NOTIFICATION SQUAD: Take a shot every time someone compares a single room to the size of their apartment. So what's the verdict? Good value for money given the private roof oasis and location in the heart of Harajuku? Or simply overpriced mayhem? A HUGE thanks to Alex for showing us around - if you want to explore the amazing properties on his website check out: i-home.tokyo Feel free to drop him a line if you have any questions about moving to Tokyo! - And as for me, it's back to the ironing board.

Don't forget if you're spending that kind of money to own a place like this you're not going to clean it yourself. That means you're going to have to hire somebody to clean it for you at least once a day. That's likely an additional 3,000 a month.

honestly this place looks like a dump for 20,000 a month. There are penthouse apartments for sale in Japan for 2-3 million that are WAY nicer with newer amenities. 20,000x 16 years is 4 million. You could get a MUCH better loan on 2-3 million and pay a mortgage on a better penthouse than renting this crap box.

remember, it's Japan, inside the city limits of Tokyo... the SINGLE MOST DENSELY POPULATED URBAN ENVIRONMENT ON PLANET EARTH. period. full stop. no questions asked. no variables needed. it has more people per square kilometre of land than any other urban area on the planet. having an open cityscape view 360 degrees around the WHOLE apartment? every single window shown of the exterior of the apartment, since it's on the top floor... there's NO high rise buildings immediately right next door to the apartment building. that is a SERIOUSLY primo high Dollar $$ view in Tokyo.

@@NeonShadowsx cool, thanks for replying. i guess my info was more than a decade out of date. my ex GF in the 2000's was a US Embassy worker's kid in Tokyo. i don't remember when she lived there, exactly. i remember it was more than a decade in length since she said she even went to HighSchool there and Tokyo U for 9 months. then her dad left the US State Dept. Foreign Services Division for 'home service' here in the States. plus i got the national density mixed up with the city in Tokyo. the 'urban footprint' city of Tokyo person per square kilometre is the highest in Japan! my bad i fucked that one up vs world stats. oops. :( 6,264 persons per square k Paris by the way, 21,000 persons per square k... yes i can do the research. bla bla bla. but you know what, Paris is rather shitty because the city itself is 12,012 square kilometres where Tokyo is 13,555 so over a square k bigger in size. that and i find Paris personally crap. it's insane to navigate. since i didn't speak French fluently every Parisian i interacted with treated me like shit. Google Translate talking out of my phone WOULD have helped, but not much. the taxi situations in Paris were a nightmare. i lost my ass using my credit card in Paris taxis. of course i traveled for pleasure/business there before the EU was formed so. shrug. my situation is very out of date. back then i found Heathrow a lot nicer than the city of Paris, but i didn't leave the airport in London. layover wasn't long enough to bother on that trip. i enjoyed Berlin more than Paris on that trip. the Germans bent over fucking backwards once they found out my nein was almost all i had. seriously, a damn McDonalds' kid in Berlin got 2 other employees who combined had enough English to help me order in German. the Parisians? i got told to 'fuck off American' in every store. even McDonalds in Paris gave me a stink eye. and i can fucking count to three in French and German. so asking for a #1 wasn't that hard in either city. Tokyo on the other hand is a public commuters' wet dream. nigh on 4 years ago old college buddy was there for fun. he downloaded the uhh oh god what was the company's name... Lobster Card? anways, he didn't even need cash, or a credit card, or anything, he set up the phone as a 'swipe' for trains in Tokyo for a week's duration. he typed in/set up 'i'm here, going here' the app did everything. it took GPS location, showed how to walk to the nearest station, how to navigate INSIDE the station, where to swipe the phone, what the trip would cost, where transfers were, up to date by the minute arrivals and departures, if you wanted to arrive somewheres by a certain time from a certain location it could tell you that too. it even told which side of the train to stand on for exit! :o damn app was like HAL from 2001 Space Odyssey. BTW, my ex is working her way up the Honda North American corporate ladder angling for a posting inside Japan before 2030. since she's still fluently bilingual.

@@LittleChell94 that's because the kinds of people that live in places like this dont do things like that. Like cook and clean @mezz a lot of Japanese building is like that. Even as an american I find their lack of....wall and window odd. Not enough insulation, not enough panes of glass, etc. But on the whole, especially with houses. They view construction as somewhat temporary and not an investment. It's very common for a house older than 30 years to not really be considered in the price of a real estate purchase as it's just going to be torn down. Excepting the surviving pre WW2 construction. A lot of the above has to do with classical Japanese construction techniques (wood and paper) and disasters. In 30 years the buildings after multille earthquakes reallyas sound as they should be and aren't up to the latest design codes. So might as well tear them down.

"Very rare for Japan, this is dual pane glass" ... sound very odd coming from a place in Europe where 3-pane windows have become the norm for new buildings. I haven't seen a single-pane window in any but the oldest buildings.

Its about room temperature, tokyo is not hokkaido and also a window instead a wall makes it rare.

I've been living and working in Japan for almost 4 years, and my apartment has single-pane windows. Most house and apartments in Japan don't have double-pane windows. They also don't have any rubber or seal around doors or windows. I can feel the wind because there's a gap between the sliding window in my bedroom. There's also a gap all around my main door. You can see the light from outside. Because of the lack of insulation, my apartment kitchen goes up to 40°C in summer and down to ~6-10°C during winter (the water leaking from my old freezer used to freeze during winter).

Housing is actually the only thing I found expensive in Japan. Restaurants, booze, cabs, entertainment, hotels and of course anything electronic were all cheaper than where I live. Ideal holiday destination, in other words, and it's totally unique. There's only one Japan and that's Japan.

@Miss reign Too many people, not enough land. Further exacerbated by the fact Japan is very mountainous which limits land availability even further.

@@idanceforpennies281 it may become a bit cheaper down the track due to the shrinking population. If working from home in Japan keeps gaining momentum it may also lead to the population becoming more spread out.

I can't imagine living there... Like, not even considering the price, that is just so many windows. How am I supposed to lean anything against the Not Wall. What if someone wants to hang some art or posters. How often do you have (to probably call someone) to clean the windows? Who has time to maintain a garden if you're a rich diplomat? Are you going to let the peasantry into your home to do it for you? Preposterous!
