There are many questions when it comes to the Fear of the Unknown and in this video, we’ll explore the depths of our Unconscious through the life and work of H. P. Lovecraft and Carl Jung.
The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the Unknown. But how do we view this Unknown and what are its patterns of being? Where does this fear originate from and what is the meaning behind it?
Firstly, let’s see who exactly was H.P. Lovecraft? Well, Lovecraft was an American writer of weird and horror fiction who became famous for his creation of the Cthulhu Mythos and the lore behind it.
In his stories, the focus was set on interpreting the place of humankind in the universe. For Lovecraft, humanity was an unimportant part of Cosmos that didn’t care for it. Moreover, the entire Cosmos could be swept away at any given moment!
Dreams, those gateways to the unconscious as Carl Jung claimed, had an important place in the literary career of Lovecraft. Many of his writings were influenced by dreams that are, as Lovecraft in the Hypnos tale says: “those rare dreams beyond dreams which come never to common men, and but once or twice in the lifetime of imaginative men”
Jung teaches us that the Modern Man suffers horribly from the feelings of emptiness and disillusionment due to the extreme and terrible separation of the rational and the spiritual which is repressed into the unconscious, and Lovecraft’s characters feel it the most.

So far I have not read any Lovecraft's story, but I would like to say that author G. R. R. Martin (with whose work, on the other hand, I am quite familiar with) was inspired by Lovecraft. Martin said that he doesn't write stories by some plan, but he lets his characters create their own story. Dream cult (can I call it so?) was also very often used in Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series. Many members of Targaryen family had prophetic dreams, and so did wargs like Jon Snow and Bran Stark.

Very interesting. I wasn't aware of the fact that G.R.R. Martin was inspired by Lovecraft! I'd invite you to give Lovecraft a go as you can find all of his stories online and most of them are short. Maybe start with the Hypnos one to get the feel of it. :D

Great video and take on these two subjects. Over the past couple of years I've really taken a huge interest in Jungian philosophy and cosmic horror, as I began a journey of true self realizing but also grew in existential dread. I found myself wondering if this is perhaps a common mixture and I'm not disappointed that I searched around. My favorite HPL book right now is Mountain of Madness and for Jung it's between Aion or Red Book.

Know that after knowing so much life won't feel the same, the thing we must do now is to spread what we know.

@@criss3619 absolutely. There's definitely a point of no return. Sometimes I feel like it's a cursed thing to realize these things, but I wouldn't ever want to "unlearn" them either.
