The programme shows the dramatic life-saving impact of ABS in reducing powered two-wheeler (PTW) accidents by a staggering third. If this feature was installed during manufacture on all PTWs of 50cc and above, it would save in South East Asia alone, 40,000 lives (equates to 80 fully loaded A380s) in the first five years following its introduction. Additionally, the ratio of serious injuries to fatalities would be many times higher.
The cost for ABS is approximately only US$40 for the unit (a single channel system fitted to the front wheel only) which is an immensely modest amount when amortised over the life of a bike, but this simple life-saving measure is not yet mandated, resulting in large numbers of people being killed and seriously injured in accidents which simply needn't have happened.
