I am a Japanese viewer and have been enjoying the videos on your channel for about six months now. I love your critical perspective on Japan, your sarcastic humor in conveying it, and your concise, unbiased video structure. I think your channel is one of those rare channels where both a critical perspective and a love of Japanese culture exist, and where information is not simply used as attention-grabbing content. Thanks for always finding so many good things and improvements about Japan! I have learned many things from you that I would not have noticed if I had just lived in Tokyo, such as how Japan looks and how Japan is misaligned from a foreigner's point of view. Also, from you I became aware of the existence of trash taste, and from there I became even more aware of the existence of Daidus and Emirichu, all of which gave me a lot more enjoyment. Thanks for the charity bike ride with Connor! Many problems remain, such as excessive interrogation of foreigners by Japanese police officers, Harsh working conditions, refusal to rent apartments, and refusal to allow foreigners to enter Japan, but I sincerely hope that the situation can be improved to be more comfortable for foreigners.🙏

I'm really glad I got to visit Japan in 2015. I distinctly remembering wandering Kyoto on my own, Being drawn by a temple tower with many rooftops, and while walking there, saw a tiny restaurant. ABSOLUTELY do a Christmas Carol! Seeing you produce higher budget projects for something like Netflix and BBC would be amazing too (Your work on KZbin is already higher quality than most of what I see already). I just hope that they collab with you more than just taking control away from you, and that you continue KZbin either way too. Also, I love that you are working hard to get healthy. Not that I'm losing sleep wondering if you are fit or anything, but I personally do enjoy watching videos that incorporate something health related (i.e. watching you bike across Japan). I like to push myself and so I'm more inspired when I see that extra effort. Makes videos have a sense of growth mixed in. Also also, hearing you bring up questions you are never asked involving things like philosophy, would you ever do some videos about just that and/or favorite books or anything? I get it would probably not do as well, but maybe if they had less editing and if they were on your other channel... idk, I'm interested myself is all lol.

I can't think of any western tourists under 60 wanting to be in a tour group. Only people I can think that actually use a lot of guided tours worldwide are generally Chinese tourists who spend a lot of money and generally always just get bused around with a guide. Even here in the US in a very touristy city I won't name, the local mall hired bilingual sales associates in places like Louis Vuitton, Coach, Tiffany's 'cause the buses would specifically stop by the mall and about 100 Chinese tourists would get off and shop till they drop.

There's no legitimate reason for the tourism ban. And yes, I realize that "guided tours" and tours booked through tour agencies are "allowed," but in practice, tourism is still banned. I rarely comment on these but I just wanted to chip in and say that you really should be proud of your drone work! It does an excellent job of getting across the landscape in these places in ways that the intensely close and human-scale videography doesn't show. Humans don't live in the narrow gaze of a fixed camera; our eyes drift, our heads swivel, etc. That's made your drone work the most exceptional part of the Journey Across Japan videos, because they give a wider perspective and let you get more of a "feel" for the area. So, y'know, please feel proud! You do good stuff.

I love your“Rocky” montage at the end. I’m glad you’re prioritising your well-being. Nothing is more important! I’m 42 now, so my 30s are over but still close enough to be vivid in my memory. I literally lost count of how many times I almost died during my 30s, so don’t panic, and keep looking after yourself. I really do mean that, Chris. I almost bled to death hundreds of times, permanently lost the use of a lung and had pneumonia 4 times in the one I do have. I had endometriosis so badly that I ruptured my left ovary and then ended up with sepsis and multiple organ failure. I barely recovered from that ordeal only to repeated it all over again when my right ovary ruptured too 6 weeks later! I had been cursed with these sorts of problems since the age of 11, so at 37 I had the operation that frankly saved my life: a radical hysterectomy. That means no reproductive organs are left. There’s much more that I could mention (repeatedly breaking & dislocating things etc) but that list will suffice. So, you see, Chris, if I can live through all that kind of grief, remain self employed throughout and still have a sense of humour, you can too. Best of luck with everything! ❤️

The tourism thing is so deflating. The nonsense that you are required to have A GUIDED TOUR or schedule through a travel agency who plans out all your shit is so prohibitive to me as I do not like structure of that kind and being dragged around by some stranger or forced to stick to a schedule is not relaxing, especially since the people involved would be those that I just met. It is not ideal for someone who lives relatively spontaneously. It's like the Japanese government has no idea what "tourism" actually is in this day and age. In short: fuck guided tours and travel agencies.

I was "lucky" enough to get engaged to my Japanese partner right before the lockdowns. Went back to my country for work and they essentially pulled up the drawbridge and locked the gate behind me. We have just successfully gotten married in Japan despite me not being physically in the country for almost 3 years. Now waiting for approval of my partner visa. Expensive process and a shame we couldn't be in the same country let alone room on the day of my marriage. But even sadder for the separated couples who aren't ready for marriage.

On fitness: I started really focusing on my health and fitness starting in my early 30s. I'm 39 now, and in this best shape of my life. I think the best advice is to remain consistent and to set attainable goals that allow you to maintain that consistency. Cycling across Japan/Hokkaido is awesome and makes for good content, but I don't think those kinds of large activities need to be the whole focus. Just doing any kind of exercise for 30 minutes a day will allow anyone to work toward better health.

Yeah and cardio is never the best way! Too much of my body torn up from it to know that much and other health issues (genetics, prematurity, injury) to know this full well and I am the daughter of a family medicine doctor. On top of that I am literally 2 days older than him (4/19/1990 for me and he and the Queen as he always points out 4/21 and 1990 for him too). I have already had my shoulders and back thrown out (one of Connor's cousins a true gorilla of a massage therapist dislocated one shoulder, thankfully not my dominant one and twisted the hell outta the other)! I was left two years right handed with added neuropathy 5 days prior to the massage incident due to a phlebotomist going for nerves. (It was PT massage and electrotherapy was prior and I knew my back and arms were in dire need of stimulus and risked it one of the massage therapists had better Spanish than English but ultimately didn't care if you said no services which is pretty much same in both)! I broke my left leg and have had arthritis since my teens. I even know enough due to own upper body errors with instructors the heavy ropes always look cool but do nothing and add strain. I am a similar build but 5'2 and 190lbs (158cm and about 74kg) and his trips have actually fueled my desire to help get back. Also, not finding the right place has always stalled it.

I've been watching your videos for many years and it makes me so happy that your sense of humor hasn't changed, and over the years all that's changed about your channel is the production quality getting better and better. I think the first video of yours I watched was "how to move to and work in Japan". I went to Japan when I was 13 and absolutely loved it, I always wanted to go back. I ended up moving to Taiwan, but there was always something very comforting about having the same person that got me thinking about living in Asia, being a few steps ahead of me, posting entertaining videos about life in Asia from the other side of a pond. Taiwan and Japan are more similar than I imagined, in a good way. I'll be coming to Japan for the first time since then next year hopefully, if the council of Japanese elders deem it wise to properly re-open Japan. P.S. you should start doing more workout videos because like you I'm getting 'broad' 🤣
