The issue didn’t feel like her writing and that might be the best thing going forward.

This is my first time reading a WW comic, and as a pretty casual reader, I went in with no expectations-especially since everyone seems to say Kelly’s work isn’t great. I stick to a monthly comics budget, and WW went from a one-time buy to an ongoing series for me. Ended up dropping Absolute Batman, which is wild, but I'll probably pick it up in trade later.

nice!

It is obvious that Kelly Thompson has read and been inspired by Joseph Campbell’s “Heroes with Thousand Faces” to flesh out the character of Absolute WW. It is a very unique take, and psychologically profound. Bravo to her!

I like the new origin story for Wonder Woman... I don't like the interior art and the design of her horse is kind of undesirable to me 🤣😂

Great podcast! I must have missed the absolute batman one. Kelly Thompson said the book would be "organically feminist". I watched the interview where she said it, and knew that people would latch onto it in a negative way. I can't blame people for being skeptical (I was too) but I am glad that the book is not "women good" and "men bad" or something, and it sounds like what she said may actually be a good thing and what I would want to see in a WW book. I am still waiting for my copy in the mail but I am looking forward to reading it now.

I think you’ve added in a lot of stuff you are supposing is there, but isn’t actually there. Just my opinion. I think finding the look not feeling like Wonder Woman is a disconnect for me. I don’t connect with the sword or the tats. How did she get all the Amazon mojo just from the word?
@WeirdScienceComicsКүн бұрын
it's more magic mojo she learned from Circe

@@WeirdScienceComics At her core I think Diana’s defining aspect is her representation of the Amazons’ philosophy…how does she get that without being raised in the culture? I get this is a different Diana, but it’s implied she now understands what the Amazons stood for. But how? That’s what I think is missing and why it comes off as superficial. The magic mojo isn’t enough. Does she really represent the Amazonian philosophy or is it just words…because from Thompson I’d expect just words. I think this would make a better original character for an ongoing series than a Wonder Woman variant.

@@matthewlloyd5130 She just knows that the Amazons protected the world - i never got that she represents anything yet - she went to the "upper world" to find out what she can imo - she just knows what little she was told but still says she is the Daughter of Circe as a main thing. the things like compassion are just her, not Amazonian per se. I think a lot of people are dismissing this book just because it's Kelly Thompson - I'm not going to assume she is messing anything up until I see it happen

@ That’s where I get the superficial quality of the issue. It hangs it’s hat on the look and the concept and doesn’t attempt to develop anything of substance. I know this Absolute line isn’t for me and that’s ok, but unfortunately I’m still compelled to share an opinion. But since when have Amazons been protectors of Man’s World? They were isolated for thousands of years and Diana’s mission to Man’s World was to be an ambassador of their culture. That’s the first time they were involved for years. I just think the core of the character is gone. Are people dismissing it because it’s Thompson? Or is it just not as appealing? Surprised how good Absolute Superman is…best of the 3 IMO.

The premise of Diana as a dark daughter of witchcraft and literal Hell is so anathema to the most foundational components of the character that I have zero interest just out of respect to the Wonder Woman ethos, but I appreciate the detailed review since I'm never going to read it :)
@WeirdScienceComics2 күн бұрын
@@danalvin1184 that premise is forced on her - she is taken from the amazon’s (who are i prisoned) and forced to be raised in hell and even then, her love and compassion win over everyone and everything and she literally turns her little part of hell into a paradise! It is 20000000% respectful to the foundational components of wonder woman and shows that no matter what, you can’t change those components!

Jim is 100% on point here and I feel like the advertising missed the boat a bit here by framing this as an inversion of typical diana which may turn off wonder woman fans when it really isn't.
@matthewlloyd5130Күн бұрын
I’m pretty close to this also. It’s not really Wonder Woman, it’s a new character with the name.

The dialog literally read to me like a Hallmark movie. Her ideas are fine but man the people dont talk like people. "Fall in love with someone by raising them" is like nails on a chalkboard.
@matthewlloyd5130Күн бұрын
Her writing is very superficial. It lacks any real substance.

Very meh. Not enough hook and just not a compelling change or look.
