I'm guessing that it's at least 16 years since I visited Vientiane to get my Thai Tourist visa. It was OK but I wasn't expecting fireworks. I was happy to get back to Nong Khai and catch the plane back to BKK. I'm glad that they have a few more upmarket eateries. (FWIW, Laos people DO grasp road rules - I can't say the same of folk in Phnom Penh - other than 'give way to the largest vehicle', it's bedlam)

Laos is a charming small country. It's not big like Tokyo, Japan. But they have French colonial towns of Luang Prabang. Hot air balloon rides by a French company called Above Laos. Don't forget to try Lao Indian roti in Luang Prabang. There are very small Indian community living in there. Indian Prime Minister Modi visited Indians in Laos last month for ASEAN meeting.

I would guess most people drive awd/ 4x4 vehicles because Laos has a lot of bad roads, especially in rural areas. My relatives warned me of safety hazards driving to rural cities. I've only driven in 2 slight rural villages in Laos.

Vientiane is being overran by chinese settlers - the side of town towards the airport, and the old that luang marsh area are basically chinese settlements now.
