Love your show. Your guest suggested that he was at a loss with audiophile words and phrases describing sounds when evaluating stereo equipment of recordings. What he suggested was reviewers should define the word and offer musical examples of the term. I too was in that same boat until I came across a recording that did exactly that. It is a Chesky Recording entitled “The Ultimate Demonstration Disc” It defines such audiophile concepts as Transparency, Depth, Midrange Purity, Dynamic Test, Presence, Visceral Impact and Holographic Imaging. It follows each term with a musical example highlighting the term. I ran across the recording on Tidal streaming service. An excellent guide for evaluating equipment and recordings.

Great video Tarun! And YES I had the same experience with room treatments. I hired someone to teach me REW and to take measurements and read them. Of course reading them and interpreting takes time and experience. But he recommended putting thick bass traps on the back wall since my sofa is against the wall. I put them up and didn’t like it at all. Put up four of them. So I reverted to only one behind my head because the four killed the room. Made it sound much smaller. It was like putting the musicians on the songs in small rooms. Basically I reverted to 50% of room treatment compared to what was recommended. It gave me a RT60 of around 3-4ms which I like more since I listen to a lot of classical. Of course I did a ton of experimentation and this way you kinda learn your room more and what makes differences. As a musician I like less treatment. Sounds more natural and not like a studio.

Brilliant idea, Tarun! At some point in the future you could maybe discuss buzzwords additional to "fast bass" that audiophiles use. Off the top of my head, there's "grainy treble", "smooth midrange", "authority", "thin sounding", "warm", "lean", "neutral"... and so on; the list is long and there'd be plenty to talk about. If you were to give examples of tracks that relate to them, people might have a chance of coming to understand them in the same way you do. BTW, seeing as you asked me to let you know how my system (recently upgraded by adding an XTZ A2-300 class D power amp to my Audiolab 6000A and Quad S2 speakers) performs, here goes. The XTZ doesn't change the Audiolab sound signature (I'm so glad about that), but adds something to imagery and authority, particularly in the bass. It didn't sound good immediately, but needed several days to break in and may indeed stiil be improving. One final point: You haven't discussed mood. Sometimes I seem to be in the mood for listening, and other times, not so much. It can't be down to equipment, as it's the same (at least for a while), and unless it's some subtle environmental factor or other, then I tentatively put it down to what mood I'm in. In general though, as I've gradually improved my system, my propensity to be in the right sort of mood seems to be increasing! :-)

Was an OMG moment, before I was hearing sound and then I was listening to music. This might be impossible, but as a scientist (biologist, not engineer), it would be helpful to have some objective measure of how good your system is or where the weal link(s) is (i.e. speakers, amp, DAC, etc.). I know there are demo CDs with sound samples and I'm wondering if they could be used along with a program to analyze your set-up. In a way Dirac does this but only optimizes what you have and doesn't comment on the hardware. Maybe some enterprising audiophile/programmer could do this. Realistic or just a dream?

I was thinking of upgrading but I’m too lazy 😂 instead I’m going through my Apple Music library and making a playlist of all the nice tracks from the very well recorded albums. No matter how good a system is, if the music is poorly recorded, and a great portion is, you’re not going to get a very good listening experience. Despite the Mythbusters proving you can polish a turd, you can’t really make bad recordings sound great no matter your investment in your system. I think I’m up to about 35 tracks so far and will hopefully end up with about 70 or so.

If you do eventually upgrade, you might find that there are more fine-sounding tracks than you realised! ;-) I know I've discovered this as I've gone from a Sony STR-DN1080 AV receiver plus Q acoustics 3020i starter system (I still use this for watching movies) to a dedicated music amp and better speakers.

@@johncallaghan3097 My system is already stereophile quality. 4k stereo amp, 3k speakers, quality interconnects. The only way the poorer recordings would sound better is a smoother system rather than a nicely detailed system. Many of the poorer recorded albums I still enjoy listening to because I enjoy the content, but can’t appreciate the recording quality as I can with well recorded albums.

Never a truer word spoken. In fact the better the system, the more apparent the variations in recording quality. If we're fortunate the engineers won't have drifted too far from what we would wish to hear, but processing and old,"warm and fuzzy" recordings will never sound amazing. When listening to something of that standard I take my audiophile hat off and forget about being too critical as it would mean being without some very enjoyable music in the process.

@@oliverbeard7912 Maybe it’s a bit like older film camera lenses. They performed excellent on film bodies but put them on high res digital bodies and they fall very short. Older albums generally recorded poorly sounded fine on 1970 amps and 1970 speakers. I do have an equaliser in the system if I choose to run the audio through it to try to smooth out the old recordings but they still can’t be polished.

@@aussie8114 A "thumbs up" from me. Resolution is a double edged sword. We want to leave the best recordings alone as much as possible, whilst smoothing out the nasty ones. Oh for a perfect world and perfect recordings,eh?.😮

Advice for Sid. When you get it sounding good and you are happy, RUN!

I will take that advice too 😉👍

I wasn’t sure where you were going with the upgrade path and marriage. The audiophile path is less expensive than the other for sure, however it could also have the same outcome if the other half doesn’t share your views with new gear 😬😉. My attempt at being funny. I knew you weren’t going there.
