this is true. No one in my family was a cat person. No one. I actually hated cats growing up, I always saw them as selfish and self-serving which they are haha. Ended up having a few relationships with women who had a cat and so I spent time with their cat. Realized that I was severely mistaken and that cats are actually wonderful. When I decided to get a pet, I was trying to decide between a dog and a cat and came to the conclusion that a cat was a better fit for me at the time. This makes me really miss Chester, a huge tom cat who just showed up at our rural house when my kids were little. He adopted us, would never come inside, but was very affectionate outdoors. He was territorial and a big time fighter, getting badly scratched up some nights. My wife would patch him up each time, and he would recover, and be just as lovable as ever. As ferocious as he was with other cats and with raccoons, he never scratched or bit anyone and allowed even small children to carry him around all over the yard. Greatest cat ever.

This brought tears to my eyes. 35 years ago my step mother spent possibly as long, coaxing a very badly injured ginger cat, into, what my father called ‘the best cat’s home on Earth’. He had to have his tail removed, but was so fluffy he had ‘trousers’. If anyone came to stay he would disappear. Then, he’d crane his neck round the corner, and realise it was just the 3 of us. He would follow my father right the way round the garden. We had a circular path. Then my Dad would turn around and he’d follow him the other way. At 16-20 going on dates, he would follow me up the stairs in the dark. Then his eyes would blink as the light went on, and he would stay for a petting, just the right amount of time. My abiding memory is of him going to my bedroom door to be let out. When my Dad told me he’d died, a 20 year old man cried for a day. He was the best cat ever. Now 50 I am in floods of tears writing this. We had 5 or 6 years of his love and total appreciation. RIP Ginger

There are two types of "not a cat person": someone who has not really given any cat a chance, and someone who cannot TOLERATE other creatures having or enforcing boundaries. Cats enforce their own rules, and if someone's ego can't handle that, they can't handle cats. Most of the time, though, it's just someone who hasn't spent enough time with any cat to make an emotional connection, which can be fixed with a purring kitten or endearing stray pleading to be fed and needing to have its trust *earned*.

I love both cats and dogs, but you don't necessarily have to be an egocentric person to like or dislike an animal

Your theory only holds true assuming that all humans are good or at least neutral.

the sentence that "you never choose a cat, a cat chooses you" is so true. I live in my present house for 5 years. I remember coming first time there to see how the constuction goes, and seeing that cat for the first time as well. After a couple of months I finally moved to my house, and the cat started coming to me a few times a week. At first I didn't let him get inside, I only fed him outside with leftovers from my fridge. He wasn't scared or sth, I just didn't want to have an animal. Then he started coming to me few times a day, he just demanded food, and a loooot of pets. There was once a situation when this cat somehow sneaked through the door, when I wasn't looking, and without me knowing, stayed inside for a night. I was really suprised when I found him laying on my couch in the morning. I was suprised even more when I found out that him - a wild cat didn't pee anywhere, and didn't destroy anything. And since it was starting to be pretty cold outside, I decided to let the cat stay inside for nights. I bought him cat food, and a lot of toys. He loved them. And now - a few years later I am a very happy owner of a beautiful cat. I cannot imagine life without him. I still can't belive my luck that from hundreds of houses in the neighbourhood, he chose me. And I am so thankful to God for that.

We took care of a stray cat for 8 years before he dissappered. He was about 5 when he 1st showed up. We made sure he had food and water and a shelter or shelters. While we never could get his trust 100 percent as well as not being able to touch him or get him into the house, he was a part of our life. He would get dry food all the time and wet food only when we knew he was outside or saw him as there were other animals as well that ate the dry food. He would always be waiting on the deck for his food and he would eat it while we sat on the deck. Part of wished that we could have gotten him in the house during out winters but he was just to feral to want to come inside but we did the best we could and again he had 8 years of love in so many ways

I'm awakened every morning with meows, rubs and purrs. When I leave the house, I try to sneak out so I don't have to see her sitting at the door watching me leave. I'm a cat person.

I think the most amazing thing here is your willingness to accept him the way he is - he is an outdoor cat who obviously appreciates his freedom more than anything, and you respected that, while at the same time providing him with food, and comfort and warmth of a home when he needed it. His final act of trust in you proved to be correct judgement from his side in the end :) I think it is good not to be a "cat person" because then you're not overly needy or protective of your cat, but instead, you're exactly the kind of owner that they need.

I have convinced 4 feral cats in my lifetime, that human servants are a good thing. It usually takes a couple of months for them to become comfortable with your presence, as they decide that your "offerings" of food are acceptable to them. One of them decided she loved our big floofy (indoor only) male cat, and sped up the process to about 3 weeks, but usually 2-3 months. It is a great lesson in celebrating small victories, and patience.

You can also use a dog igloo, a big or medium-sized plastic container, or styrofoam cooler with a door cut out on the side, and folded blankets (preferably at least one wool) on the bottom, around the sides and a quilt and tarp over the top and door (but leave an inch or two open for the cat to get in the door). I did that with a dog igloo. A stray cat felt so comfortable in it that she had her kittens in there. I eventually brought her and her kittens into the house.

I went to an adoption event at a local pet shop. Lots of cats in the cages. All very cute and friendly. Then there was one black kitten all alone in his own cage. They said he was too fearful to be held and had bad anxiety from being around other cats. I chose him. It’s been six years. He’s my buddy. Always at the door when I come home. Always wants to lay in my lap. Also, I discovered early on that he’s a shoulder cat. He loves being on my shoulders for a good view. I give him plenty of outdoor time so he doesn’t get bored and so he can get some exercise. Love this little gremlin.
