Vientiane, Laos: Our First Impressions

Today we share our first 24 hours in Vientiane, Laos! We ate some local cuisine, stopped by one of Vientiane's most famous landmarks, and checked out the night markets by the edge of the Mekong. We were surprised by the relaxed, laidback atmosphere - Thanks for stopping by, we can't wait to share more of our Laos adventures with you next time!

The traditional lao noodles are actually not traditional. It's a noodle version of papaya salad, lao style aka pa dak or fermented fish. Usually, you would have eaten it with meat or add lettuce. Im glad you both tried it.

I give you guys a thumbs up for giving those noodles more than one chance. Traditionally Lao people get them spicy or extra spicy to balance out the fishy taste. There is no better way to enjoy fermented fish sauce (padek) without lots of peppers.

Loa people comes out really early for the morning market then they normally go back to the house to hide out from the sun or they go to work. They normally come back out when the sun goes down to socialize. Most Lao traditional dishes used fermented fish sauce so the taste and smell will be too strong for most foreigners. Most Lao people will also call the highest prices because they're expecting their customers to bargain. For example; if they're saying $10, you should be negotiating for $2.50.

I just discovered your videos! I love Lao food! Just FYI, fish sauce will be in most dishes lol try to get use to it. Most southeast Asian countries use fish sauce lol

The balut is nice and young. Usually, when you buy them from the market, you can ask how old the eggs are: how many days. They usually would have a few "age" ranges in different baskets. This is nice because it's younger, the head, body, legs, body, feet are not formed yet. That's perfect. I can't eat the "fully formed" duck egg. But, they didn't bother to tell you to get some salt and pepper and even herbs to diffuse the idea and not get gagged and throw up. One normally eats a boiled egg with salt and pepper, no?

Thum Khao Poon uses the same sauce as papaya salad. Alot of "salads" can be made with the same sauce.

I think you just got introduced to something called "pa-daak" which is fermented fish with that noodle dish. It can be over powering and pungent. Don't worry, I'm Lao and I hate it too. 😄

You need to pronounce it correctly it is ViengChen, but it spell Vientiane so the T in tian should sounds CH

Although we agree that 'ch' would be more accurate, we researched this for some time prior to arriving and decided to use a pronunciation we felt our global audience would be more familiar with. We also anglicize other city names in our vlog for the same purpose (even in our own countries - i.e. Seoul), but we always appreciate comments like this so others can learn as well 😊 Thank you!
