Las Piñas' Jeepney | Local Legends

"Local Legends" introduces Alejandro Bangcaya, a long-time jeepney mechanic of Sarao Motors. The program learns how long Bangcaya has been making propellers for Sarao jeepneys. Bangcaya then explains in great detail the process of making jeepneys. Sarao Motors production manager Edgardo Sarao recalls when the company was forced to halt production and downsize its employees due to rising costs. Sarao and Bangcaya's colleagues also commend the old mechanic’s work ethic and skills in making jeepney propellers.

I am proud of being "Batang Sarao", wala pa ako sa mundo nagta-trabaho na lolo ko, mga tito ko at papa ko jan. Ngayon na nasa ibang bansa na ako at nagka-anak, they are still working there and they're all loyal employee of Sarao no matter what. I am so proud of my family kasi nakapag tapos kami magpipinsan dahil sa Sarao. Naalala ko nung bata pa ko, lahat ng empleyado jan tito ko at nagmamano ako sa knilang lahat. Hahaha. Just by sitting in a Jeepney in motion and having his feet on the floor, Mr. Alejandro Bangcaya can perform DIAGNOSTICS on the propeller/shaft that he had assembled and installed. What an amazing skill! He knows if something is wrong based on his hearing and feeling when he is on board on a test drive.

As someone inclined with machinery, fabrication and crafts, I have mad respect for these! Specific crafts and roles, self taught lathe operator, machining drive shafts with a piece of metal as an indicator etc The talent, the skill, the experience, the expertise, the passion, ITS INTENSE! Ang R & D natin mejo outdated na, yung sinasabi ni tatay na parang "kinikiliti" sa english ay vibrations. Ang lahat ng piyesa ng makina na umiikot sa matataas na RPM, at numero uno gulong at ung rim (wheels) sa mga high tech na manufactures ay binabalanse yun. Kapag may density difference, kino correct sa paglagay ng mga pabigat. Sa gulong, rim at propellers nakakita ako nun. Sa opinyon ko lang ha, wala tayong evolution of quality, meaning hindi tayo nag advance ng mga engineering techniques. Lalo na sa jeep, kita nyo, ung upuan na lang sa driver, wala standard measurement at wala adjustment ung mga upuan. Bihira ako nakakakita ng mga gauges at dials na gumagana, especially ung sa fuel gauge. Pero meron ilan na unique sa atin tulad nung mga air brakes na adapted sa mga jeep natin. Kung hindi lang naudlot ung development nung mga unang sasakyan nung 1970s at 1980s na Pinoy 1 & 2 Harabas, Cimaron, Ford Fiera, malamang nag improve na tayo at baka nauna pa tayo sa TATA ng India.
