From the 1984 album, " One Night in Bangkok", British Murray Head, actor and singer raps the verses, while Swedish singer Anders Glenmark sings the chorus. Taken from the musical, Chess, produced by members of Abba, this was a surprise hit in Europe, making it to Number 12 in the UK and Number 3 in Canada and the US. Great reaction Handsome Harri ❤❤ Thanks Robert, great memory. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦

Murray's kid brother Anthony Stewart Head, who would later play the Watcher Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is playing in the band.

The guys from ABBA did not write this alone. Put some respect on Tim Rice's name! LOL

Harri, the musical itself is about the chess genius Bobby Fischer, who was definitely a personality.

ALW had nothing to do with Chess. It was Bjorn and Benny from Abba and Tim Rice.

Bangkok is an awesome city to visit BTW. Particularly if you have a a bit of cash to go high end for food and lodging. You probably don't want to live there though TBF ;o)

A great memory as a kid in the 80's hearing "The queens we use would not excite you." I laughed so hard at that line. I had no idea it was about chess, I thought it was about those who travel to Bangkok for...certain reasons. And I guess it is about calling out that behavior, but not in comparison to a chess tournament. lol

I once played this for a young Thai lady in Bangkok. She loved it. She had never heard it before

This song actually opens Act 2, in the original treatment album of "Chess," which predated the West End premiere by about two years. The American version bowed two years after that, but only survived two months on Broadway. Act 1 is mostly set in Merano, Italy (the "Tirolean spa" from the first verse), where The Russian, after defeating The American, defects. One year later, he has to defend his title in Bangkok, where The American is trying to sabotage him ("Thank God I'm only watching the game, controlling it.") There's a lot more to the musical, but that should at least get you through this song.

MURRAY HEAD's two biggest hits come from the same album ('Say It Ain't So', 1975): - "Say It Ain't So Joe" - "Never Even Thought" A must listen! The rhythm is not danceable, but melodramatic. The voice is completely different; the melodic line and the lyrics, emotional. Thank you.

For forty years I thought this song was about the dark, seedy, underground of Thailand. But than two years ago I learned that it was actually about chess. Turns out the video isn't a metaphor.

“Chess” is a classic example of a musical that had great music but a not so great story. I think that’s why it doesn’t get a revival. The closest revival was a live performance of the songs, called “Chess in concert” My favorite song is “Pity the child, #2” Adam Pascal singing. such a good song.

And really @tootz1950 even if you weren’t incredibly wrong as this IS the original, your opinion is only that. Doesn’t make it a fact as though what you say and think matters more than that of anyone else. WOW!! 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ You look pretty silly to be honest.
