Most UN Peacekeeping forces can provide or could've provided some serious protection if it wasn't for bureaucratic bullshit, international backroom deals, political backstabbing and logistical tampering. Its just easier to get a discreet independent third party, like mercenaries, to do the hard work in order to avoid the red tape, endless reports and a quick replacement of your position.

My uncle was in Kosovo as a UN peacekeeper and it ended up giving him PTSD, he would never give many details, but some of the things he said was for instance they would drive up to a battle in their APC's and then they would basically be forced to watch people killing each other. As they were told they weren't allowed to interfere in any way, not even warning shots or trying to get the wounded away, except in some cases where the battle was over, of course they weren't allowed to drive away either for some reason.

The cache likely had heavy equipment that you cannot legally bring in without it staying with customs as it goes beyond what you are expected to need to provide personnel or site security. So mortars, anti-vehicle equipment designed to target tanks and other military vehicles, and a large amount of extra rounds and small arms... Probably just enough to outfit a platoon sized group for a short-medium term though. They likely still had to deal with BMPs, Helicopter, and tanks as well as getting past entrenched positions without air support so mortars were needed
