the bike increasing the encounter rate is a question a lot of shiny hunters have been wondering about for a long time, so even though it was a tiny portion of the video i appreciate that info a lot lol. do you happen to know currently if the same thing applies for hgss, or any other games? i remember reading that the bike decreases the encounter rate in rse but that's all i've ever seen about it.

That's one of those bits of info I also didn't know as a speedrunner, but I wasn't sure if it was widely known or not. HGSS also has the same +30% on the second encounter rate if you're riding your bike (but note that there are other factors that impact your encounter rate in those games, I'll do a full write up when I have some time)

I think the encounter rate difference was mentioned briefly at GDQ before, but not the reasoning (or else I'm hallucinating having heard that part lol), super interesting to hear more details about it!

Taking a quick look at the dates, Lincoln's birthday is also Charles Darwin's birthday, which is probably more significant, I'd hazard a guess. Looking up Junichi Masuda's birthday on japanese wikipedia also gives me "Coming of Age Day" (for a few years, not all), "Ski Day" and "Sakurajima Day". While "Coming of Age Day" sounds like a better thing to celebrate than Masuda's birthday, 2006 did not have that date fall on that day, so I'm guessing it really is Masuda glazing. It would be interesting to see if any other employee has a birthday be a special date or if it really is just him. My guess for New Year's day malus is that not only it is "World Peace Day" (therefore less fighting), it's japanese tradition to go visit a shrine. So not having things blocking your way could be seen as auspicious? Just a guess. If that's true then days that "should be peaceful" instead of "should be a celebration" kinda becomes a bit of a theme, I suppose?

<a href="#" class="seekto" data-time="510">8:30</a> my theory, especially for christmas eve: the devs expect a good part of their playerbase to get (and thus start playing) the game at this date, so they want to let players "breeze through" the game a bit, then increase the encounter rate later when they're invested into the game and thus less likely to be annoyed by it?

Ngl, I didnt know about the encounter lowering abilitys and items. Probably usefull for dexnav hunts to use the black flute to reduce the chances of missing a repel message and taking 1 step and loosing a chain (Its happened to me too many times 😭)
