Very good cat parenting! I also tell my cats I'm proud of them when they do good and reward their behavior. A suggestion: I would get a hard shell carrier/crate and use the seat belt to lock it into place. If you're in an accident, your soft carrier offers no protection from crumpling or being thrown.

I love Kurt! He's such a cutey! I used to have give my otherwise very active and confident cat a sedative before taking him in the car. If not, he would become extremely agitated and cry very loudly. The scariest part was when he would become very quiet because he would hyperventilate and faint, which always terrified and panicked me. So much drama! So, no car trips unless absolutely necessary.

I grew up allergic and kind of never understood cats. Years later, found a kitten under my car, who became Max. My daughter would give Max a bath every day (poor Max) to keep the dander low... I think I must have outgrown the allergy for the most part. Now, years later, I'm retired and I just woke up with Toby by my side, purring away. I LOVE Cats and I never thought I'd say that! I may try this cause I'd love to take him to my mom's. AWESOME !

Aw that's so sweet, it's important to comfort cats on journeys and not many people think of it, they just want to quickly get the cat from point A to point B without causing harm to their self or the cat. If they feel at ease in the carrier, then it'll be much easier when you need to bring them into it again.

Mine poop in the carrier. Even thou i did not feed them before the trip and they pooped at home. Nightmare. In airport they make us take them out of the carrier and one dumb security guard asked my husband to take his harness off and he nearly ran away. I was livid. Travelling with cats is awful

I had a Korat once upon a time, and he would travel 8-hours home with me. The big difference being he LOVED car rides. If I put his carrier on the floor and unzipped the top, he'd jump right in and wait patiently to be escorted to the car. I'd do about the same ritual; his travel bed went on the passenger seat, a travel litterbox in the footwell and off we'd go. It was always fun if we'd hit traffic and there'd be a van full of kids next to us. All the kids would be losing their minds "MOM!! THERE'S A KITTY IN THE CAR NEXT TO US!". One time, he'd put his paws on the dash to look around and left two paw prints in the dust. I refused to dust the car for the longest time - it was just so damned cute. Later in his life, if I was working on one of my other cars, he'd sit patiently in the passenger seat expecting to go for a ride. Only cat I've ever had that loved car rides.

Kurt did so well! You did it a lot like I would do it with my little tabby Slippers. She got to be a great traveler when we'd go visit her grandma (my mom) for holidays - it was about a six-hour drive. She would settle in and do just fine. I'd also keep her in the passenger seat up front so I could give her pets and she could see me. Carrier seat-belted securely! She'd come out of the carrier during stops, and sometimes use the littler box on the floor in the back. After a quick lunch break, I'd share a piece of hamburger or chicken with her for a little snack And she loved grandma's house - it had wall to wall carpeting (my condo had hardwood floors) - ah luxury, and grandma enjoyed having Slippers visit (Mom was a cat lover with no pets at that time). Hope Kurt got the turkey giblets, or at least some turkey meat and you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and visit together!

Very cool. Everytime I come home, my cat has to smell my hand to know it's me. The side of the hand is the deal maker. She smells the side of end of my hand and fingers and then rubs the side of her face on my hand or fingers about three times and then we are cool. Great video. My Orange Cat travels really well, like yours. I drove from Seattle to Washington DC with my Orange Cat. We only stopped overnight once. He would walk around the car, look out the window and go back to sleep. I have also flown to Europe and back with him (you need papers to do that). 😻

we take our 3 cats 11 hours from VA to MI every year. We just let them out of the carrier and put a litter box behind the seat. They just sit and chill after about 30 minutes. If we keep them in the carriers they just cry for 6 hours straight before they just get so tired.

Shocked and bewildered, she just stared at me with heartbroken eyes. The next day, she was gone. She never returned back home. Cats are adorable, but so unpredictable and unforgiving too.

I'm glad he's a good traveler. Have you considered Cat/Dog seatbelts for a 7 hour trip through? Basically, get a harness, get a pet seatbelt, which is like a tether. Plug the seatbelt into the ends of the ones in your car, put cat in harness. Clip harness to seatbelt. Now your cat can have some space to roam in the back of the car. Pet seatbelts are adjustable, so you can decide how much slack to give him. You'll still need a litterbox and a shelter so he can get out of the light/heat.

@@yaboicolleen It doesn't really take harness training. Though in my case it was more a matter of necessity. I don't harness my cats unless we're going to be traveling a long, long way. Certainly, if you're trying to train yours, you don't want bad associations. that just stuffing them in the harness can produce. My non-harness trained cats were perfectly fine. It was a 3-day trip both ways, so 6 days of all day car travel. The seatbelts I got could not reach to the front of the car, which was ideal. So I put the belts out to their longest extension, which was just enough for them to hop up in the back seat window and look out when they wanted. I put their bed in a cardboard box so that they had the option for shade. And their litter box was opposite their bed so they could hop into it. They had some free roam up/down options. I largely chose this method of transport because of the length of the trip and one of my cats howling like a banshee and scraping up his own nose on one time I had to take him to the specialty vet that was further away. I thought giving him room to move would improve his experience. And I think it did. Though he did still howl for three hours straight the first day. He's a Siamese mix, so he has an impressive howl. It was down to just an hour the second day. And after that it wasn't an issue. Apparently cats are prone to car sickness and that's part of the upset, though. And there's not really anything anyone can do to fix that. Best of luck with your training.
