I like the camera button on my Sony xperia, but it only does open app, shutter, and focus. It makes it feel nice, I can hold slightly down to focus and then full click to take the picture. It is nice to use.

If you go into accessibility settings, you will have there some options related to the camera control button so you can adjust how hard you press for example I still waiting mine to arrive so can’t say exactly where , but I saw a guy talking about that in a video

I tried it in the store. It’s 3D Touch with actual button mechanism, when you’re trying to take a photo it’s most likely that it will bounce back and suddenly collapse down causing unnecessary shakes

We have to give Apple the benefit of the doubt on the Camera Control button. Because when the iPhone X came out the gestures UI was not fully baked, especially when evoking multi-tasking and closing Apps! But they fixed all that with iOS 12! I feel like the same is true with the Camera Control button, the hardware is 1 year ahead of the software. The Camera Control button is made for dual use both in landscape and in portrait mode. I'm pretty sure when more apps start implementing it the usability will go up!

The problem with the new iPhone 16 is that the camera button causes issues when using a phone mount. The mount tends to press the button continuously, which leads to problems such as the camera app opening unintentionally. This is especially inconvenient when you’re in the car, as the phone can activate the camera app without you wanting it to, disrupting normal usage.

Every year since the 11 I’ve gone pro. I upgrade every year. This year I went with 512gb teal iPhone 16 plus and I’m in love with it. Took a little to get use to 60 hz again but I love it!

You dont have to buy iPhone to realize how useless that sliding is on the button. Having a shutter button is great for capturing photos quickly, but as soon as you want to adjust anything, its just way way faster to use a touch screen. Dont expect this button to elevate your user experience onto another level. Treat it as a faster way to capture photos... and thats it. Nothing more

Camera should be on top of the phone when taking photos, if you are using volume up/down (since they work both as a shutter button) camera would be on the bottom of the phone. Its not really best user experience. Especially on larger phones it makes a big difference.

If they released all the feature at once, without testing it, it would be a huge shitshow. The way apple is handling this is what’s best for the long term of apple intelligence. People are just impatient.

Agree. Having used it since launch, it really isn’t as bad as they’re saying. I got used to it after a couple hours and enjoy it. (And that could just be me) Love you guys a lot but I think, in this instance, you need to spend more time using the feature before cementing your final thoughts/opinions. I have a 16 Pro Max and the capture button needs to be much lower than where it is. It’s too high up on the side of the phone and should be moved down about an inch or so, so you can hold the phone in landscape and use your thumbs and index fingers on all four corners. My right hand has to awkwardly come over the bottom of my screen when I try to use the capture button and it makes me not even want to use it. Which is horrible for Apple considering they used the capture button as a feature this year and I’m having nothing but issues with it. How the hell do you mess up a button?

Most of the issues with the camera control yall are talking about can be easily adjusted in the settings and I am SURE that Apple will do their do diligence to make sure everyone on a 15 pro and up will update their phone to 18.1 to get the AI features they paid for. The problem isn’t whether the camera can be customized or whether Apple updates the software and includes more features in the future, but rather that getting a new iPhone just isn’t a mostly effortless, cohesive and complete experience for the user in the same way it used to be, to the point where iPhones feel much less like an Apple product than before and more like something akin to a phone from other smartphone manufacturers. Before, the features shown on the iPhone announcement were usually included and the software was extremely polished, intuitive and perfected to the point where it just worked without needing to “tinker” or change much, but as you mentioned with the camera control and Apple Intelligence aspects, that isn’t the case anymore, and that is without considering many of the weird small bugs and oversights that newer iOS versions have been getting at an unprecedented rate, such as the top bar on the Dynamic Island weirdly shifting off-center at times, which on their own are small inconveniences but that Apple products were known for just not having. I love my iPhone and iOS 18 has been an improvement from previous versions for me, but it is just a little sad to see many aspects of what made iPhones stand out, like reliability, slowly fade away.

Apple is a company that can build some of the most insane things, pretty much anything it puts it mind to, but its obvious that its struggling to figure out what to build in the first place. Edit: The reason why the Capture Control button is higher up than it should be for a shutter is that making it lower would be an even more uncomfortable placement for vertical orientation presses like opening the camera or Visual Intelligence. Edit 2: Both of you have definitely become more pessimistic when it comes to Apple as of recently, but I don't know if I can blame you. They have disappointed more than expected with some of their biggest risks is years (AVP and AI), and it makes sense to be disappointed when the pattern continues with the Capture Control.

Without the AI features we aren’t experiencing the full feature of the CC button. I actually like the button for quickly snapping a picture or video. Literally 2 clicks and you captured a moment that could have gotten away otherwise. (Action button is a shortcut to search whatever text I type in a new chrome tab) I do agree the zoom and all those other controls are atrocious. I think it’s food to remember Apple is making phones for all, most people don’t upgrade every year so coming from the 13 or 14, this is a huge jump. Plus they do this because we keep biting the bait

A retailer in my country (Singapore) is having a tie-up with a bank to offer a crazy trade in deal to push iPhone 16s to consumers. They are willing to take my 2 year old 14 Pro for US$819! That means only paying $180 for a brand new 16 Pro! I pondered on this deal for days but came to the conclusion that Apple is desperate to sell the 16s and the feature upgrades are worth that little. Won't be able to get a sweeter deal in the future but us refusing to upgrade sends a silent signal to Cupertino that they need to do more.
