It seems that while the UK can charge them, the Church is committed to protecting to protecting its own, and its reputation, rather than complying with the law - not that pdf files are treated particularly harshly by the courts (which begs several questions of its own)- and is intent on circumventing justice. The weird thing is Welby, who became Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013, commissioned an independent review by Dame Moira Gibb in 2016 to deal with the systematic failing of the Church, under George Carey's term as Archbishop of Canterbury, in handling of Peter Ball's (Bishop of Lewes and later of Gloucester) sexual abuse case. Peter Ball got 32 months, he admitted the abuse of 18 young men aged 17-25.

Welby stood by as Reverend Dr Bernard Randall was sacked and disgraced for preaching a moderate sermon on LGBTQ issues. It is justice that he now suffers the loss of his own job and disgrace. The difference between Reverend Dr Randall and Welby is that Dr Randall did nothing. Absolutely nothing in anyway causative of his punishment. Welby, on the other hand, may well deserve this outcome. I hope Welby’s current predicament is sufficient to make him reconsider his allegiances.

There is a duty of care regarding safeguarding. This needs investigating and rigorous enforcement to ensure an example is set. Huw Edwards got away with it pleading personal shame. Personal shame of the Archbishop of Canterbury - it is shame of being caught out. He had no shame beforehand and was prepared to parade in his robes and Crown the King and take his Honour from the King whilst under a cloud of shame? I do not think so. And another man in priest's robes saying he is proud of him for resigning??? That is outrageous.
