Italians in the r/soccer thread agreed with him and said than when abroad they don't eat italian, so... Also, most "japanese" places in Italy are all-you-can-eat cheap japanese-chinese fusion adjusted for local taste, so Suzuki is kinda right. Here's the thing: I'm from Italy and i am fortunate enogh to live pretty near Parma, we don't trust most sushi restaurants either and it's not because of the freshness of sea food available as it's not hard to come by in this region. The distrust many have towards sushi is rooted in tradition, we have the best food in the world and ushi as well as other foods foreign to the region like kebab, mcdonalds, calabresi, etc are just not as good. They offer decent enough food for a medium to low price, there's never going to be a lack of fresh ingredients, not in italy, that's not an issue here, our laws are strict and (here in the north at least) enforced. On the other hand, i have had the pleasure of knowing some of the people that work/own SOME of these restaurants and I've had the displeasure of knowing where SOME of these restaurants grow their own "food" and it is pretty gross, as much as i would love for everything around here to be perfect and clean and safe and whatever, having seen how SOME of these restaurants operate, at the very least a shadow of a doubt relating to where and how they get their food will unfortunately be present.

Lol I know it’s only tangential to the topic of this video, but most of the seafood we eat in the US is imported. Whether ur on the east coast or in the Rockies, most of our seafood is coming from abroad. Norway, Patagonia, Alaska (obvi not abroad but far away), etc. It’s a very odd thing and certainly symptomatic of our unsustainable and convoluted food systems, but that’s a whole other conversation not really suited to this comments section. I just think it’s funny that most of the seafood I eat living in Mass is just as fresh (or not so fresh) as the seafood I ate when I lived in the Midwest
