That big calf reminds me of my calves. I have Brown Swiss calves and they are in the 90 to 120 pound range, plus they are tall. The smallest one so for this year was around 80. They make the beef calves and the holstein calves look tiny. That's a good looking calf!

@susans9617

Our large baby bottle calves were often a bit 'slow' learning/catching on to sucking, feeding etc for a bit. It might be due to difficult birth or size. But once you get past the extra time into them, they thrive and are very profitable. Be sure he gets that colostrum and watch his milk intake for a few... They look great! Saw swollen knees- be sure naval gets dipped.
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 5 жыл бұрын
Yes he was a bit slow 😂 but he’s now catching up. He is still looking good 2 days later. And yes the farmer dipped his naval but I sprayed some on when I got him back home just in case. Thanks!

Great Video again! Simmental Cross? I think it's very good that you buy so many crossings this year. That's definitely worth it. Last year i had a Simmental×Limousin. Bullcalf it weights 155 pounds sadly it dies. The average calf is 100-110pound.
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 5 жыл бұрын
No these two calves were out of an angus bull and the white face was out of a black baldie bull. Both out of Holstein cows. Yes I have found beef crosses to work out so much better. They are easier to keep alive and they are worth almost double in the end! It’s even better this year because calves are $100 cheaper than last year.

just wondering how come in the usa you can buy calves that young and not tagged , are there no traceabilty laws over there . here in ireland you have to have to tag the calves in both ears , and reg them with the dept of ag plus you cant sell a have till its 2 weeks old . when selling them from farm to farm you have to get a premit from the dept of ag so they can transfer ownership to the new owner .
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 5 жыл бұрын
In Missouri, (not really sure about the other states) Holstein calves only have to be tagged if they are going out of state. Other bottle calves don’t need to be but Holsteins, no matter what age. But if they stay in Missouri they don’t require any tagging (that I am aware of). And I wish we had the rule where the calf has to be 2 weeks old before being sold but sadly some calves come into the sales barn with their naval still wet! There are a lot of sick bottle calves that get run through the sales barn that is why it is best to stay away from salebarn bottle calves because most of the time it is a risky investment. Have a good one!

We had one, his mom was 1/4 Jersey, 1/4 Holstein, 1/2 Dual Purpose Short horn, pure black and the size of a Holstein, the bull was purebred Charlais and he was almost 120 lbs at birth. We said Damn it so often trying to pull him that that became his name. The cow, this was her 7th or 8th calf, had twins there after. Her 2 calves before this one were also Charlais and had been around 100 lbs each. I think she had such a hard time with Damnit that she decided to down size. But even her twin calves were huge and their combined weight out did Damnit. The ones we weighed were 67 and 71 lbs each and by fall were larger than any others even ones as much as 2 months older by the same bull.

Hey just a friendly FYI when you buy bagged colostrum be sure to buy colostrum REPLACER not supplement. I never knew this until my vet told me this. I assume that all of my calves arrive sick and immediately give them a dose of draxxin. Trust me it’s worth the $20. I also immediately give them a dose of enforce3 for respiratory protection and a dose of multimin90. My vet also advised me to ear implant at 2 weeks. They are sooo much more efficient when you implant it’s truly unreal! My death loss with this program is less than 1%. Just food for thought.

depending on the bottle size, i never use bottles and every calf will drink what it says on the milk replacer bag or more, first week 2 to 3 Lt 2nd to 4th week 4 to 5 Lt, two times a day, the 6 Lt 2 times a day plus calf starter grain mix medicated to keep them alive.. with out it 30% loss per 100 after all they are born to die, but the more you know the more you save and very healthy

@NoctiDraws
@NoctiDraws 5 жыл бұрын
westpur Quite the opposite. He may be large and go on to produce large calves, but then the problem is that since the calf is so big, the cow will have calving difficulties. Sure, you could breed him to a big-hipped cow, but he could wind up indirectly killing the cows or heifers when they go into labour. That would be more costly than breeding your cows to a smaller bull. End product won't be as large, but at least your breeding stock aren't dead.
@hillockfarm8404
@hillockfarm8404 4 жыл бұрын
He is already wider in the back then the older calf he came with. No mater how big the cow, if the calf cannot fit trough the pelvic canal (limited give there due to bones), it is a difficult birth. That will cost you in vet bills and longer time in between breeding if the cow can be bred back at all. You want low birthweight, slender calves that grow well after being born.

