, and the whole of America would have ended up a joke. The Confederacy's own constitution explicitly disallowed secession, so the South was totally hypocritical. If Lincoln hadn't gone to war, a future US president would have, to reunite the country.

Its easy to do, and its type of throws that earns you highest score. I think the highest score throws simply are that your opponents legs are above your head during the slam. Suplex also is absolutely devastating outside softer surfaces if you would end up in actual fight, and you are wrestler. Also something like super bomb would smash people, and end the fight.

I believe the “Rail” in Rail splitter refers to Fence Rails and has nothing to do with railroad ties .
@chloekaftan
@chloekaftan 4 жыл бұрын
its also entirely possible that the railroad tie abe split in half was rotten to the core, or that it was a sapwood or heart which is very brittle even when its not rotten and splits very easily when soaked with fresh water/rain (which is the main reason many museum cutters, schooners, and clippers rot very quickly, since theyre often moved to freshwater basins prior to being lifted out, wooden ships hate being away from the sea and will rot very quickly as a result), most railroad ties of that era was made with wood of low quality or off cuts of larger logs, high quality timber like teak, purple heart, white oak, fir, spruce, or live oak was typically reserved for classic shipbuilding.
@jkg6211
@jkg6211 4 жыл бұрын
If it was a fence railing - made from the most common wood at the time for that purpose, Locust - it would have been a true feat of strength indeed. Locust is notoriously strong, hard to cut, OR split - hence the very reason it was used for that purpose. And it was not only plentiful, but grows fast - so quite rapidly renewable. And left with it's bark on - a perfect cattle fence... large, long tough thorns - not only on the limbs, but all over the trunk as well.

Lincoln's father often hired him out as labor, as you know. He built "colonial split rail fences", they were composed of long pieces of split logs interlocking and stacked and angled to form a fence for a paddock for animals, or to mark property lines. When he made the run from Salem down the Mississippi to New Orleans, he was working with Alan Gentry, a distant kin of mine. Love all your channels Simon keep them coming, nice work Danny.

@Matt Stafford I don't know if any are still in existence. The times his father hired him out were mostly in Indiana. Though he did build a few in Macon County at the new farm/homestead of his father; and near New Salem, for extra work from his duties of running the store. In Illinois many species of indigenous trees would have held up to time, though I am not sure of infestation of insects, given imports from other states and countries.

On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected sixteenth president of the United States. He won as “The Railsplitter” candidate, a nickname acquired the previous May when Illinois Republicans convened at Decatur to endorse a favorite son for president. Crotch Lock. aka Cow chain, aka High crotch toss. Starting from the down position, Blue on top Red on Bottom. Blue sweeps Reds arm into Reds crotch while Blue simultaneously grasps the wrist of Reds arm by reaching from behind and between the legs of Red at the crotch. This isolates the arm between the legs and takes away a posting arm of support and balance. The Red Opponent is Pushed forward against the folded shoulder onto the ground. The Toss is initiated when Red is lifted by their own arm facing away from Blue. Reds arm is Pulled through their legs and used as leverage for Blue to throw Red Forward and Head over Heel onto the ground on their back. . If done correctly to an unsuspecting opponent it can result in appearing as if Blue just stood up from behind Red and unrolled him on his back from shoulder height like a carpet while still holding Reds wrist. I can imagine it would be devastating on hard ground. It will knock the breath out of ya on a mat. XD

The phrase is still there even if you can only enter the contest by buying something like a cup of coffee, or if you have to buy your entry directly. When, clearly, a purchase is necessary to enter the contest. What does the phrase "No purchase necessary" legally mean, and why do the contest organizers need to say it?

Do a story on Tom Cruze. No not that one the other one. He was an Australian postman and used to lift up 44 gallon drums onto the back of his truck and fix it in the middle of nowhere. it's a really good story

Lincoln's "Rail-Splitter" reputation wasn't for splitting railroad ties, but thinner tree trunks to make "Split-Rail" fences. This was a common, easily made type of fence to designate your property from that of your neighbor.

The rails referred to were cedar logs used in fencing, not railway ties.

We thought we were going to see Lincoln v. Teddy Roosevelt at WrastleMania 4, but, at the last minute, they teamed up against legendary tag team duo Washington and Jefferson. But not a month later, they all teamed up to form the first iteration of Degeneration X.

To set it up, you are going to lock your hands low on the leg and high on the body then drive him onto his shoulder. The hand that is on the body comes out and you slide it around the head to lock up the cradle. Once it is locked up, take him over to his back for the pin. The crotch lock

I have trained in multiple forms of martial arts for over 30 years, but what I've always found most useful, when needing to defend myself, was one, the wrestling with my dad (a state tournament high school and U.S. Navy wrestler)since I could crawl, two, very strong and dense bones, three, a ridiculous need to compete and win, four, always needing to do physical work maintaining strength, and five, probably most helpful, at 6'1" I have extremely long arms and large, strong hands, with a tip to tip wingspan of 6'11" (my dad has similar proportions with slightly shorter legs, causing his younger brothers to cal him, "gorilla," and, "ape,"). My reach advantage, and fast and heavy hands, usually allowed me to hit my opponent many times without them able to even reach me.

Former college wrestler and coach, of all the old-timey names for wrestling holds mentioned in the video the only one I recognize, that's still in the common vernacular is crotchlock, not kidding. It's pretty much what it sounds like. You lock over the back of your opponent in between his legs with the underside arm going around the opponent's waist on the far side

Not as cool as the one time when Andrew Jackson had to be stopped from beating his would-be assassin to death with his cane. I think he might have that one over Lincoln for sure.

Jackson was a troll of presidential levels, with the brass ones to back it up. Lincoln was a man of high moral character, who recognized his gifts and made the most of them.

Not railroad ties, though. Rails, like for fences. They used to make fences by splitting a log into fourths or however many they could get out of it. So spitting that kind of rail in one is something a few strong guys could probably do.

The crotch hold is actually fairly mundane thing, you even see it in the theatrical pro wrestling body slam that where someone hooks under the crotch and below the neck to slam an opponent on their back. it's just a way to get underneath the opponent's body for leverage

During Lincoln's time railroad weren't pressured treated with petroleum products, and may have been slightly smaller on some gauges so in some circumstances it might have been true. The rail splitting refers to fence rails.

I understood he split timber for split rail fences, not railroad ties. Then he’d be a tie splitter. Splitting steel rails with an axe would be a feat indeed.
