That had to be backed up for quite some time to form a bacteria cake like that. Generally I like all things American but those junction boxes sure do make accessing the sewers a lot easier. Here we are lucky if a house even has a clean out of any kind.

looks like a plug for the pipe, thinking that other manhole was a water catch basin that drained into the sewer line or was an older system that was replaced?

It's a non return valve. In the event of flooding it is supposed to stop flood water entering into the house.

Why do British properties have SO MANY manholes??? I've lived all over the US and the only manhole is in the street where the house main line connects to the city sewer. Never seen a manhole in a back or front yard or garage. Based on your videos, every property in the country has like 4-8 manholes mostly in the middle of the yard! Your videos are hauntingly mesmerizing by the way :)

I'm honestly kind of baffled by that non-return valve. It's only there for the adjacent manhole; the house would still have backflow issues. What is that adjacent manhole even servicing, as that seems to go farther out into the backyard.

They should flush more water and rinse through the manhole once a month. Vipes are often used by women. To safe costs for heating and plumbers, chasing them away wouldn't be that bad. 😂 Luckily our drains in Germany are totally different. We never had any problems in over 30 years. 🤞 Changing the toilet to a japanese model will save a lot of vipes and offers comfort and cleanliness. Next live and next house. 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Non Return Valve. Lets flow out but when levels rise in the chamber it holds shut to prevent backflow up the pipe.

Guys, I’ve heard you give customers advice about not using the dreaded wipes; don’t put kitchen fat down the sink, don’t dispose of paint in your drains, etc. but do you ever feel inclined to give some dietary advice? Eat more fibre and green leafy veg for example, or “maybe cut back on the processed food”. What the **** have people been eating for their drain to get like that😝 Great job though Andy 😀