if you read that package you mix it with 2 lts of water at 102 F, you only added one Lt. in fact it looks like your one Lt. bottle was only half full, why do you buy the cheap pack, that pack is only 50gmml, buy the 100ml pack, its 50 bucks cnd. i feed 2 feedings of the 100 mg one one day and a second 2 days later.. if i dont know if it got it from mom, think about it mom only has that for 3 to 4 days. why do you waste your time feeding with a bottles, thats a lot of weeks of work, in 37 years i have never used a bottle, learn how by watching my videos
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 5 жыл бұрын
I did follow the directions on the package. And I bought the cheap one because I was positive he had already received colostrum from his mother. This was just backup just in case. And I use bottles because it is the healthiest way to raise calves. They need to have the sucking action and create slobbers to develop their insides properly. Also drinking from the bottle lessens their chance of getting scours. We used to always raise them on the bucket and I will admit we lost a lot more calves that way.
@arnoldromppai5395
@arnoldromppai5395 5 жыл бұрын
well if you mixed it to two lt. of water it wouldn't be thick, it would be like milk replacer, you said in the video the farmer didnt know, plus the 100mg one is far better insurance weather it did or didnt get any from mom.. if you read the pack the 50 mg say it is just a booster... i have to disagree with your clam that bottles are the heath est way, unless you boil every bottle and nipple after every feeding as recommended, passing on sickness is done far to often, and they get tired fast from sucking and dont get there fill, plus the added stress taken from mom and having to suck a fake item, calve that learn right away to drink on there own come a long ways compared to bottle calves in the same time frame, plus you can add the medicated calve starter into there warm milk witch in turn shortens the time frame of them getting the shits (scours) they have all kinds of things to suck on if they want, but that soon passes .. they dont need it. changing them to pail later adds more stress later that is not needed. keep there stress low and you have a far better out come .. even good older vet can tell you,, i have many years of back ground, and we never sell until they are minimum 18 months old and sold to customers to put in there freezers. there is no money is selling feeders pennies on the pond, my loss has been maybe 1 a year with the exception of a USA Bug that got into Canada last year, never in 90 years have a loss like that, i am not going to argue with you, i just want people to know there are far better ways of doing things. and not to get sucked into on the BS on the web
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 5 жыл бұрын
Arnold Romppai well once again, everyone has their own way of doing things. And I have tried buckets and bottles and recently the milk bar. And yes people shouldn’t just watch a video and think it is the only way. But once again, according to research, bottle feeding is the “healthiest”.

@@FarmandHammer Dude why ia it when aomeone standa uo and apeaks the truth theg are either a hater or causing an argument its like people have a deposition to the truth . Cows are removed from their mothers hours after their birth supposedly because it is to lessen both the cow and the calfs stress but it doea totally the opposite I have aeen cows crying for days after their calves have been taken .I am well aware that you are not the only offender and this happens throughout the world in the dairy industry and it doesn't make it any easier to watch a distressed mother crying for her baby . Sometimes the truth is confronting and ahocking and people just dont want to hear it and shelter themelvea and i believe people need to understand what these cows and their calves go through and maybe humans will appreciate what these animas do for them inatead of taking them for granted .
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 5 жыл бұрын
First of all, let me say this. I don’t delete comments or disable them because I think it is important for everyone to be able to speak there mind. Second of all, I’m glad this conversation hasn’t turned hostile and hopefully it can turn into a discussion among other viewers as well instead of an argument. Yes I do realize calves in the dairy industry are taken from their mothers very quickly after being born. And yes it is not “ideal” to not allow cows to express their natural mothering instincts. But, the dairy industry is something man has created. Cows were never meant to produce as much milk as they do naturally and if the cows do not get totally milked now they end up having many issues with their udders. Their calf would not be able to suck them dry daily. And if the whole world quit drinking milk and using dairy products then we would have no use for dairy cows at all. But I don’t see that happening anytime soon so we just have to make due with what we have available now. And no I don’t agree with mistreating animals, and I don’t think many other farmers do either, we just try to do the best we can with what we have. And at least giving these baby calves the best life possible even if that means without their mother is the best we can do.
@FarmandHammer
@FarmandHammer 5 жыл бұрын
I also think most people watching these videos know about the dairy industry and how these calves are sold, so this might be the wrong crowd to try to inform but I could be wrong.
