Jung said: "“In this world man is Abraxas, who gives birth to and devours his own world.” What do you think about it?

The central error in all of these online "gnostic" presentations when dealing with Jung's understanding of Abraxas is the failure to grasp and accept the fact that for Jung Abraxas is not a salvational god for humans as is, for example, the god of Marcion and certain other ancient Gnostics. For Jung, Abraxas, the "highest" god to emerge from the Pleroma, cannot be a means of the salvation of the human individual. In facing Abraxas, the human can only be dissolved back into the everything/nothing where all distinctions are lost. In Vedic Brahmanism and Valentinian Gnosticism this dissolution is desirable and the only path that can be finally followed. But Jung rejected this path. Jung's entire body of work was aimed at the individuation process through deepening consciousness. For Jung, man must acknowledge the reality of Abraxas, but to face and worship Abraxas is self-destruction. For Jung, at the top/bottom is the Pleroma; then there is Abraxas which contains all opposites as effect but without distinction; then there is the distinction of Sun-God/Darkness-Devil duality; then there is the measureless multitude of lesser gods and non-human entities as ethereal and chthonic forces; then there is man whose only way to salvation as human distinction is following the Star of consciousness. For Jung there is no known God of human salvation. The only human salvation lies in the continually deepening gateway of consciousness. For most humans this path is too frightening and demanding. Even Jung himself grew faint-hearted, though not defeated, in his last years. Jung said, "Man is hopelessly unconscious." There is not a single ancient Gnostic teacher known to us who taught what Jung taught in the Seven Sermons To the Dead. I challenge anyone to demonstrate otherwise.

K. Arlan Ebel - A very advanced comment that you have put forth. I encountered a terrifying entity with a snake-like body (saw two tailed or legged serpentine movements) with a lion/rooster/ghoulish like face about 30 years ago during the only vision that I ever had in my life so far. It may have been Abraxas, the Demiurge or Melusine in disguise that came out of that portal...perhaps they are all one and the same. I defaulted into state of love, let my ego dissolve and surrendered during the encounter...the face then changed into a white porcelain-like mask of beauty, flirtatiously smiled at me and projected love...was this Sophia or a reflection of my divine twin? It took me a few years to re-stabilize from the encounter. The event was certainly a judgement of my soul. I wasn't pure, but I was pure enough to survive the experience. I did not even learn of what Gnosticism was until 2020.

@@seththomas2923 Thank you for your very advanced comment. It may have been Iao/Yaldabaoth/Abraxas/Samael/Jupiter/Satan entering the room, but that was not the same entity that exited the room. Even Jesus states, “If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand” Refer to Mark 3:25, Matthew 12:25 The Abraxas face changed into the face of Sophia and projected intense love and joy back at me. An entity of evil cannot project love unless it has love within itself to give. Otherwise, it is divided against itself. In other texts, such as within the closing paragraph of the Latin versions of the Easter Proclamation (Exsultet), when denoting the light of the morning star, the title of Lucifer is a reference to Jesus Christ himself. The word Lucernarium, the service and ritual of lighting lamps, begins with the word “Lucer”, yet again symbolizes Christ. By some, Lucifer is considered more of a liberator and guiding spirit, a representative of the Promethean archetype. I invite you to continue further investigating the etymology of the word "Lucifer". Keep in mind, it was the Catholic Orthodoxy that executed and burnt people at the stake, not the Gnosticism of the Cathars. I would consider murderous executions and burning people alive as being evil and Satanic.

@@seththomas2923 Although I don't agree with all your perspectives, I am fascinated and intrigued by the depth of your insights, knowledge and connections. Thank you for taking the time to write such an elaborate response. The face I encountered was never serpent like...just what came behind it was. You call it "seduction"...I call it love. The smile was to put me at ease and comfort. My vision occurred about three decades ago from an Orthodox path...I did not even know what Abraxas, Sophia or Gnosticism was until 2020. I am not or ever have been a member of any lodge, order or cult...not yet at least. You may say the vision was evil...yet it saved me. Most of my understanding comes from gnosis...an awareness to a greater consciousness or being. I may have committed suicide if it were not for that vision/encounter, for it told me there is something much greater to the universe than meets the eye...it gave me proof of God. If the devil shows up, it means that God is just beyond. As humans, we have certain "divine" experiences, but it is our interpretations of them that may be incorrect. The dots are there...just not sure how to connect them properly. You mentioned going into deeper conversation not meant for KZbin comments...is there another platform that you would prefer? We are most likely not going to change each other's minds, but I do learn from opposing viewpoints and welcome other perspectives, provided it is done in a civil and respectful manner. I consider myself a generic seeker...walking the path of both the Orthodox and the Gnostic but too stubborn to commit to either.

...I panicked and read on, my heart contracted in cold fear before my fate. "The bird is struggling out of the egg," it read. "The egg is the world. Whoever wants to be born must first destroy a world. The bird is flying to God. The name of the God is called Abraxas." .... ....The link then grew closer and more intimate, and I began to feel that in this dream of longing I was invoking Abraxas himself. .... ...Abraxas has nothing to object to in any of vour thoughts or any of your dreams. Always remember that. But once you become faultless and normal he abandons you in favour of a new vessel into which he can pour his thoughts." .... Demian by Hermann Hesse

The Catholic church later deemed Abraxas a pagan god, and ultimately branded him a demon as documented in J. Collin de Plancy's Infernal Dictionary, Abraxas (or Abracax) is labeled the "supreme God" of the Basilidians, whom he describes as "heretics of the second century".

I have genuinely tried to understand the basics of Jung's concepts by reading wikipedia articles and watch videos like this. Each of them mentions terms that are either extremely vague or completely undefined. It all seems like generic nonsense at the end. This one is just a narration of everything I've read in Wikipedia so far, without explaining anything further.
@hermeshub94562 жыл бұрын
If you want to learn the terminology behind the words please read up on personality psychology, myth, and some religious work. Then read Jung's original work. Only by reading the original work, you can start understanding what it is about.
