I agree. It's impressive. My mother is a hoarder and I grew up in a really dirty/hoarded home. I didn't really have the patience for it, but saying that I put up with it for years and years before it finally rubbed me the wrong way. It was around puberty I started to lose my temper with her. Probably because it was so embarrassing bringing home boyfriends and friends. So embarrassing. So yes, my point is that it really takes a patient, strong person to deal with a hoarder. They are probably the most frustrating people to deal with on the planet. Moving out was one of the best days of my life and my homes have been spotless ever since. Same with my sister. So fair play.

I’m amazed at how polite and tolerant the people that Jasmine has worked with! Here in the USA we have so so many people who scream, throw fits are so rude and are just plain nasty! But in Britain everyone is so so different! I think it’s so sweet and awesome what Jasmine is doing to help others and how long she works with them! Plus all the professional help that she has brought to the people is just remarkable!!

The Hoarder shows in the US most all depict crisis interventions where the hoarder has been reported by their neighbors, threatened with adult protective or even child protective services, are in trouble with city code enforcement related to vermin infestations or fire hazard situations and as such have a deadline to fix everything or be forced to vacate and have their home condemned. Therefore they are overwhelmed, not mentally prepared for the forced cleanup and you see raw emotions erupt. Their therapy occurs after the cleanup (aftercare) unless they decline it…and some do decline it. I have rarely seen any of the U.K. shows depict a forced cleanup by the authorities. The cleanups are a suggestion, a voluntary situation where the hoarder is in charge.

Notice some things about the approach taken here. They do not put excessive pressure on the hoarders, they do not bring in huge clean up crews or give someone very limited control, they respect the hoarder's choices and take time to understand the hoarder as a person. They combine therapy with slow work and compassion. It's no wonder the American hoarders act so defensive and distressed. They are experiencing trauma for people's entertainment.

If the people in this show had that much pressure on them and faced homelessness, they would exhibit the same behaviours as the American show. Tbh these people are so lucky they still have anyone that wants to help them as theyv'e simple chose "stuff" over their own family and even children

It's possible to get help. There are different approaches, but we found a therapist who works with the book Buried in Treasure. The 2nd edition has worksheets that you can work with a therapist and an organizer. Professional help is needed.

Olive’s cat appears to be happy and in remarkably good health too. Almost all of the pets, especially the cats, that I’ve seen on the shows that feature hoarders here in the US are in poor health and appear malnourished and neglected. It seems like Olive genuinely cares for her pet and also she obviously truly does follow through with her recycling to earn money for charity rather than just using recycling as an empty excuse to hoard. She’s a sweet lady. I hope she was able to find some way to find peace and order in her home.

They generally call in the city and the property owner is given a short time to clean before the home is condemned. Many times adult and child protection are involved before they call the show for help. These are some sad situations. I can't imagine living like that, I grew up with disabled parents so hoarding was an issue, so I am now a minimalist. A couple of my family members went the other way.

Also, the average house in the UK is 818 sq. ft. (76 sq. meters) while the US is 2,200 to 2,400 sq. ft. (202 sq. m. to 222 sq. m. ). This doesn't include the yard area. US yards can be larger. So, one or two ladies wouldn't do for a hoard in the US. A different approach is required. The US hoarder signs a contract previous to the clean-up with the understanding of what to expect. Whether the contract is legal since hoarders are mentally ill is questionable. So they should know what they're getting into. In addition hoarders are manipulative without the intent of fulfilling their end of the agreement. Some just expect a free cleanup as the price can run into six figures. Hoarders lie. They're basically drug addicts not to be trusted. Some are drama actors. US hoarders receive pre and post consultation with psychiatrists and a budget. Some new furniture and a makeover. Don't know what UK hoarder receives. The US hoard is massive compared to the UK. So, a Gordian Knot knot approach is used usually under duress of the hoarder losing their house by code enforcement agencies or having their family broken up. Its a last ditch effort in the shortest amount of time given. Yes the US cleanup compared to the UK approach appears relatively brutal with an eye on the ratings catering to the short attention span and need for staged drama of the average American veiwer. The US cleanup has more resources and production buget. But, there are reasons. Either way the relapse rate of the hoarder going back to hoarding is similiar. Both are tv shows.

They have actually talked about why they only have 4 days to clean out the hoard. The cleaners and stuff have real jobs and families they have to go back to, if they spent a month working with each person they wouldn't be able to have a life.

I'm always awestruck how similar every hoarder is to each other when it comes to throwing away things. The whole "it's good because I bought it"mentality and "I've had it so long, I can't part with it" mentality are so strong in some people. It's fascinating. Most of us are along the lines of "I've had this too long, it's expired, or has outlived it's usefulness, it must go" mentality. I love how calmly everyone is dealing with these aggravating situations.

