This and Superman for All Seasons are two of my three most wanted Absolutes. The third is Wild Cats if DC ever reprints it. Love this story and going to have to put a paycheck aside for this one.

One other thing about the 2 fingers that might be lost on Americans, is that in UK the '2 finger salute' means F**k Off, it's been a symbol of defiance for hundreds of years. I first read V in Warrior Magazine as it was coming out when I was 22 (yeah I'm that old) I prefer Moore's England based stories, V, Miracleman, Captain Britain, LEXG, From Hell and The Bojeffries saga. I like the USA based stuff too, just not as much, I loved V right from the start and luckily didn't have to wait as long as I did for Miraclman to read the complete story.

I'm glad you liked the story a lot more this time, since I remember you saying not too long ago that you weren't a big fan of this book. I may be an Alan Moore apologist, but I love it.

I had this book on my wish list to purchase. The week it was released as I normally do, I search the omnibus, mmw, and absolute category prior to checking out just in case a deal catches my eye. To my amazement, not only were they selling the 2023 printing but the 2009 version and for 20 some dollars less. I didn't hesitate to pick the 2009 version. Why? Because I'm cheap! After watching this, I hope I don't regret that decision with the binding issue you mention. I had a trade ppb edition that I purchased used at thrift years ago, and I can attest 100% that the quality of the artwork sucked. It was like reading an old newspaper comic strip with zero production value that made enjoying that book a hard pill to swallow. The absolute is amazing, so to anyone that is in doubt, please do not hesitate to purchase one to add to your library. The story is more relevant these days in our turbulent political climate. I have been looking forward to your video, Omar, and as usual, you did not disappoint.

The ideas that encompass Moore’s “V For Vendetta” have always been topical in human societies, and there is an argument to be made that Alan Moore’s bibliography will always remain timeless.

I never got the point that 3 of the 5 finger men got blown up at the beginning to make a V. Now I am curious how many other hidden messages, Easter eggs, I missed. I have reread this about 5 times. I love it so much. It is VERY dark in tone but that darkness is offset (for me) by the whimsical nature of V himself. It was a brilliant idea to have that as a counterpoint. If you had a dark, brooding hero then it would have been too much. Thank you, Omar, for your thoughts on the story. This absolute edition looks gorgeous.

Excellent review of a comic book classic. Up there with Watchmen IMO. Being in my early 20’s in Britain during the 80’s, I can understand Alan Moore’s influences/references based on the right wing Thatcher government of the time. It was also this book that gave me a different insight into Guy Fawkes. A stunning piece of work that makes you think about government, control and our ever decreasing lack of free speech

Man I gotta get one of these V was one of my first comics. I heard all the talk about Watchmen and couldn't get a copy (I think it was the big blue dongs) but I managed to get my hands of one of these and it was....dull. I flipped past pages, my eyes glazed over. I got the story, somewhat, but it did nothing for me. Too many words, too much muddy art, I wanted batfists and colorful villains as a teenager, not a philosophy lesson. But I never got rid of the book. Years later I actually sat down and "read" watchmen, and Swamp Thing and I'm like damn this dudes a wizard, I need to read everything I can by him. And I stumbled over V again. Neglected, ignored, and written off. But now, with readers eyes and more of an understanding of Moore (and especially how he frames story structures) this truly started to shine as one of his most tight and emotional story. THIS is what a "political" comic should be, and it's not even a real world side or topic. It's just like Orwell, a good warning to those with open eyes, and a beautiful love letter to anarchy

I got to your review, and you nailed it, almost eerie how similar our experiences have been with these stories, it was 8th and 9th grade for V and Watchmen respectively for me as well, despite us being a decade and a half apart in age 🤣

This is an Absolute I have always wanted to get my hands on but the price tag has always put me off, it’s so expensive for what it is in comparison to other absolute editions with the same page count. To put it into perspective, a bought 2 Absolute Sandman for the price Absolute V for Vendetta is going for and as you know, the Absolute Sandman collection are far superior books. If it was a third the price I would say that was reasonable, I would pay 50 max. As for the story itself, those who have come from socialist states know this story all too well, they or their ancestors went through this kind of world. I went to school with many kids who were from different countries who lived through it or escaped it. We had a lot of Russian orphans and I was about 10, it was at the fall of the USSR and when they came it still sticks with me to this day, I can still picture it to this day, it haunts me and it was their eyes, they weren’t eyes of a child, not a child I had ever been in contact with before and as a child I didn’t understand it but it had an instant effect on me, now as an adult I understand it, it was the eyes of kids who had had no childhood, all those eyes had seen was pain and suffering, they had seen and experienced things no child should ever see or experience. It made me learn about certain things and it made me an “anarchist” I rebelled against authority but mellowed as I got older but I still have that resolute attitude when it comes to being told what to do or think and I that people should be treated as individuals and I am still very much anti collectivism and putting people into certain categories based on immutable characteristics and reading V for Vendetta reminded me of those Russian orphans as a child and the parallels and sadly I feel that in the west we are seeing certain aspects of the themes in that story playing out in real life and that worries me because I have seen the result of it in those eyes that still haunt me to this day like an ever lasting warning

Maybe I’m a little too picky but I’ve been waiting on a recolored version of this for ages. Love the story but have yet to own it for this very reason. If they did a recoloring similar to the absolute swamp thing by alan moore I’d have bought this a long time ago.

The right age was when DC published it in 1988. I was 22. It can definitely be appreciated at that age. But it has a European sensitivity rather than an American one. People rarely think of Alan Moore or British writers as European writers but they should.

Pretty sure every chapter begins with the letter V. [not just the first ones] the story suffers because it was written for serialization in... 10? page increments. also because Moore doesn't usually give his artists rooms to breathe, his panel design tends towards many per page. this makes the story dense and a bit claustrophobic, and i suspect these are a big reason Omar was tuned off before. it's not a comic that lets you in easily. having said that, the story alone is strong enough to make it in my top 3 Moore comics, hence my youtube name. it is political, it can easily be applied to current politics. i will note that the issue of who all the villains are is important, and since i don't want to spoil anything i will say this issue heavily informs the ending and also the question of anarchy versus fascism. it's also interesting to compare this to Preacher, which Omar just reviewed a new release of. they both address some of the same issues. i think most folks-and i might be wrong- would find Preacher more disturbing and anti-establishment. but i think it's only superficially so. V is darker and more disturbing, but on a less obvious level. it is not a superhero comic, it is not an easy comic, it is something you'll wanna read if you like more political, complex works. i will also say one more thing, and folks here might disagree- the movie was better. because [1] the visuals had more space to breath, and [2] Moore sometimes has issues making things emotionally resonate. the film format is better at doing that. one final technical note, Omar said the film was by the Wachowski Brothers [now sisters i suppose]. they only produced it, they had someone else direct it, tho he did tend to mimic their style.

I glossed over this one years ago and left it at that. I've already ordered me a copy. I think this book hits more now because of what we see around us. People being sent to "re-education camps" in this age because they contradict certain authorities makes my stomach churn. Whether I agree with the person saying something or not, it feels too much like Nazi Germany for my taste with certain government actions.

i'm ok with the color. Llyod wasn't experimenting with form and shadow the way Miller did in Sin City, he was simply drawing for a black and white magazine. for me, what it loses with the addition of color is canceled out by what it gains.
