I gave birth twice under self hypnosis. Pretty amazing what we're capable of. I understood pain was present and understood the reason for it, but did not feel the agony associated with the the birth. It presented itself as a temporary stressor I had to breathe through. I talked calm through it all...with pauses for focus through more severe contractions.

Yes. Fainting can be an uncomfortable but fascinating experience. I think that I have had some very vague memories while I was unconscious due to fainting. I kind of felt like I was on some battlefield, in the trenches. I heard shouts and bangs. Then I slowly returned to the ‘real’ world.
@pbs36
@pbs36 2 жыл бұрын
Have you died before to know it's like fainting? Fainting is a survival mechanism triggered by the brain to protect itself so that all resources go to the brain, namely the blood that otherwise goes to the muscles and the oxygen is spent there. I would imagine that like many other things that go on in your body, death is not manifested in a single way. For the lucky ones it may be painless, for others the brain may trigger pain to a level consistent with the severity of the situation to trigger action from the conscious part.

Rick was right about general anesthesia, actually; you can check out the Mayo Clinic page on it if you like. Regarding breathing, for instance, there is a qualified anesthetist there to monitor your breathing, but they don't specifically have to do the breathing for you, they just make sure you remain stable. General anaesthesia is where you are rendered more or less (usually more) unconscious and the brain no longer receives pain signals; local is only for a specific part of the body.

I was just checking to see if someone else caught this. Sam was also wrong in another episode where they were talking about hypoallergenic dogs, with Sam arguing that hypoallergenic dogs were only designed so that dogs don't shed as often because people don't want hair on their clothes and furniture and has nothing to do with people's allergies. But of course the reason for less shedding is due to allergies, hence the name lol. It's just funny because Sam says things with such confidence that I have to check again on things that I already know the answer to haha. I'm not picking on him for being wrong. I'm wrong all the time. I like him a lot, but I love Ricky. Some people who only know him vaguely, from his stage persona, etc., think of him as being vulgar and mean, but he couldn't be more of a sweetheart.

So under a general or twighlight the pain sensation doesn't get to the brain, but the body keeps the score...requiring at least somatic repression..it's a sensation, an energetic jolt to move. I'd bet that if longitudinal studies looked at many surrounding issue/joint/cancers, disorders of movement, nightmares, etc., the unconscious knows. A body-oriented practice, like that practiced and taught by Reggie Ray, (practice name escapes me) in which the body is the spiritual point of entry, and thus the object of meditation, could elucidate about such occurrences. . Furthers the seeming mind-body split, as do pain killers. I very much enjoyed the discussion and will check out the show. You're funny in conversation with this comedic genius, Ricky Gervais; that's a compliment. Nice to see this diversity. Dave Chappelle's an interesting, thoughtful and quite humorous fellow....food for thought?!

i must say, i am thoroughly unconvinced by all presentations by hypnosis, and i feel like Sams account of remembering that 76 was the year when he was 9 had much less to do with his induction and suggestibility, and more to do with his decent memory of "the year of '76" and how he was 9 years old at that time. if i were personally given the same test, since i was born in 2000 exactly, i don't even have to think for a second about how old i was, though i do have to know the month in question to determine exactly when i turned 9 in 2009, because i was 8 for about half of the year. these very same suggestions are how people come to believing in Mandela Effects, such as Berenstain being spelled BerenSTEIN, Fruit of the loom having a cornucopia, or the origin of the term, that Nelson Mandela was assassinated a long time ago. i don't think there is much "power" in suggestions beyond stimulating a memory, but even then, i feel that it is incredibly prone to become an altered false memory in which you "remember" something which you truly don't remember, but rather "makes sense" as far as you're concerned, so you jump to the belief.

3 minutes on google: AMERICAN SOCIETY OF ANESTHESIOLOGISTS "Almost all colonoscopies in the United States are performed with patients under a level of sedation or anesthesia that prevents them from feeling anything. Often, patients are asleep for the entire procedure." TEMPLE HEALTH "The level of planned anesthesia determines who will be administering the sedation. For example, light or moderate sedation are usually administered by the gastroenterologist performing the procedure. Deep sedation and general anesthesia are administered by a nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist. Most patients tell me that they want to be totally asleep during the procedure (“Just knock me out, Doc.”) That would mean general anesthesia. But this level has a higher risk for a complication, so when I explain the options, most patients are agreeable to a lower level of anesthesia." UFHEALTH: "The question of sedation is a critical one in the United States, where the number of colonoscopies with anesthesiologist-administered sedation has risen in the last decade even as the federal government and private insurers seek to control costs."