The tolerance of the accepting, silent, long suffering spouses, endlessly willing to sacrifice their own needs always amazes me. These marriages seem to be matches made in heaven. The rebellious, angry, depressed, acting out children of hoarders are a lot healthier emotionally. At least they express some negative feelings. Such sad stories.

Most of the hoarders end up being at least emotionally abusive to their family members. In cases where they put them in physical danger with their hoarding, the abuse could also be considered neglect and physical abuse. I think that's why so few people have sympathy for hoarders. They're abusers.

There are people in my immediate family who suffer from hoarding tendencies and there are so many judgemental people out there (documentaries included) that just talk it down like they're pack rats and shame the family for not just throwing it all out - if it were that easy, these cases wouldn't happen!

My mother is a hoarder and we have cleaned it out completely 2 times and it's amazing how fast she fills it up again. I emotionally can't do it again. It's definitely an illness and my heart breaks for her.

I did it twice with one friend. She didn’t really want the hoard cleared. She wanted it reorganized and compacted so that she could bring more in. Her home was rehoarded with lightening speed. I gave up. She died in her hoarded home. The irony was that the kinds of things she collected were things to make a beautiful home and to facilitate entertaining family and friends. The hoard made it impossible for her to do either. It was a smelly, filthy, dangerous mess with not one place that a person could sit. No one would ever eat a meal prepared in her house. Very sad.

I want to know what really happened with that 15? 20? year old tin of meat!!!! he claims he ate?? Well he said he opened it and it was fine. He didn’t say he ate it. My first thought was that newer tinned food is made with much thinner metal because manufacturing has improved to be able to make them so much thinner, and the need for everything to be lightweight to save on transportation costs. Also, it’s possible the old can used a higher grade of metal that was less likely than today’s tins to have weak spots that are more susceptible to rust/air/microbe growth.

The hoarders in the US shows are mostly under duress and in crisis mode because they may have been threatened with child or adult protective services; given a deadline by the city due to violating codes for clutter, animal welfare, fire hazard, vermin and/or insect infestation, etc. Because the shows are not the same, I don’t try to compare one with the other. But you are correct, we don’t have to agree.

I love the picture of her parents and a teenaged young Olive. WW2 really destroyed the dreams of so many young men and women of her generation. I don't think Olive ever got over her fiance's war death. If only therapy would have been available then. She might not have ended up a hoarder. It seems like she sort of stepped away from life, as if she put her life on hold for the next 70 years. Very sad.

Weird one tho she wasn't born until 1929 so not sure how she had a fiance in the second world war war? She was only just 16 when it ended.

In Sweden recycling 1 can (like a beer can) can give you 1 kr (0.079 pounds), so if every single can was recycable in the same way here as in the UK she'd been given roughly 10 890 kr (860 pounds) for 165 kg of cans.

My husband was raised by a hoarder and we fight a lot because he won’t clean up after himself or throw things away. I’ve given him an ultimatum- clean up after yourself, put stuff away or get out. He’s doing better. I don’t have to live like that and I’m not going to. He’s finally realizing his brooding huffing and puffing don’t bother me. I will not shut up. I will nag him till he clears everything away or leaves. Either conclusion is fine with me. I just couldn’t live like this. There is no amount of love that could keep me bound up in a mess like this.

This is frustrating to watch , I was a hoarder once. So manny people are helping here , but it might be best to be a little bit harder on them . In The Netherlands we have a saying : Gentle healers make stinking wounds . In the end to manny wil be hurt like this ( not just the hoarder ) and the risk of loosing all is to big .

this might be a bit unethical but I'd be very curious to see what would happen if you gave a hoarder a new house every time they filled one (each time telling them "this is the last house we'll give you!", 1) how many houses they would fill in a lifetime 2) if they would realize the stuff is not what they need to attain happiness and eventually stop hoarding 3) at what point would they want to live in a new place away from their things 4) how far apart they would be willing to be from their things. example: a new house next door vs a new house in another state

Most hoarders will fill any space they have to fill. It’s not going to give them any kind of revelations to give them more space. A lot of people don’t like the American show Hoarders, but if any of the hoarders do come to a realization, I think it’s generally that their family loves them and wants them to love themselves by having a well kept space.

The process needs to go slower and allow the hoarder to arrive at the ability to part with their stuff. In the U.S., the assistance is done - at least on the shows - in a fashion for drama, a sense of urgency, and...ratings.

The problem is sometimes the situation hits a crisis and time has run out. There were 4 months where nothing got done, then they were down to 2 weeks left. Sometimes a crisis is the only thing left. The 87 year old lady doesn't have time.

I watch the KZbin channel "A hoarders heart". She is slowly clearing her hoarded house and talking through her feelings and reasons behind her hoarding. She is determined to have a normal house for her two kids. Very insightful.

