There is another thing: Musculus Psoas Major & Musculus Iliacus (known as Musculus Iliopsoas). They bend the hips, so every leg raise, or crunch that levels up your lower back from the floor, or Abs-Machine works them. And they are located behind your guts (one of the few muscles you don't see from the outside), so when they grow they push your guts in front. I really believe that's the main reason for the pregnancy problem. I think training them + growth hormones makes them too big

Ric could you do a video on alcohol and smoking. I know Arnold smokes cigars and a few other pros like their drink, but how does it fit into a healthy lifestyle and bodybuilding in your opinion? I'm 4 weeks alcohol free and 6 months cigarette free and your videos help a lot with motivation to stay away from it, but I'm curious how many of the guys in the 70's/80's period smoked or drank alcohol.
@albussd
@albussd 8 жыл бұрын
These habits do NOT fit into a healthy lifestyle at all. But ppl still do it. Arnold and other pros drunk and smoke cos they like it..not cos they are concerned for their health. If they had been concerned, they wouldn't have meddled with steroids in the first place. Many ppl follow these pros completely and by that, I mean even these harmful habits. Bad idea. Better stay away. Also, it seems that there are always exceptions who drink and smoke but still live long. I personally wouldn't want to rest the fate of my health on some exceptions.

@@albussd I know that Jason Huh always said guys who smoke weed have trouble appearing as hard on stage but Gregg Doucette uses THC to sleep during contest prep and that guy gets peeled so who really knows. maybe it has something to do with smoking it

So true, i just quit doing direct abs work.. my abs grow just by doing heavy dumbbells rows for reps but i put the free hand on the bar on my home squat rack when i rows with the other hand, that isometricly make my abs stronger and biger.. and just by doing that my abs grow.. but i won`t stop doing this kind of rows because of balance, i love to press big weights and that help me a lot.

At present I want my core bigger and stronger for powerlifting progress. I do weighted decline sit ups and then ensure I'm getting in enough belt less squats and deadlifts. Also lying on the ground leg raises with side to side ball bounces . My hips are small for my size though. My goals are different I guess

Was sure different in the 60's and 70's. Even big city gyms were basic compared to today. And some guys (with titles even) got good physiques far more by chance and genetics than anything else. One said to me that he achieved his ripped condition from large amounts of protein which he got from eating loads of oranges!!!! No kidding. Well in my 70's now but still train light. Regard weights as the ace of methods to stay fit. I am just amazed how it is all so brilliantly organised for youngsters these days. Just stay away from the drugs. They bugger up too many good people in lots of sports. Huge is just a dream in a very confined bubble and can look stupid in the street, be very movement restrictive and cost a fortune in food.

Hey Rick ! Love Your channel and love the Bodybuilding of 70s ! I personally train and learn from your Generation ! Here on this topic i dont agree. I made Incredible ABS with really high reps and Supersetting with 9 Different Exercises. Made Vacuum every single morning and my Abs and Waist stayed small, in the mean while my Chest kept growing.

I train my abs like any other muscle because they have always been really small (I have a tiny waist in addition to naturally small abs). They weren't visible when I was very skinny 7% bf before I started lifting although I have sunken cheeks and ripped shoulders. It is good to have small abs but it definitely prevents me to perform certain movements because my abs aren't strong enough so I train them. Depends on individually genetics I guess, if your calves are big then training them frequently are gonna make them more disproportionate.

Another muscle you don't want to train: musculus iliopsoas (m. iliacus + m. psoas major). They are located behind your guts, and can grow really big so that they push your guts in front. So don't do leg raises ;)

The reason why I would not do rotating ab exercises is because it can hurt the spinal discs. The worst thing you can do for your spine is to rotate it sideways. Even regular abs can irritate injuries. I do weighted reverse crunches after recovering from a herniated disc and it's still quite frankly scary to me.
@folksurvival

That's better than nothing but there's no progressive resistance involved. I think it can be very good for maintaining function and tone at Ric's age but that's about it. I think that ab training is the last sanctuary of broscience. I want someone to show me a bodybuilder with an ugly huge waist from progressively loading his abs. Until then I believe abs need to be worked like every other muscle, which is uncomfortable and potentially dangerous so we would rather make excuses for not doing it.

I need help. i have 210 lbs. But i eat normal 250 grams proteins and 350 grams carbs. Because i am asking i got really good abs but i was fat in history and my skin is not so nice.... but i had 310 lbs.... now i want to have abs.. i have 8 of them but i can see only 4. But still i got fat. Problem is if i go lower carbs i am getting low sugar level. BEfore i had no problem with sugar until i get fatter. Now i still have problems. I need to eat apple every 3 4 hours and banana. To have normal sugar level.