I've had several and first one was pretty painless. All others have been done under twilight because I had had a surgery before them which left me with adhesions. That is worse pain that you can even imagine., I woke up during the procedure a few times each time and they gave me more sedation. Without it it would be impossible for me to go trough it and I'm not that sensitive to pain. It really hurts like hell for some people.
@William1w1
@William1w1 2 жыл бұрын
The sedation they (almost surely) gave you is what made you either not experience or not remember the pain. I had a sigmoidoscopy once, which is the same as a colonoscopy, but they don't go in so far, and they gave me no anesthesia for that. It was probably the most physically uncomfortable experience of my life. The nurse was actually pushing on my abdomen to direct the scope correctly, and I spent the whole time literally biting down on the blanket to prevent from making embarrassingly unmanly noises. I've since had a number of colonoscopies, and though I have fuzzy memories of acting in such a way that I must have been feeling pain, I do not actually recall the pain itself, thanks to the anesthesia. So, yeah, a general anesthesia seems unnecessary, but there definitely is intense pain and discomfort in the absence of anything at all.

@minahana1112 2 жыл бұрын
@@William1w1 Where I live they normally don't sedate you for colonoscopy. I had to go trough huge ordeal just to get somebody to do it with sedation. So my first 3 were done without sedation but I got an anaesthetic shot during the third one which didn't help at all. Then I had one which was supposed to be under sedation - doctor promised me that I'll be totally asleep but I was conscious and in severe pain most of the time. The worst part was that I was just stoned enough that I was literally crying and screaming from pain and begging the doctor to stop. He didn't. After that I was too afraid to have another one for a while but I ended up having two more where the sedation was strong enough that it kept me asleep. I only woke up twice during both procedures from pain, I cried a bit and they gave me more of the sedation and I was back under in no time. But I remember waking up and remember feeling pain. My first colonoscopy was almost pain free but all others were terribly painful while I was awake. I'm about to have another one soon and definitely not without strong sedation. I have severe adhesions in my abdomen that cause the pain. Oh and by the way: here the doctors and nurses encourage you to fart which might seem embarrassing but it can actually relieve at least some discomfort.

@@Hawkeye19821 yes I can see this podcast here with automatic subtitles, too. What I'm saying is that purchased podcasts do not have subtitles at least not original ones since I have asked. I do not know though where they can be watched if you purchase them but I suspect not on KZbin. It's like Making sense podcast that I listen to which also has no subtitle option and many times I find it hard to understand some words.

General anesthesia does not mean you are not breathing. General anesthesia simply means you are given a systemic drug, either via inhalation or IV and are not conscious. You can have a general anesthesia and still be breathing.

Drug-induced muscle paralysis with consequent inability to breathe on one's own is not necessarily a component of a bona fide GA.

Thomas Edison had a diary describing "Mind 1" and "Mind 2". Basically every human has 2 minds having an internal dialog 24 / 7. I can feel they are there but maybe only some percentage of people are like that not 100% of humans. So maybe these are the kind of hypnotizable people. I think that when I am in a flow state of mind like when I'm playing video games or coding I'm just using "mind 2" and is like data is missing and I feel blissfulness. And also weed kinda get me in a similar state of mind :0

There is no such thing as a pain signal actually Sam. There is nociception by somatosensory receptors who then transduct this perception into an electrical impulse to the central nervous system, but this perception does not equal pain per se. Pain is always an output from the brain, never an input from the periphery.

"i don´t mind this pain" of course they don´t mind the pain they do get an anasthesia after all. so either you´re under hypnosis and get anasthesia and don´t mind the pain or you´re not under hypnosis and get anathesia and don´t mind the pain. i find this wholly unremarkable. sam said they might need a lighter anasthesia under hypnosis but how would you know that? maybe they would have needed just the lighter anasthesia without hypnosis too. have there been decently sized studies on that? so far everything i´ve read about this was either wholly unremarkable or were just anecdotes about this one patient in this one case.