Most of these people are endangering their neighbours lives. Not just the fire risk but their boilers clearly are not being serviced as nobody can attend to it through that lot.

I don't know if your mom has ever fully healed but from my house and own experience, honestly one day it clicks and it is like any addiction in life it takes going to classes and constantly from morning to night watching and listening to podcasts reading books all about hoarding and decluttering and it can take years to undo decades of hoarding damage. I am at the major phase of things I would not get rid of for ten years all of a sudden have no value to me. I am choosing to get rid of anything I loved too much. Not loved ones, but my things if a hoarders love for that item is too much I have learned from my own ah ha moment,vir holds me back if I keep only the things I love around me I hoard, of I choose to have nice things around me but nothing I am emotionally attached to is better. I personally believe as a serious hoarder at one point a level 4 hoarder and now after two years of heavy healing level 1 and just today woke up and threw away five things I loved for so long. Another thing about hoarders if it can go on trash no matter what it is the better. I am so grateful for documentaries like yours The Diana K white method works best for me as a recovering hoarder. Mari Condo is not good for hoarders because everything sparks joy.

I’m a collector who borderline done hoarding things for a while after a traumatic event after I had surgery on my l knee when I was 17. I’m 18 now and I’m managing to get it under control don’t get me wrong I still thrift I still collect but I’m much more controlled now and measured.

Please wear proper PPE especially a respirator for mould! These places are a breeding ground for Respiratory Tract Infections; disposable coveralls, gloves, shoe covers with proper donning, doffing and disposal procedures could in the worse case save you from a lengthy life threatening situation inside a hospital ICU. The other nasty thing you could get is a case of dermatophytosis caused by fungus entering like Trichophyton rubrum or antifungal resistant Trichophyton Indotinea breeding and spreading all over the body from Tinea Capitis to Pedis and embaressing Tinea Manuum: Think about stinking white head sized mushrooms growing visibly in real time out of pore and sweat glands of your hands! If the fungus breaches your Basel Cells / Melanocyte layer (just below the Epidermis and generates your skin), and works its way into and below your Dermis and Hypodermis layers called a Majocchi's Granuloma, a type of folliculitis (hair follicle infection) - it's basically Russian Roulette; it could latch onto nerves or lymph for example and give all sort of diseases depending on where the "bullet" hits and consequences can be serious as Meningitis and other debilitating CNS issues

Personally the more of these shows I’m watching I feel there really needs to be a very strict law on hoarders , if there’s ever a fire or something they are truly putting other peoples live at risk very it be the first responders or friends , family and neighbours.

i mean, there are to a point. If homes are bad enough and have been reported they will be given a timeline to clean before the home is condemned but enforcing that on every single hoarding situation would be literally impossible. The manpower doesn't exist. Let alone the amount of homes that are like this that absolutely no one has a clue about except the people that live there.

The U.S. shows about hoarders involve people who are in violation of city ordinances like trash, vermin, insects & fire hazard situations, neighbor complaints, family members threatening adult protective or child protective services, etc., and have been given a deadline to clean up or face the consequences including possibly having their property condemned. So they are under a lot of pressure and most all are not psychologically prepared because they have agreed under duress. The U.K. hoarders situations don’t involve the authorities, deadlines, etc., because they are doing this voluntarily with no pressure. I enjoy both US and U.K. shows but they are different.

But here it seems like its all about SHAMING the hoarders, instead of treating them with some compassion in that it's severe mental health issues that cause the behavior, i think the British approach is much, much better

Moving to a smaller place rather than a larger one can be helpful to some people who struggle with a hoarding disorder. An avid "collector" of various categories of things myself, I have made some progress in that way. Being in place without room for one's stuff can cause a hoarder to "hit bottom" faster than they might have otherwise. (Apartments are also likely to be subject to inspection.) Not every hoarder saves their waste or food which has gone rotten, but these are extreme cases; many of us simply do not have the room for all our things to be used to good purpose, but the solution is not likely to be found in buying up storage units. Best of luck and best wishes to any currently discouraged/overwhelmed owners of too much stuff! A person with hoarding tendencies has to stay vigilant, but anyone can improve. I also have to be okay with the fact that I will never be a minimalist at home. 😐

@@deadmanswife3625 There was a woman on "Hoarders" who actually preserved her own waste in water-cooler jugs, and her bathroom was literally piled to the ceiling with the things. (It was determined that that woman wasn't okay living by herself.) She had also believed the foul odor in her home had been caused by dust, mildew...certainly not the room filled entirely with human excrement!

I’ve lost a lot of people and a lot things in my life but I’d never allow it to make me become a hoarder or do anything out of the ordinary it’s sad that some people can’t move past trauma or loses in their life and I wish there was people they could have talked to before things got out of hand someone should have been there telling them not to give up and to stay strong and showed them that things will get better and they will be okay loving them not hurting them anymore then they already are
